“She’s turned me down several times. I like the chase, but I’m done trying.”

“Or you’re scared of Dante…”

I smirked. “Trust me, I’m not scared of him. He looked like a toddler throwing a tantrum.”

“You think you don’t look like that?” he asked incredulously.

“Shut the fuck up, asshole.”

He chuckled then brought the cigar to his lips.

“She said she doesn’t mix business with pleasure, and neither does her father. Not sure where this rule comes from, but they seem intent on enforcing it.”

“Something must have gone down in the past.”

“I have no idea what that would be. Dante’s never been married. Scarlett seems too young to have had a relationship with such intense ramifications.”

“What about her mother?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know anything about her.”

“Maybe something happened there.”

“Maybe…”

After a long pause spent in comfortable silence, Russell spoke again. “What do you have going on tomorrow?”

“A trust meeting.”

“Oh, that’s gonna suck.”

“It always sucks.”

“Let me know if you want to drink afterward. Pick up a couple women.”

“We’ll see.”

My driver pulled up to the building so I could get out.

I looked at the historic building, a building that had been in my family for generations, handed down through the ages until the present day. I stepped out, and my driver immediately took off.

The guards opened the front door and allowed me inside. It was the place where the greatest artists of the Renaissance had created their works of art, had even lived there temporarily. We opened it to private events for rich foreigners who wanted to feel like royalty for the night. If royalty were such a thing for Italians, it would run through my veins.

I moved upstairs to the grand room, the ceiling a hundred feet in the air, paintings of my ancestors along the wall. My blood was rich with European aristocracy, from French nobleman and even the royal line in England. I had ties to Greece and Norway as well.

The room was enormous, but somehow my father’s presence filled every corner. He sat at the table that was placed there, a lawyer on either side of him, because he’d never been in my presence one-on-one since that fateful day.

I pulled out the chair and sat across from him.

He immediately opened his folder and started looking through the pages.

“Nice to see you, Father.” I relaxed in the chair, one ankle on the opposite knee, my joined hands in my lap.

He continued to ignore me.

“Your beard’s coming in nicely.”

Once he had his papers in order, he straightened and looked at me. “Let’s get this over with, Axel.”

“What a shame,” I said. “I love small talk.”

“We can discuss the upcoming events at all the properties, the harvest at the winery, and the hotels…or we can discuss something else.” He reached into his pocket and withdrew a check.

We’d done this dance before. He made an offer—and I rejected it.

He handed it to his lawyer, who got off his ass and carried it across the table to place in front of me. We were seated far apart because being within ten feet of me was too insufferable for him.

“How’s Mom?” I asked.

He ignored me and stared, waiting for me to look at the check. “We’ve doubled our offer.”

“Wow, I’m impressed,” I said with a slow nod. The check remained in front of me, and I didn’t touch it. “I guess you’ll pay anything to get rid of me.”

“I don’t do business with criminals.”

“Because your hands are so clean…”

“Take the money, Axel.”

I glanced at the check before I looked at him again. “I’m not sure if you would be able to afford this if you were actually paying your taxes.”

His eyes narrowed. “And you pay taxes, Axel?”

“Like you said, I’m a criminal.” I smirked. “But if I don’t pay taxes, and you don’t pay taxes…then you’re also a criminal. Right?” I cocked my head slightly. “That’s how logic works, doesn’t it? That’s what I remember from that hoity-toity philosophy class you forced me to take.”

“Just take the money, Axel. Get out of our lives once and for all.”

The smirk remained on my face, but truth be told, I died every time he spoke to me this way. “You can’t buy me out, Father. I will never relinquish my inheritance, the assets that’ve been handed down through the generations. I’m proud of my ancestry.”

“Well, your ancestors would be ashamed of you.”

“You should brush up on your history because they did some pretty horrible shit.”

“Take the money—”

“No.” I grabbed the check and ripped it into shreds before I sprinkled it across the table. “Sorry to disappoint you, Father.”

