Chapter 1

"I'm starting now."

Tommaso Volpe's voice pierced through the darkness. His tone was icy, as if this were a formal business meeting. I closed my eyes and let his hands roam freely against my skin.

It had been like this for five years now. Each time was no different from the other, like a mechanical clockwork sans emotion.

Moonlight filtered through the blinds onto the Eralian marble floors of the bedroom. Even the air felt suffocating.

"Is this okay?" He asked for consent like this was official business, and I nodded, just like I had on countless nights before. This was our routine, our obligation—a clause clearly outlined in our contract. Tommaso began, and my mind had already drifted elsewhere.

At tonight's family dinner, he sat at the head of the table as always, and I sat beside him like we were the perfect couple. Everyone envied us, for the marriage between the Don of the Volpe family and the daughter of the Gallo family created the most powerful mafia alliance.

However, they didn't know that this marriage had only been a transaction from the very beginning. We signed the five-year contract with mutual consent. Tommaso needed the Gallo family's influence at the docks to solidify his position, and my family needed the Volpe family's protection to expand our territory.

Tommaso's breathing grew heavier, and I simply endured it in silence.

I thought of Marco Damiano. His gentle kisses, his promise to give me the most beautiful love in the world… If he were still alive, we would have children by now.

But Marco was dead. He died on that bloody, violent night five years ago, killed by a rival family's gun. He'd rushed out to protect me from a bullet meant for my heart.

"I'm sorry..." I finally couldn't take it anymore, so I spoke softly. "I can't do this. Can we stop?"

Tommaso immediately stopped and pulled away from me. He uttered, his voice carrying a hint of apologetic guilt, "Mi dispiace."

He got up and walked to the bathroom. The sound of running water followed soon after.

His heart belonged to someone else, too. That someone was his adopted sister, Gelsomina Volpe. She had needed his protection.

And that was how this deal could work… Because when personal feelings from the participating parties were not at play, the transaction could be easily established.

I put on my silk robe and walked to the safe on the wall, pulling out a document I'd prepared long ago. It was our marriage dissolution agreement.

The five-year contract was about to expire. Tommaso had the person he loved, and my heart would always belong to Marco.

We each had our obsessions. This marriage was nothing more than a transaction—a contractual obligation.

The bathroom door opened, and Tommaso emerged wrapped in a towel. I was about to speak when his phone suddenly rang. The ringtone was piercing and was especially jarring in the quiet of the night.

"Tommaso!" Gelsomina's hysterical crying came through the phone. "Save me! I'm at the club. I overdosed!"

Tommaso's expression changed instantly. "Which club are you at? I'm on my way!"

"Rosa di Mezzanotte! Tommaso, I feel terrible. I'm dying!" Gelsomina's crying grew louder.

Tommaso threw on his clothes, fumbling for his car keys.

"Tommaso." I stopped him. "We need to talk. Just give me five minutes.

"Gelsomina needs me!" Gelsomina's cries came through the phone again, and Tommaso cut me off irritably, his eyes filled only with urgency. "Whatever it is, you can decide. You don't need to ask me."

I held the document out in front of him. "Then please sign this."

Tommaso didn't even look at it. He grabbed the pen from the table and scrawled his signature on it. Then, he rushed out of the room, and I listened to his footsteps until they faded down the hallway.

I looked at the careless signature and picked up my phone to call Aldo Ricci, the family lawyer.

"The agreement has been signed and is now in effect. Please handle the relevant procedures immediately." My voice was perfectly calm as I continued, "Also, book me a private jet to New Faye one month from now."

I hung up and walked to the window. The city glowed in vibrant neon colors as the night scenery stretched out below, its lights flickering ever so often.

I thought about what my friend, Elena Esposito, told me last week. She mentioned that there was a scholarship student at Sarton University who looked like Marco, had the same eyes as him, and even had the same smile.

After the contract ended, I wanted to go look for him, even if it meant I had to resort to extreme means to make him mine. Maybe it was crazy. But if I could see that face every day, even hell would feel like heaven.

