Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat

The moment I opened the door, my words died in my throat.

The brand new bedsheets I had meticulously prepared were crumpled up and tossed carelessly onto the floor.

The guest bedroom was crammed with unfamiliar belongings.

A giant, half-human-sized teddy bear was sprawled across the bed.

It felt like a blatant declaration of ownership.

The sound of the front door opening echoed and it was followed by a soft, delicate laugh.

"Dr. Frank, thank you so much for taking me to check out that restaurant. It was seriously delicious!" Yvonne's voice drifted in.

"All the bad vibes from being isolated by my roommates were completely cured by that dessert!"

Tony caught sight of me and quickly explained with a flat, detached voice, "Yvonne had a falling out with her roommates and can't stay in the dorms anymore.

“She's planning to move out. Since she hasn't found an apartment yet, she'll be staying in the guest room temporarily."

I let out a cold laugh.

"Tony, I told you a week ago that Gina was coming to stay here."

Tony froze.

The look on his face in that fraction of a second told me everything I needed to know.

He had forgotten.

When I told him about it a week ago, his voice was dripping with impatience.

“You should decide on minor things like this yourself. Don't ask me about everything, it's exhausting.”

That was what he said

But now, he pressed his lips together with his voice dropping slightly. "I'm sorry..."

He held up a dessert bag.

With his tone softened as if he was coaxing a child throwing a tantrum.

"The restaurant we went to today seems like the type you'd like. I'll take you there this weekend."

I glanced at the logo on the paper bag.

It was the exact restaurant I had repeatedly begged Tony to take me to in the past.

Back then, his excuse was always that he was too busy with work and he had no time.

I took the paper bag and casually tossed it straight into the trash can.

Tony’s breath was caught in his throat before he could let it out.

Yvonne squeezed her way forward, speaking in her usual soft, delicate voice, "Mary, it's all my fault. I can just squeeze into the bed with your friend. I really don't mind."

I let out a sharp sneer.

Grabbing Yvonne's bedsheets and the giant teddy bear, I threw them straight out into the hallway.

Yvonne gasped, her eyes instantly brimming with tears.

"Mary, those are the things I need to use tonight! What am I supposed to do if you just throw them away?"

I glanced toward the master bedroom and smiled politely.

"You can just squeeze in with Tony. I really don't mind."

Yvonne’s face flushed a deep crimson.

"Mary, if you don't want me here, just say so! Is there any need to humiliate me like this?"

Acting as if she had suffered the ultimate insult, her eyes turned red.

She spun around and ran away in tears.

Tony didn't chase after her. He just stood there, frowning at me.

"Mary, she's always been a bit clumsy and childish. She didn't ruin your things on purpose.

“If you didn't want her to stay here, you could have just said so. I could have booked a hotel room for her.

“There was no need to deliberately hurt her like that."

I let my smile fade completely.

"This is our home. Don't you think you should have consulted me before bringing an outsider here?"

Tony's frown deepened.

He looked at me as if I was throwing an unreasonable fit.

"Yvonne is being isolated by her classmates at school and her mood is incredibly bad.

“I thought you'd have at least a shred of compassion but your very first reaction is to bicker over whether I consulted you or not."

"Besides, she's only staying for two days. Is it really necessary to make a formal discussion out of a minor, temporary arrangement like this?"

"Just like how Gina is coming to stay over these next few days, you didn't have to consult me either."

If this had been the old me, I would have impulsively called a male friend over to stay the night just to see how Tony would react.

But now, I merely nodded in absolute tranquility.

"You're right. There really is no need to consult each other."

Tit for tat.

By that logic, moving out of this city and breaking up with him probably wouldn't require a discussion either.

---

"Go ahead and help Yvonne book that hotel then," I said.

I thoughtfully held the door open for Tony.

Then, I turned around, unzipped my suitcase and started packing my clothes.

But he didn't seem satisfied with my reaction. He reached out and aggressively grabbed my wrist.

"She's an adult, she can book it herself," he snapped.

"More importantly, why are you packing your bags all of a sudden? Where are you going?”

