Since Tess left, I'd been trying to pick myself up. I'd adored her since college. I still remember the first time I saw her, during a break between classes. I was talking to a professor who had just finished teaching—I'd turned in a paper and he was pleased with my work.

Tess burst into the room and, completely ignoring me, started trying to persuade the professor to give her two extra points so she wouldn't fail his course. She used every argument a student typically tries, and she wasn't giving up. I found her so beautiful and persistent that while watching her talk to the professor and completely ignore me, I ended up raising my voice and telling the professor he could take two points from me and give them to her. The professor thought it was a joke, but seeing my interest in the girl, he decided to help me out.