"Yes, I will." I threw myself into Dante's arms. Tears streamed down my face. After all these years, I felt truly loved and needed again, not because of family interests or contractual obligations, but because of pure love.Dante gently stroked my hair and whispered in my ear, "I'll spend my life loving you and protecting you."Just then, I saw a figure outside the hospital room window. It was Tommaso. He stood there quietly, watching us embrace. His eyes no longer held anger or jealousy, only deep sadness and acceptance. He held a small box in his hands. It must have been Gelsomina's ashes. Our gazes met through the glass, and he nodded at me before turning to leave.I knew this was our final goodbye. From now on, we would never see each other again.…It was five years later, and autumn in New Faye was still beautiful. The park leaves had turned golden. I stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of my office, looking at the distant scenery."Mrs. Lombardi, Mr. Lombardi's ca

"If I'd been the one to shield you from that explosion that day, would you treat me the same way?"Tommaso stood at the hospital room doorway, watching me keep vigil at Dante's bedside. Three days had passed, and I'd barely left this place. I looked up at Tommaso sans emotion."Sì," I answered honestly. "But that would only be gratitude, not love."Tommaso's face grew even paler. "So no matter what I do, you'll never love me?"My voice was calm. "That's right. Tommaso, I was married to you for five years without falling in love with you. It's not going to happen any time soon."Those words cut into him like a knife. He sat down in a chair, suddenly looking much older. He spoke, his voice carrying a hint of deep regret. "I know I neglected you before. I hurt you. But now I know I truly love you."I shook my head. "Too late. Some opportunities don't come twice."Tommaso remained silent for a long time, then suddenly asked, "If Marco were still alive, would you choose him or Dante?

"Let her go!" Tommaso shouted urgently as he burst into the dilapidated barn with a team of men.Dante followed close behind, sweat from their desperate sprint still evident on his face. The criminals instantly froze and turned toward the door."Cazzo!" one of them cursed, then immediately drew a gun.But Tommaso's men were faster, and gunshots rang out instantly. Several criminals fell to the ground, and blood splattered across the rotting floorboards.Upon seeing Tommaso and Dante appear, a surge of complicated emotions washed over me. They'd actually come together to rescue me."Alessia!" Dante rushed toward me and began untying the ropes binding me. Tommaso surveyed the surroundings, searching vigilantly for Gelsomina."Watch out!" I wanted to warn them, but my mouth was sealed with tape. I could only make muffled sounds.Just then, Gelsomina emerged from the shadows. She looked completely insane. Her hair was wild, and flames of hatred burned in her eyes.More terrifying s

"I can't take this anymore." A few days later, I looked at my exhausted reflection in the mirror. I really needed to make a decision. The constant rivalry between the two men had drained me. I hadn't slept well all night.Dante was preparing breakfast in the kitchen. Upon hearing my words, he looked over with concern. "What's wrong, Alessia?""I need to go out for some air." I picked up my handbag. "Neither of you is allowed to follow me."Tommaso emerged from the guest room, his expression still dark. "Where are you going?""It's none of your business," I answered coldly. "I need some time alone.""I'll go with you," Dante immediately said. I shook my head firmly. "No need. I want a few hours by myself."I looked at both of them, my voice becoming stern. "Listen carefully. No one is allowed to follow me. If I find out anyone's tracking me, you'll never see me again."With that, I left the apartment without looking back. The autumn sunlight in New Faye was perfect. As I walke

Dante's voice trembled, his eyes full of fear and anxiety. I immediately stepped forward and hugged him, feeling his body shake slightly."No, I didn't agree to anything." I gently rubbed his back to comfort him. "He's just staying here temporarily."Dante held me tightly, ike a child terrified of losing me."I'm so scared you'll leave me," he whispered in my ear. "I have nothing. How can I compete with him?""You don't need to compete with anyone. I chose you," I said gently. Tommaso stood to the side watching us embrace, his fists clenched. He spat coldly, "Enough. We need to discuss the rules.""What rules?" I continued holding Dante."Since I'm living here, there should be basic boundaries." Tommaso's voice carried suppressed anger.Dante looked up at me, blood still at the corner of his mouth. Then, he said, "Alessia, my wound still hurts. Can you help me treat it?"I immediately grabbed the first-aid kit and carefully cleaned his wound. Dante sat obediently, occasionall

Those words pierced Tommaso's heart like a blade. He looked thunderstruck, his face instantly turning pale, his body trembling."So that's all it is?" His voice carried disbelief. "Five years of marriage—the time we spent together, everything I did for you—all of it means less than a doppelganger?"I watched his anguished expression without a ripple of emotion."Sì," I calmly admitted. "I loved Marco deeply, and the marriage between us was never real to begin with."Tommaso staggered back several steps, seeming to have suffered the greatest blow. Various emotions flashed through his eyes—anger, pain, despair—finally transforming into an inexplicable obsession."If I had plastic surgery to look like him, would you love me then?" The words he spoke surprised even himself.I stared at him in shock, never expecting him to say such a thing. "Tommaso, you've lost your mind.""Sì, I have." He smiled bitterly. "For you, I'd become anyone.""You don't understand." I shook my head. "It's