The rage in his eyes was indescribable. A trapped inferno burned in his gaze, wanting to break free and incinerate everything it could touch. His temper had no place to go, so he had to bottle it inside, like a shaken bottle of champagne. It was strange to see your own father look at you…and know he hated you. “I’m not your father.” He rose to his feet and took the folder. “And you aren’t my son.”

The gates to Dante’s estate opened, and I drove onto the property. He had an entire corner of the street to himself, allowing him the privacy that was hard to come by this close to the Duomo. I parked the car then approached the courtyard, knowing he would come to meet me at his leisure.

I didn’t look for Scarlett. Wasn’t going to chase her anymore. Truth be told, I never had to chase anybody. I’d never wanted a woman who didn’t want me in return—even if they were married. Her rejection probably heightened my interest, but now I was done.

Heels tapped against the stone, and then Scarlett emerged. She wore skintight jeans on her nice curves and a top that was low cut in the front. She rocked heels like they were flats then dropped into the chair across from me. Her beautiful hair was straight, and her plump lips had a sexy shine.

Okay…maybe I wasn’t totally done.

She crossed her legs and sat with her arms on the table, the curve of her shoulders subtly pushing her tits together and making them more prominent. “Hey.” She tucked her hand under her chin, her red-painted nails contrasting against her fair skin. “How are you?”

My conversation with my father had been over just thirty minutes ago, so I felt like hell. “Never better.” I smirked and made it look natural because I could lie better than I could tell the truth. The last few years had been the roughest of my life, and they had given me skills I never thought I would have. “How about you?”

She gave a shrug. “A lot better than I was this weekend.”

“You look better.” Confident. Sexy.

“I wanted to thank you…for being a gentleman.”

I gave a chuckle. “I’m a lot of things, but a gentleman isn’t one of them.”

“You were to me.”

“It was all ego, sweetheart.” I deflected a fair amount of bullshit with my award-winning smile, but deep down, I had a lot of pride. More pride than most men. That was probably why I’d alienated myself from everyone I’d ever cared about.

Her green eyes studied me, subtly shifting back and forth. “Something on your mind?”

“No.” I hardened my stare, forced the gates to close. “Why?”

“You just…look different. It’s your eyes.”

“I’m tired. Up late last night.”

“Doing what?” she asked, trying to catch me in a lie.

“Drinking.” I grinned. “My favorite pastime.”

She sat back in the chair and crossed her arms over her chest. The umbrella was positioned to put me in the shade, but she was in the full sun—and that seemed intentional. Anytime I saw her, she was always directly in the sun, like the heat didn’t bother her one bit.

I knocked on the door to her dressing room before I opened the door. She was in a tight white dress, a sleeveless gown that hugged her petite frame and put her tits right on display. Her hair was curled and pinned to one side, her makeup light instead of overdone. She gave a small gasp when she saw my reflection in the mirror. “Theo…is everything okay?”I closed the door behind me and approached her, looking her up and down, unable to believe that she would be my wife, because she was so fucking perfect. Not just on the outside…but fucking gorgeous on the inside. Her goodness shone in her eyes like stars in the heavens. “Everything is fine, but I wanted to talk to you.”She turned around to face me directly. “Then, everything is not fine.”“Astrid.” I came closer, making sure not to touch her even though I desperately wanted to… in case this didn’t work. “I just think we should talk about this one last time before we do this.”“Talk about what?” Her eyes shifted back and forth between

“I guess I am a little offended.”“You’re offended that I mentioned the women who meant nothing to me while I respect the woman I love?”“I think it’s kinda cute that Axel brags about Scarlett so much.”“Just because I don’t tell him how I fuck you doesn’t mean I don’t love you, Astrid.”“I know. I don’t think Axel is being disrespectful. He’s just…bragging about how happy he is.”“I show my love for you in other ways,” he said. “I guess I’m just old-fashioned.”“Okay. Would it make you mad if I told Scarlett details?”“No.”“Really?” I asked.“Really.”“Good to know…because I’ve kinda already told her every little thing. Or should I say, every big thing.”He smirked and almost chuckled. “That’s fine.”“It’s not disrespectful to tell her how big your dick is?”“It doesn’t bother me.”“But you don’t want Axel to know—”“I don’t want him to know anything, Astrid. Because you’re mine, only mine, and I don’t want another man having a glimpse of that—even Axel.”I stared at him for a whil

