/MAYA/

I stood on the driveway, tugging at the collar of the stiff, navy-blue blazer Jax’s people had dropped off at my apartment the night before. The urge to turn around and go back home was nearly as strong as my weariness of Jax

“Why even am I here?” I sighed. I knew beyond doubt that I would stick out like a sore thumb. I lived in the slums all my life, there was no hiding that.

Students were rolling past me in cars I'd only seen in magazines and on TVs. Yeah, I was definitely just walking right into getting picked.

“Whatever, let's just do this,” I sighed as I walked through the gates, ignoring the stares that came from all angles.

For someone who said he was keeping me around to watch me, he sure was anywhere but in sight. I looked at the registration map crumpled in my hand. I needed to find Engineering Block C, sit through my lectures, and go to the hospital to check on mom.

"Hey," a quiet voice said from behind me. "Are you lost too?"

I turned around, my hand instinctively tensing. A girl with large, round glasses and an oversized cardigan was standing there, clutching a massive stack of textbooks to her chest.

"A little," I admitted, lowering my guard a fraction. "Just trying to find the administration hall first."

"I'm heading there now to hand in my scholarship paperwork," she said, offering a small, nervous smile. "I'm Ava. Ava Miles."

"Maya," I replied, walking alongside her as she started down the paved path.

"It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it?" Ava murmured, looking around at the gothic buildings. "Everyone here acts like they own the place, probably because their parents actually do."

I didn't have what to say about all this. I truly was overwhelmed but I also needed to be careful about how I talk on school grounds. I couldn't go slandering the rich when I was in their territory and didn't even know who anyone was.

As we rounded the corner into the main quad, we bumped into a group of girls i could already tell would be bad news. The one in the middle had bright blonde hair, tailored clothes that fit her perfectly, and an expression that suggested she was better than everyone else.

"Well," the blonde said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I didn't know the university started a charity program for the local slums. Did you lose your way to the kitchen, or are you just here to deliver something?"

The girl next to her, a brunette with a heavy layer of lip gloss, giggled on cue. "Look at her shoes, Briar. I don't think I've ever seen those kinda shoes before."

Ava shrank back, her shoulder pressing against mine as she stared at the ground. I'd only heard about bullies like this from TV, guess they were actually true.

"I'm here to register," I said, my voice bored as I stepped forward, putting myself between Ava and the group. "And unless your name is on the door, you're blocking the sidewalk. Move."

The brunette, Lily, gasped. "Do you even know who you're talking to? This is Briar Hilton. Her family basically built the new library."

"Good for them. Maybe she should spend some time inside it learning some manners," I retorted. I glanced at the third girl in their group, a girl with silky black hair and a detached expression who was leaning against a stone pillar, watching us with bored, amber eyes. She didn't say a word, just raised an eyebrow like she was watching an amateur theater production.

Briar’s face flushed red under her makeup. She took a step closer, her perfume hitting me in an unpleasant way. "You think you're tough because you look like you crawled out of a dumpster? People like you don't last a week here. You're an eyesore."

"And you're loud," I said, looking her up and down. "Are we done here? Because some of us actually have to earn our place, not just buy it."

A few nearby students paused, whispering to each other as they watched the exchange. Briar looked around, realizing she was losing her audience. Her jaw tightened, her hands clenching into fists at her sides.

Before she could spit out another insult, the sound of footsteps on the gravel cut through the tension. The crowd of students suddenly parted, shifting away from the main path.

A black car had just pulled up to the curb, and stepping out of the backseat was Jax Worth.

Briar’s entire demeanor changed in an instant. The anger vanished from her face, replaced by a bright smile. She smoothed down her skirt and took two steps toward him. "Jax! Oh my god, I didn't think you'd be on campus so early today. Did you see what—"

Jax didn't even look at her. He walked right past her, his shoulder brushing against Lily, who scrambled out of his way. His eyes landed on me for a while and I could hardly maintain eye contact with him and I nearly thought he'd talk to me or say something stupid but he looked away and continued walking. I wasn't surprised that he didn't acknowledge me but it still annoyed me since he was the reason I was here in the first place. Ugh! What was I saying?

“Let's go,” Briar who was burning with embarrassment said to the other two and stormed off.

Ava let out a breath she’d been holding, clutching her textbooks tighter. "Wow. That was Jax Worth. He's... exactly like the rumors say."

I stared at the closed doors where Jax had disappeared. My anger bubbling over.

“Yeah, a real jerk,” I muttered as I walked off with Ava running after me.

