It was good to get out a little, to remind myself that I was a grown woman and not just a mother. And Boris reminded me of that quite well! But then I had to do something I had avoided as long as I could, something I would keep avoiding if possible: visit my mother, because she would throw a fit when she found out we were back. And that was all she would know, that we were back. Rubina and I wouldn't share the details. It would already be complicated explaining that we had boyfriends, and we would have to explain that because neither of them gave up accompanying us.

"Come on, sis, we're grown women, well-adjusted, brave, empowered, and we can face Mom," Rubina said, but I felt like a little girl who had broken Mom's favorite china again.

"Can't we keep pretending we're in another country?" I turned to Rubina, who was staring at the white-walled house.
