Chapter 1

Penulis: Fireworks
The bodies had just been removed when my wife, Stella Covington, finally showed up with her junior, Noah Reid.

"Ugh, this is so gross. I'm going to have nightmares tonight!" Noah screamed, hiding behind Stella.

Stella kicked one of the bodies and looked at me with an annoyed look. "Why haven't you handled the bodies yet? Can't you see your parents are scaring Noah? Apologize to him now!"

I froze for a moment, completely bewildered. "Apologize? For what?"

Before Stella's parents—Phillip Covington and Maria Stone—died, I received a distress call from them, asking me to tell Stella to lead a rescue.

She had enough time for that, but what was she doing instead?

She and Noah were up on the mountain, setting off fireworks, and missed the search window.

I thought her negligence was the result of Noah's influence. But it turned out that she thought the dead bodies were my parents.

Noah grinned, treating the entire situation as a spectacle. "Wade, Stella's parents always lecture you about your ego. You can't even apologize for your parents? Seems like you haven't been listening to them."

Frowning, Stella added, "I was actually planning to get coffins for your parents, but now I see they probably deserved it. They raised such a rude son. Guess it's only fair that they paid for your mistakes."

I shot her a cold look. "Prepare the coffins or don't. I don't care. But don't talk about my parents like that."

With a look of sheer annoyance, Stella ordered her team, "These people aren't worth our time. Just find a stretcher to take the bodies back."

Noah added with a smug look, "Why bother with a stretcher? Didn't we just bring a garbage truck? Just throw the bodies in there. Wade, you won't be mad, right? We're just saving resources for the living."

Watching Phillip's and Maria's bodies being loaded onto a garbage truck, I couldn't help but laugh. "How could I be mad? Your idea's actually perfect."

After Stella and I got married, Phillip and Maria changed completely. They stopped being the caring in-laws and barely pretended anymore.

They forced me to quit my job and stay home, taking on the role of a house husband for Stella.

Every couple of days, they'd show up unannounced to check on me. They'd sit down and order a mountain of food. On top of that, everything had to be organic and fresh.

Once, they saw Stella mopping the floor and tore me apart.

"Stella's the leader of a search and rescue team! She works so hard out there. Why are you letting her do all this?"

I was treated like their personal chef.

Now, Stella had ordered them to be hauled away by a garbage truck. I figured karma did have a way of balancing the books.

Noah handed me a flyer, his gaze filled with mockery. "Since I found out your parents were dead, I've prepared a little gift for you. Keep it. No need to thank me."

The flyer described a funeral service specifically for livestock. Everything was arranged—cremation, an urn, and even a plot at the cemetery.

Except, it was for a dog.

When I didn't take it, Stella yelled at me, "Cemetery plots are rare these days! You'd better thank Noah right now! He's even helping you with the autopsy!"

I laughed so hard that tears started to well up in my eyes. "Thanks, once the autopsy's done, I'll make sure to bury them here."

As I watched Phillip and Maria being driven away in the garbage truck, I found myself genuinely looking forward to seeing Stella's reaction when she found out who was really dead.

I called Mom and Dad to confirm they were safe, then contacted a lawyer to draft a divorce agreement.

Just then, the cops showed up. "We suspect the couple who fell off the cliff yesterday were murdered. Could you tell us what you know?"

It turned out Phillip and Maria hadn't slipped by accident. Someone had swapped their hiking map.

But hearing news from Geraldine, I couldn't help but feel a flicker of anticipation. Her assistant told me that her cases were always handled by a professional legal team. She only reached out to me because she knew about my current situation at the law firm. She wanted to use Sharpe Corp's name to help me build a reputation.Faced with her repeated advances, I couldn't help but want to draw closer, yet I was constantly forced to confront the vast gap between us.Stella's case was progressing much faster than Geraldine's. Soon, the trial date arrived.I appeared in court as the attorney representing my client. I never imagined that Stella and I would face each other as plaintiff and defendant. She looked at me as if she had a million things to say, but all she asked was, "How have you been lately?"I just stared at her coldly without answering. In court, Stella explained the mistakes she had made, which led to the delay in rescuing my client's daughter.I also discovered that

I yelled back at Stella, "I'm cruel? Stella, it was your own coddling of Noah that caused your parents to be burned to nothing but ash! I've tried to warn you more than once."But you acted like it didn't matter because you thought it was my parents and even handed Noah the knife while he desecrated them."All your resentment should be directed at yourself, and you should feel guilty for the rest of your life about your parents, not take it out on me!"Seeing me getting angry, Stella quickly reached out to grab my hand, trying to calm me down."Wade, don't be mad. I was just emotional when I heard you were with another woman. I know it's all my fault. I'm a terrible person. I can't even forgive myself."But… I never truly hurt you, right? We shouldn't have ended up getting divorced. Come back home with me, please."Her last words were almost a plea. But I didn't even glance at her as I got into the car.…Geraldine was already at my house, waiting for me. Mom and Dad spoke hig

I took on the case and decided to visit the search and rescue team to gather information.By chance, I ran into Stella, who was being reprimanded by the new team leader."Stella! How many times have you led the team in the wrong direction on missions? Can you even do this job anymore? If you can't handle it, get out!"Our team has lost so many resources this month because of you, and several victims who could have been saved died because of your mistakes! Think about it!"Stella looked defeated. As she turned, our eyes met."Wade, you finally came to see me. Why haven't you replied to my texts?" she asked.I had already blocked her number, so there was no way I'd see her texts. In just three months, she had lost at least ten pounds. It seemed that her parents' death had hit her quite hard.I proceeded with the routine questioning. "Why have you been making so many mistakes at work lately? Did anything affect your emotions before these tasks? Also, no one in the team knows the t

I had always felt sorry for Stella, who was constantly getting hurt with no one there to take care of her.Ultimately, pressured by Phillip and Maria's constant lectures, I finally handed in my resignation. At the time, a close colleague of mine was furious. He told me it was all part of the Covingtons' scheme to control me.Looking back now, I realized that Stella must have injured herself on purpose just to force me into a compromise.Getting back into the lawyer business wasn't hard for me. But after being away for so long, I had trouble getting cases.I saw it as a chance to sharpen my abilities. I took small steps and focused on the details again. Two months later, I received my first case. It was from an old friend, Geraldine Sharpe."Long time no see, Wade. I didn't know you were back at work. Anyway, I'm entrusting my case to you."I smiled and took the file from her assistant.Geraldine and I had been neighbors in middle school. We spent most of our youth together, al

It turned out Stella knew exactly that Noah's so-called autopsy was nothing but an act of desecration. But she'd believed it was my parents' bodies, so she'd blindly defended him.She thought she would see me begging for forgiveness and crying for her to stop.Little did she know that she would reap what she had sown."Noah! I'm going to kill you! Go to hell!"Stella's heart-wrenching screams echoed through the morgue.Unfortunately, no matter what she did now, it was too late. Phillip and Maria were gone, with not even ashes remaining. After Noah was taken away by the police for questioning, I followed along to give my statement.Noah had always been competitive within the team. He had mixed with several people just to secure his forensic certification.I'd heard the rumors and warned Stella about him, but she believed his innocent facade. And in the end, it cost her parents' lives. When I finished my statement, the police told me that Noah had confessed to everything."Mr.