  • Jax's Little Obsession    Chapter 15

Jax’s PovI watched from the shadows of the parking lot as Maya walked toward the car with that other guy—Saige. Seeing them laughing, seeing the way Saige leaned in to listen to her, made something hot and jagged tear through my chest. It wasn't just a simple annoyance. It was an instinctual need to step in and put a stop to it, to make sure everyone understood that she was under my watch, my orbit, my protection. My security team was already in place, but that wasn't enough. I needed to see her. I needed to know she was listening to me, not some basketball player who thought he could win her over with an easy smile. When she finally pulled away from him and walked toward my car, I didn't wait for her to come to me. I stepped out from the darkness of the alleyway, my movements sharp and controlled. I caught her arm, gently but firmly, and pulled her toward the quiet side of the building where no one else could hear us."Why is he spending so much time with you?" I demanded, my voice

  • Jax's Little Obsession    Chapter 14

Maya’s Pov"Just one night, Maya, please?" Ava’s voice was full of hope, her eyes wide as she gripped my sleeve. "It’s just a small gathering at a friend’s place. No drama, no Worth family, no engineering stress. Just music and normal college students. You need this."I hesitated. I had spent so much time looking over my shoulder lately that the idea of a normal night sounded like a dream. But the second I even thought about stepping out without Jax’s approval, a wall of anxiety rose up. I walked into the living room where Jax was sitting, looking cool and detached as he scrolled through a tablet."I’m going to a student party with Ava," I said, my voice firmer than I felt.Jax didn’t even look up at first. "No. It’s too dangerous. You stay here."I felt the familiar heat of anger flare in my chest. I marched over and stood right in front of him. "I am not your daughter, and I am definitely not your property. I am going."He looked up then, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits

  • Jax's Little Obsession    Chapter 13

Maya’s PovJax insisted on me visiting his garage. The garage is not really a garage. It is more like a museum that happens to have engine oil on the floor. Rows of motorcycles line the walls, some of them so old and rare I recognize them only from pictures in magazines my father used to keep stacked in his workshop. My mouth actually falls open before I catch myself and force it shut.“You can stop pretending you are not impressed,” Jax says, watching me with obvious amusement as I walk slowly down the row, my fingers itching to touch every single bike I pass.“I am not pretending anything,” I say, though my voice comes out breathless, betraying me completely. “This is just… a lot of very nice metal.”“A lot of very nice metal,” he repeats, laughing. “You are standing in front of a bike that took two years to restore, and that is the best you can do?”“Fine,” I admit, running my hand carefully along the frame of a vintage racer, its paint gleaming like it was finished yesterday inste

  • Jax's Little Obsession    Chapter 12

Maya’s PovThe large bulletin board in the main hallway is surrounded by a loud crowd of students, all pointing and talking over one another. I push my way through the shoulder-to-shoulder bodies to see what all the fuss is about. Pinned right in the middle of the board is a bright flyer with bold letters: ANNUAL ENGINEERING INNOVATION CHALLENGE.My eyes lock onto the details below. The challenge requires students to design and build a high-performance mechanical system using only a restricted box of scrap materials within a strict forty-eight-hour time limit. The winning team gets a major cash prize, university-wide recognition, and a golden spot on the department’s elite research board.A thrill of pure excitement shoots straight through me. This is my chance. If I win this competition, nobody on this entire campus will ever dare call me a charity case or a fake student again. My talent will speak for itself.“You are actually considering this,” Ava says beside me, reading my expres

  • Jax's Little Obsession    Chapter 11

Maya’s PovBy the second day, I notice people looking at me differently. Not the curious stares from before, but something sharper, something whispered behind hands as I walked past. It does not take long to figure out where it is coming from. Briar. “She is telling everyone Jax bought your spot here,” Ava says, sliding into the seat next to me at lunch, her face tight with worry. “And that is not even the worst part.”“What is the worst part?” I ask, already dreading the answer.Ava hesitates, glancing around before lowering her voice. “She is saying you are sleeping with him. That the whole scholarship thing is just a cover story so it does not look as obvious.”My stomach twists, but I force my face to stay calm. “Let her say what she wants.”“Maya, this is serious,” Ava says. “People believe her. She has been here since freshman year. She knows everyone, and everyone listens to her.”“So what am I supposed to do?” I ask, my voice sharper than I mean it to be. “Chase after every p

  • Jax's Little Obsession    Chapter 10

Maya’s PovThe campus feels louder than I expect, not with noise exactly, but with money. I notice it in the cars parked outside, in the designer bags swinging off shoulders, in the way people walk like they already own every room they enter. I clutch my bag a little tighter and try to remind myself that I belong here just as much as anyone else, even if my clothes are borrowed and my last name means nothing to these people.Everywhere I turn, someone whispers Jax’s name. I hear it from a group of girls near the fountain, from two boys walking past me with their heads bent together, from a professor talking to another professor near the entrance. It seems like there is not a single person here who does not know exactly who he is.“Maya!”I turn and see Ava hurrying toward me, relief written all over her face like she just spotted a life raft in the middle of the ocean. I remember her vaguely from the day of the race, one of the few people who spoke to me like a normal person instead o
