Chapter 1

Author: Set Sail
I was still turning it over in my mind when the man in the lead—slicked-back hair, a suit that fit too well for a department store salary—closed the distance between us in a single stride.

I knew him. Operations Manager Gary Walsh, according to the file.

He jabbed a finger an inch from my nose, spit flying with every word.

"Everybody, look at this piece of trash! He's been picking our jewelry counter clean for months!"

"Somebody help me hold him here—I'm calling the police right now!"

I froze, then looked up at him and let out a cold laugh.

"Manager Walsh, did you leave your brain at home this morning? A necklace falls out of my jacket, and that automatically makes me a thief? This is my loss prevention badge. Can't you read?"

Loss prevention officers were the store's invisible patrol—technically under the security department, tasked with watching quietly, gathering evidence, and stopping people from walking off with the merchandise.

I hadn't expected a store manager, of all people, to stand there in front of a crowd and lie through his teeth.

Walsh clearly hadn't expected some low-level loss prevention officer to talk back to him like that either. His face went red.

The woman beside him—the one with the influencer face, Mona Sutton—leaned into his arm on cue, shoulders trembling as she worked up a few tears.

"Manager Walsh, you have to get justice for us customers. People like this always carry fake IDs and lie without blinking. She didn't just steal from me—when I called her out, she tried to hit me!

"I'm just a girl, I was terrified. What if she's got a weapon on her too?"

The onlookers who'd gathered were already worked up.

An older woman jabbed a finger at me and started in. "Young people these days have no shame. Steal something and still act like the wronged party!"

The few young men who'd been itching to play hero pressed in closer, boxing me in.

"Don't waste your breath on scum like this. Grab her first, talk later!"

I looked at this crowd of well-meaning bystanders, being played like puppets without a clue, and almost laughed at how absurd it was.

Not worth the effort of arguing with them.

I reached straight into my inner pocket, ready to pull out my real credentials—the risk control inspector's badge, signed off by corporate headquarters itself.

My fingers had just brushed the stiff edge of the leather case when Mona's hand, nails painted a garish red, shot out.

Her ankle buckled. She collapsed against me like she had no bones left in her body, both hands clamping down hard on the wrist I'd been reaching into my jacket with.

"She's trying to kill me!"

Mona let out a piercing shriek.

What waited for Mona outside was a storm of spit, thrown the ugliest curses the crowd could muster. She shook all over, eyes gone glassy and unfocused, like a rat caught out in the open street. She reached the police car.I turned and looked at Sharpe, waiting to be loaded into the back."Oh, and Mr. Sharpe, one more thing before you go."Those three overseas accounts you've got stashed away for laundering money got frozen ten minutes ago by international anti-money-laundering authorities."Your wife's two beach houses go into forced auction tomorrow morning."You spent your whole life stealing, and in the end, you didn't even leave yourself enough for a funeral."Hearing that his last lifeline had just been cut, and the reality of his family's ruin crashing down all at once. Sharpe's eyes bulged, bloodshot and wild. His mouth gaped, gasping for air that wouldn't come. He tipped backward, seized twice in a violent spasm, and went completely limp, unconscious. The police car's si

I walked over slowly and crouched down in front of Mona. I reached out one finger and gently tipped up her chin, streaked with snot and tears.I let something soft, almost persuadable, show in my eyes.Mona caught that flicker and took it as a sign I was softening. Wild, desperate hope lit up in her eyes. She started swearing oaths one after another."Ms. Sloane! Just let me go, and I'll be your dog for the rest of my life! Point me at anyone you want, and I'll bite!"Watching her drown in that giddy, premature relief, I let go of her chin.I stood, pulled an individually wrapped antiseptic wipe from my pocket, and, with open disgust on my face, wiped my finger clean one joint at a time in front of her."Sorry. I don't like touching filth. As for that dog act, save it for your cellmates. I hear they've got a real soft spot for pretty little things like you."The gap between hoisting someone up to the edge of hope and then shoving them straight into the pit—that particular cruelt

At the sight of the police walking in, Mona wrenched free of the guard holding her, lunged forward, and threw her arms around Captain Foster's leg."Officer! Thank God you're here!"Arrest that woman in black right now! She's a serial thief, a corporate spy!"She didn't just steal from us—she attacked the deputy general manager here. You have to take her in!"Captain Foster glanced down at Mona clinging to his leg, disgust plain on his face. Then he stepped past the crowd and walked straight up to me.He straightened his cap and gave me a sharp, textbook salute."Inspector Sloane! The financial crimes division responded to your tip. Full team's in position."That one ringing "Inspector Sloane" was the final straw.Walsh, who'd only just come around enough to catch his breath, heard the official police confirmation, rolled his eyes back, and passed out cold again in the puddle he'd made.I gave Captain Foster a small smile and nodded. Then I snapped my fingers and tilted my ch

Along with a sharp, acrid smell, a pale yellow stain spread down Walsh's slacks and onto the floor.Walsh had collapsed into a puddle of his own urine.Across the room, Mona sat crumpled on the floor, one whole side of her face swollen and grotesquely misshapen, her hair a wild tangle. Her nose implant looked knocked crooked, blood trickling from one nostril. She stared, unable to process it, at the man who used to melt at her every whim. She couldn't accept that her carefully engineered laundering scheme had just collapsed completely, and she couldn't stomach being tossed aside like garbage.Mona pointed at Sharpe, shrieking."Derek Sharpe, you dare hit me?!"What are you playing at, acting like some loyal soldier now?"You think I don't know how you're going to play the devoted employee? Your wife bought two beach houses overseas—where do you think that money came from?"I've been the one propping up your fake books down in this basement for years! And now that everything's

"This scrawny woman doesn't have a hair on her chin. There's no way she's Inspector Sloane."The moment Sharpe finished his confident little speech, every executive who'd come rushing in turned to look at me with a mix of doubt and pity.Chapman stood behind the president, mopping frantic beads of cold sweat off his forehead with a handkerchief. He held a grainy photo the corporate office had sent over, wanting to place me against it but not daring to commit.Five-foot-eleven and built like a soldier?I couldn't hold it in any longer."Mr. Sharpe, that thousand-dollar tip you bought off some outsourced janitor at headquarters seems to be working out great for you."As I spoke, I reached up and, without any hurry, pulled open the well-hidden zipper sewn into the inner lining of my windbreaker. From the hidden pocket against my body, I drew out a badge with a dark gold cover, embossed with the corporation's gilded crest.I stood up.There was a crisp, ringing crack.I'd swung t

Only Mona wasn't ready to give up. She had no clue how corporate hierarchy actually worked and assumed this was just another one of my tricks to weasel out.Mona let out a scornful snort."Nice try! Keep it up!"A busted phone and a voice-changer app, some accomplice mumbling into a mic outside the room—you really think we're three-year-olds?"Derek, this is obviously a scam. Get someone to grab her already!"That one stupid sentence out of Mona's mouth was like throwing a thorny lifeline to a drowning man.Sharpe couldn't stomach the idea that he, a deputy general manager worth millions, was about to be brought down by some twenty-something girl dressed like a broke college student. He slammed the table and jabbed a finger at me, cursing."You almost had me fooled with that cheap trick! A voice-changer app, and you thought that would work on me!"Security! Smash that phone of hers!"I looked at him, cold."Mr. Sharpe, seizing and destroying a corporate-issued encrypted comm