After he finished his meal, it didn't cross his mind even for a split second to let me know or to ask what I was up to.Back then, I hadn't read too deeply into it and simply kept chatting with him. But later on, Tony gradually stopped replying altogether. Whenever I pressed him for answers, he would say coldly, “Don’t you have your own things to do?”Even though I had passed the age of obsessing over trivial things like whether someone replied within seconds. But seeing Michael’s explanation, a secret, fluttering joy sparked in my heart.Still, I sent back a polite response.“It’s fine, focus on your work first. You don't have to reply to my messages right away.”Instantly, the top of the chat box changed to show that the other party was already typing. After a long pause, a giant wall of text suddenly flashed across the screen.“Soldiers during World War II could still find the time to write love letters to their partners. “Olympic commentators call their girlfriends du

Yvonne asked suddenly. She had appeared at the doorway at some unknown point and walked into the room with a beaming smile."Go find the doctor on duty or your supervising instructor," Tony said, cutting her off. "Don't come looking for me anymore."Yvonne froze, the smile stiffening on her face. She immediately looked toward me as if pleading for help. "Mary, I really can't understand it. Can you please stop making things difficult for Dr. Frank?"I smiled faintly. "We’ve already broken up. Whatever happens between you two has nothing to do with me."A secretive glint flashed through Yvonne's eyes but her tone still carried a faint, tearful tremor. "Please don't fight because of me, okay? Otherwise, I'll feel incredibly guilty..."Tony’s voice cut in, sharp and freezing cold. "It’s the exact same textbook. Why can everyone else understand it while you're the only one who can't?""If you can't even grasp basic concepts like this, it only proves you aren't cut out for t

"The desire to share is the ultimate form of romance. “I want you to be willing to share anything and everything with me, instead of carrying it all in silence. “Every single time my phone alerts me to a message, I want it to be from you."Thundering applause erupted below the stage.Amidst the sea of people, my eyes instantly found Tony. He was leaning against the doorframe, staring absentmindedly at the groom delivering his vows. Then, as if he had sensed something, he turned his head and his gaze locked onto mine from across the room.It was just like the first time we met in high school. At the opening ceremony, he suddenly turned around through the crowd just like this and collided straight into my line of sight. But the heart-fluttering sensation from back then was entirely gone. All that remained now, was a profound tranquility, devoid of any unnecessary emotion.---After the ceremony ended, I went backstage to change my clothes before heading out to eat. How

A wave of intense embarrassment washed over me.Just as I was trying to word a strictly professional explanation.A message to assure him this wasn't some kind of passive-aggressive dig, Michael sent another message.“Dropping a hint?”The very next second, he dropped a bright orange pop-up into the chat.“It was a five-figure money transfer offer!“This isn't a mistake.“Accompany me to a wedding this weekend.“My grand-uncle's granddaughter's cousin is getting married.“My family is probably going to nag me to get married, and it’s a hassle. “You're single, right? Consider this your overtime pay.”Gina’s wedding was also this Saturday...My friendship with Gina was officially facing its greatest crisis in history!I stared at that long string of zeros, an intense battle raging within my soul. In the end, I managed to withstand the temptations of capitalism. Driven by my conscience, my trembling fingers painfully typed out a reply."Thank you, Mr. Vance. But my best

I asked back, my voice completely flat, "Is it really necessary to make a formal discussion over a minor, temporary arrangement like this?"Tony choked on his words. The exact phrase was the one he had used to brush me off countless times in the past.It was now thrown right back in his face.He softened his tone, trying to make amends."There’s a dinner gathering with some friends the day after tomorrow and we’re supposed to bring our partners. “You have always want to meet my friends before, right?""I don't have time."In the past, when I desperately wanted to integrate myself into his social circle, he complained that I was too clingy. He even insisted that he needed his private space. Now that I was leaving, he was suddenly throwing the door wide open.As Tony wasn't expecting such a blunt rejection, he was stunned for a moment."Why are you spending every single day with Gina lately? You and I are the ones in a relationship.""If you want to travel, go shopping or

The onboarding process at my new company didn't go quite as smoothly as expected.First, my name was inexplicably missing from the orientation list. My paperwork got stuck. Immediately after, the director dumped a marginal, dead-end project onto my lap and slapped it with an impossible KPI.A few days later, I finally figured out the landscape of the office. The nominal manager of our department was the group's young heir.He had been parachuted into the position for corporate grooming. Secretly, people called him the "Little Emperor."However, the one who held the actual power was the long-entrenched director, secretly dubbed the "Prince Regent."The two maintained a polite facade on the surface but they were constantly sparring in the shadows. My position was historically under the direct supervision of the Little Emperor. I was forced to take a side without even realizing it.Above all, my approval paperwork got stuck in a neighboring department and the person in cha
