“Mara! I am leaving with the Carlson’s order,” Toni called out from the back door.

“Wait! You forgot the juice boxes,” Mara, Toni’s younger sister, and her partner in Any Time Eats Diner & Catering, came running with three cases of juice boxes in hand.

“Oh crap,” Toni said, snorting and shaking her head. “I did forget. Thank you.”

“No problem. You have everything else you need for their party? I gotta say I love the idea of a Kindergarten social for the little guys before school starts,” Mara said, looking over the contents of the delivery van to make sure Toni had everything she needed.

“Me too. It gives them a chance to get to know each other first,” Toni replied, allowing her sister to double check her work.

They swapped duties often, but Toni’s favorite would always be the actual cooking. She simply loved the textures, colors, scents, and flavors that went with preparing good, wholesome food. She never met a dish she didn’t like, regardless of ethnic origin or the time an

“Mama, I told you already. I am fine. It’s just a bump on the head,” Noemi poured herself a tall glass of iced sweet tea and sat down at the tiny table in her eat-in kitchen.Every apartment she’d looked at in NYC seemed to be the same size. As in teeny weeny. Still, she loved some of the older homes with their big sandstone brick facades and wrought iron fences. The architecture was so different from back home. Noemi especially loved the ones with the tiny secret gardens out back. She noted several in the neighborhood, and they all called to that special place inside of her that loved to commune with nature.People never expected to feel that way in the city, but it was truly teeming with life. So much energy existed in New York. All of it flowing in and out of the millions of people, animals, and plants. The structures and monuments, heck, even the graffiti, were full of life.It was exciting. Different. New. Interesting. And exactly where she was meant to be. Thoughts of a certai

A few minutes later… Rami parked his car. The four-door, average-looking sedan had all the usual modifications police vehicles received to perform optimally for long periods of time, and then some. He left it in a perfect spot that was damn near impossible to find in the city right on the corner of the shop. D’Angelo’s Bakery was just five streets over from his brownstone. In the opposite direction of his precinct. He was surprised Nana had mentioned it, since usually he’d just stop at Rico Pan Bakery on days, she did not pick up any goods. D’Angelo’s was better, but it was farther too. Still, he knew the drive was worth it. They had the best bread and breakfast pastries he’d ever tasted. A few for the captain, some for the guys and gals, and maybe one or two for himself. Carb heaven guaranteed, and Rami was sure to have a good day. His Lion chuffed happily. Even his inner beast enjoyed the scrumptious little delicacies. Feeling peckish, even after his rather large breakfast, R

A few months later…“Bruno! Did you bring the biscotti?” Nonna asked. The tiny Italian woman was sitting in the brand new motorized silver scooter Bruno had just brought her, complete with hot pink flames painted along the side. His Nonna was a total badass, and Mara loved the woman at first sight. The elderly woman resembled her grandson. Same olive skin and warm eyes, only his turned gold whenever his kitty came out to play, which was often around Mara. Especially since they’d only recently claimed each other.“Yes, Nonna. I brought them,” he replied gently, taking out the pink box of pastry Mara had packed for their visit.“Good. Now, when are you going to bring me some great-grandchildren?” the woman demanded, as was her usual response to anything the two of them said or did.“Nonna, I told you, we’re taking it slow,” he replied nervously.Bruno looked so wonderfully worried every time his grandmother brought up their future kits or cubs. She knew it was all because he did n

Bruno walked behind Mara, watching her unlock the door, and step inside. He’d almost lost her tonight. The realization sat heavily on his shoulders, and he frowned. He should’ve been there with her.If he was good with words, she wouldn’t have kicked him out of her office earlier. He could have explained why he didn’t give her his bite earlier that day. Bruno was a physical man. He was accustomed to using his body to express his wants and desires, but being with Mara was not like anything else he’d ever experienced. She was so beautiful and good. He’d watched her with her sister. Saw how she worked with her staff. Always so reliable, respectful, responsible. She was so good. So very, very good. And he was a monster.Bruno’s strength and size had helped propel him up the ranks of the Pride. But when it came down to it, he got here by using his fists and fangs. He was a natural born brawler. There was nothing soft about him, and Mara deserved soft. She deserved safe.He was not that.

Work was hectic. Getting Manny set up to handle the restaurant with Dom at his side, while Mara worked via Zoom with the head chef at the resort to prepare the rehearsal dinner for that night, and the wedding day meals for the next day, was intense, to say the least. Lucky for her, a certain six and a half foot tall, tatted up, yummylicious pussycat was waiting in her office at lunchtime.“What are you doing here?” She gasped as he handed her a bouquet of Gerber daisies and swooped her off her feet for a heart stopping kiss.“Came to see my girl,” he grumbled, teasing her lips into opening, and delving inside her mouth with his oh-so-talented tongue.Mara’s tummy-flies went berserk. He smelled amazing, filling up her office with his bad boy cologne and fresh out of the shower scent, laced with the fur of his beast. Bruno growled softly, pushing her against the closed door. He kissed her so damn good, making her lightheaded with need.“Missed you,” he whispered, licking a path from