Epilogue IAstridOne Year LaterI looked at the headstones under which my parents were laid to rest, my mother on the bottom, my father on top, and then I placed the two bouquets of flowers in the stone vases. They were close to an oak tree, so there was shade on that beautiful, warm day. There were days when the loss didn’t bother me. And there were others when it brought me to tears.Today, it was somewhere in between.I’d lived with Theo for the past year, and there had been more joy in that one year than I’d known my entire life. Even on my best day with Bolton, it didn’t come close to what we had, the peace that we’d built together.Theo hadn’t asked me to marry him, but I wasn’t in a rush. Whenever he was ready, he would ask.And I would say yes.“I know you both would love him.” They would love him despite his past. Love him despite the blood on his hands. Because he was a reformed man, a man who had walked away from everything for me. “And I think he would love you too.”When

“Fuck, this is nice.” Axel leaned back in his chair, his fingers stitched together behind his head. We sat in the quiet bar, most of the tables empty because it was late on a weeknight.“We drink all the time.”“We haven’t talked in five minutes.”“You’re the talker, asshole.”“But we haven’t talked about Bolton or Beau or whatever bullshit we used to talk about. It’s just fucking chill, man.”Yes, it was chill. I’d resigned a week ago, and Astrid hadn’t seemed to notice I hadn’t gone to work. Maybe she thought I was just on vacation for a short while, even though vacation wasn’t in my vocabulary.“Scarlett has been fucking me soooo good too. Almost dying really gets her going.”“You didn’t almost die.”“Well, I may exaggerate some details to her.” He winked. Now I understood his obsession with his wife, because I had the same obsession for Astrid. I just didn’t share the details because those were just for me. “I left the Skull Kings a week ago.”That grin disappeared when he flinche

Axel was already outside the vehicle when I rounded the corner. He’d been leaning against the truck, his phone in his grip. When he spotted me and the bag, he hustled toward me. “Holy shit, you got it?” He relieved me of the bag and set it on the ground. “Turn on your flashlight.”I pulled out my phone and pointed the light at the bag.He opened it and looked inside.“How will you know it’s him?”“The brand of clothes. His pant size. Stuff like that.” He reached inside and examined one of the boots before he continued to look. Then he pulled out a black watch. He paused to study it like he recognized it. “Yeah, this is him.” He returned the watch and zipped up the bag.“How are you sure? It’s just a black watch.”He put the bag in the back of the truck. “Just trust me.”Axel followed me to Theo’s house after I picked up my car, and we walked in together. He carried the duffel bag at his side then gently placed it on the rug in the foyer. I texted Theo and asked him to meet me downstai

“If I ask for Killian’s bones, they probably won’t even care. Just not sure if I can carry them.”“Well, he’s been dead a while, so…” Axel didn’t elaborate. “I think you can manage it.”“Then let me go in alone. I’ll text you if I can.”Axel nodded before he kissed Scarlett. “See you in a bit, baby.”“Be careful.” She looked at Axel then at me. “Both of you.”Axel parked at the curb and killed the engine. “You sure about this?”I nodded.“Just because he buried Bolton doesn’t make you obligated to do this.”“I know, but I want to. Theo deserves peace.”“You already give him peace, Astrid.”I looked out the window at the sidewalk. “Give me thirty minutes.”He gave a nod.I left the car then approached the club. People were gathered outside, and the music was loud. They had no idea what lay underneath. I moved to the front, and no one stopped me from entering the hallway and going down the stairs to the basement entry. The two bouncers were there, and they recognized me without saying a
