Chapter 2

Autor: Washing Wheat
Chapter 2

"Just taking medication isn't enough," I said, my voice empty of emotion.

"You can also massage her, hold her close when you sleep at night and keep her hands and feet warm."

Yvonne’s face flushed a deep crimson.

"Mary, I didn't mean it like that..."

Tony, however, assumed my well-intentioned advice was just me throwing a tantrum out of spite.

His tone turned icy as he asked, "Are you still throwing a fit? Just because I didn't report my business trip to you?"

Two weeks ago, on his birthday.

I worked frantically, grueling overtime to finish a project just so I could clear my schedule.

I personally cooked a table full of his favorite dishes and picked up a custom-made gift that I had ordered months in advance.

I did it all just to celebrate his birthday.

I waited until midnight but Tony never came home.

I didn't know until I saw Yvonne’s social media post.

Tony had left the country for an overseas medical exchange program.

When I finally reached him, Tony brushed it off completely.

“It’s just a business trip, there was no need to consult you.”

“Birthdays happen every year but opportunities like this project don’t. I thought you’d be able to distinguish between what’s urgent and what’s not.

“Don’t you have your own things to worry about? Why are you always obsessing over my itinerary?”

The accumulated disappointment crashed over me like a tidal wave.

I couldn't stop myself from questioning him.

“Tony, is it true that in your hierarchy of importance, I will always be the least urgent, the least significant and the most expendable one?!”

Compared to my hysteria, Tony remained utterly composed. He said just one thing before hanging up.

“You’re not calm right now. We’ll talk when I get back.”

-

After I had calmed down, I signed the transfer agreement to relocate to a branch office.

My manager hesitated and looked at me with concern.

"Relocating means moving to a completely different city! For something this major, you should really discuss it with your boyfriend.

“You have a partner, you don't have to make such a serious decision."

I signed my name swiftly, without a shred of hesitation. "No need."

The last time I changed jobs. As I was having two job offers, I asked for Tony's opinion.

Tony merely glanced at the job offers.

“This is your life. Why should I choose for you?”

But he patiently guided Yvonne through her college applications.

He helped her get accepted into the country's top medical school so that she could become his junior.

Tony always said I wasn't independent enough, that I was constantly complaining and I was too clingy.

Whenever I excitedly tried to share a funny story with him, he would put on his headphones to listen to medical podcasts.

He kept treating me as if I were invisible.

When I was running late for work, he would refuse to drive me.

He would emphasize that his schedule could not be disrupted for my sake.

If I wanted to join his gatherings with friends, he would tell me I needed to build my own social circle.

For a long time, I genuinely believed Tony was just naturally distant and cold.

And I thought that if I tried hard enough, I would eventually become the exception.

Until Yvonne appeared.

She was the daughter of an old family friend of Tony’s parents.

She was entrusted to his care.

I thought he would see her as a nuisance but he agreed to look after her without a second thought.

I never expected that she would be the actual exception.

Tony replied to every single one of her rants about her roommates.

Whenever she craved a trending dessert on a busy workday, he would drive across the city just to deliver it to her.

During her hospital internship, he proactively introduced her to everyone.

“This is my junior. Please look out for her.”

Every time I fought with Tony over this, he would frown with deep disappointment.

“She’s a kid, are you a kid too?”

“I look after her out of responsibility. Are you seriously throwing a jealous fit over this?”

“How old is she, and how old are you? Why don't you compare yourself to a newborn baby while you're at it?”

But the "kid" he spoke of was only three years younger than me.

All the excuses I had once made for him, that it was just his personality, that he was too busy with work, that he hated clingy people...

Every single one of them shattered into pieces in the face of the patience he showed to another woman.

But that was fine.

My surgery would be over tomorrow and I would leave this city.

Then, Tony and I would have absolutely nothing to do with each other anymore.

My best friend, Gina, found out about my surgery and took a day off just to accompany me.

"Hurry up and clean out the guest bedroom to welcome your gold-medal nanny!" she texted.

I replied with a smile, "The guest room has already been cleaned twice and I bought you brand new bedsheets.

“I guarantee you'll enjoy your stay.”

After he finished his meal, it didn't cross his mind even for a split second to let me know or to ask what I was up to.Back then, I hadn't read too deeply into it and simply kept chatting with him. But later on, Tony gradually stopped replying altogether. Whenever I pressed him for answers, he would say coldly, “Don’t you have your own things to do?”Even though I had passed the age of obsessing over trivial things like whether someone replied within seconds. But seeing Michael’s explanation, a secret, fluttering joy sparked in my heart.Still, I sent back a polite response.“It’s fine, focus on your work first. You don't have to reply to my messages right away.”Instantly, the top of the chat box changed to show that the other party was already typing. After a long pause, a giant wall of text suddenly flashed across the screen.“Soldiers during World War II could still find the time to write love letters to their partners. “Olympic commentators call their girlfriends du

Yvonne asked suddenly. She had appeared at the doorway at some unknown point and walked into the room with a beaming smile."Go find the doctor on duty or your supervising instructor," Tony said, cutting her off. "Don't come looking for me anymore."Yvonne froze, the smile stiffening on her face. She immediately looked toward me as if pleading for help. "Mary, I really can't understand it. Can you please stop making things difficult for Dr. Frank?"I smiled faintly. "We’ve already broken up. Whatever happens between you two has nothing to do with me."A secretive glint flashed through Yvonne's eyes but her tone still carried a faint, tearful tremor. "Please don't fight because of me, okay? Otherwise, I'll feel incredibly guilty..."Tony’s voice cut in, sharp and freezing cold. "It’s the exact same textbook. Why can everyone else understand it while you're the only one who can't?""If you can't even grasp basic concepts like this, it only proves you aren't cut out for t

"The desire to share is the ultimate form of romance. “I want you to be willing to share anything and everything with me, instead of carrying it all in silence. “Every single time my phone alerts me to a message, I want it to be from you."Thundering applause erupted below the stage.Amidst the sea of people, my eyes instantly found Tony. He was leaning against the doorframe, staring absentmindedly at the groom delivering his vows. Then, as if he had sensed something, he turned his head and his gaze locked onto mine from across the room.It was just like the first time we met in high school. At the opening ceremony, he suddenly turned around through the crowd just like this and collided straight into my line of sight. But the heart-fluttering sensation from back then was entirely gone. All that remained now, was a profound tranquility, devoid of any unnecessary emotion.---After the ceremony ended, I went backstage to change my clothes before heading out to eat. How

A wave of intense embarrassment washed over me.Just as I was trying to word a strictly professional explanation.A message to assure him this wasn't some kind of passive-aggressive dig, Michael sent another message.“Dropping a hint?”The very next second, he dropped a bright orange pop-up into the chat.“It was a five-figure money transfer offer!“This isn't a mistake.“Accompany me to a wedding this weekend.“My grand-uncle's granddaughter's cousin is getting married.“My family is probably going to nag me to get married, and it’s a hassle. “You're single, right? Consider this your overtime pay.”Gina’s wedding was also this Saturday...My friendship with Gina was officially facing its greatest crisis in history!I stared at that long string of zeros, an intense battle raging within my soul. In the end, I managed to withstand the temptations of capitalism. Driven by my conscience, my trembling fingers painfully typed out a reply."Thank you, Mr. Vance. But my best

I asked back, my voice completely flat, "Is it really necessary to make a formal discussion over a minor, temporary arrangement like this?"Tony choked on his words. The exact phrase was the one he had used to brush me off countless times in the past.It was now thrown right back in his face.He softened his tone, trying to make amends."There’s a dinner gathering with some friends the day after tomorrow and we’re supposed to bring our partners. “You have always want to meet my friends before, right?""I don't have time."In the past, when I desperately wanted to integrate myself into his social circle, he complained that I was too clingy. He even insisted that he needed his private space. Now that I was leaving, he was suddenly throwing the door wide open.As Tony wasn't expecting such a blunt rejection, he was stunned for a moment."Why are you spending every single day with Gina lately? You and I are the ones in a relationship.""If you want to travel, go shopping or

The onboarding process at my new company didn't go quite as smoothly as expected.First, my name was inexplicably missing from the orientation list. My paperwork got stuck. Immediately after, the director dumped a marginal, dead-end project onto my lap and slapped it with an impossible KPI.A few days later, I finally figured out the landscape of the office. The nominal manager of our department was the group's young heir.He had been parachuted into the position for corporate grooming. Secretly, people called him the "Little Emperor."However, the one who held the actual power was the long-entrenched director, secretly dubbed the "Prince Regent."The two maintained a polite facade on the surface but they were constantly sparring in the shadows. My position was historically under the direct supervision of the Little Emperor. I was forced to take a side without even realizing it.Above all, my approval paperwork got stuck in a neighboring department and the person in cha
