The guys perked up.

“I told you I was working on it,” I said to them cheerfully, then loudly explained our bet—without names.

“Everyone good with this?” I asked. Everyone nodded.

“Agreed, pretty boy?” she ran her fingers through my hair.

“Agreed, little girl,” I kissed her, while the others just waved us off.

“Alright,” Paul said. “Three rounds, three throws per round—total score counts. Couples go one after another, and I’ll keep track.”

Paul’s team went first, then Brian’s, then us, followed by Aaron and Daryl’s team. We stayed neck and neck the whole time.

“Well,” Paul said at the end, “Jay, Jane—you can modify the rules because it’s exactly a tie.”

“Then no one wears weird outfits,” my girlfriend smiled.

“Oh, no-no, Babe,” I interrupted. “Everyone wears them.”

“Are you sure about that, Messyhair?” she asked, looking around. “Vote?” I nodded.

“Alright,” I said. “Who wants to dress their partner?”

Everyone’s hand shot up—except Jenny’s and Susy’s.

“That’s how it is, little girl,” I said, giving her a quick kiss. “Everyone’s dressing up.”

“Then let’s make it three days each, and the couples can decide which days,” my girlfriend suggested. “That way, I won’t have to wear your choices on days when I have interpreting work.”

“That’s reasonable,” I agreed. “Everyone good with that?”

The group nodded.

“Alright, it’s settled,” Jenny said cheerfully, running her fingers through my hair. “I expect three pictures from everyone by the last day of classes, okay?”

I loved how decisive she was.

“Okay,” everyone agreed happily.

After the game, everyone except me went home. Paul disappeared into the bathroom, then into his room.

“Messyhair,” Jenny said when we entered her room, “I have to go home this weekend for a photoshoot.”

“I know,” I said, playing with her hair. “I have my weekend with Uncle Steve right after.”

“Sorry, I tried to reschedule so we’d be home at the same time, but Amber said that week doesn’t work for Alberto.”

“No problem, we’ll spend these two weekends separately. I’ll just study,” I laughed. That was exactly my plan.

“If you don’t mind, I’ll take on a few interpreting jobs while you’re away. But this weekend, I’ll be back early Sunday.”

“Agreed.”

The week flew by, and with Jenny, only lunch breaks and evenings remained. On the days of Uncle Steve’s lectures, we never ate together—I ate with my roommates instead. But on the day he left, we had lunch together.

“Babe,” I said, pushing the topic. We need to talk about this—it’s getting close. “Have you thought about moving in together?”

“You mean you moving in with me at Paul’s flat?” she asked during lunch before leaving.

“Yes, but I’m also interested in your thoughts on us moving in together. You said we should talk about it because you weren’t afraid,” I teased with a smile.

“Did you ask Paul?” she stalled, but I could see her mind working.

“No, we should figure things out first.”

“You—you want to?” she asked hesitantly, looking at me.

“Yes, I do,” I said, taking her hand. “You still don’t trust that I love you?”

“It’s not that,” she said, gently tracing her fingers over mine. “But if you move in, you can’t run away every time something bothers you. You can’t sleep somewhere else just because you’re jealous. There’s no escape route. Right now, you still have the dorm.”

She listed everything out.

“You can’t solve problems just by saying, ‘I’m the man.’ Do you understand what I mean?” she asked.

“I do, Babe,” I said, moving to sit beside her. “You’re afraid.”

“We—we’re happy now, but—but what if—if living together ruins everything?” She was really scared.

“I won’t run away, I promise,” I said, wrapping my arms around her. “Even if we argue, we’ll calm down and talk things through. Let’s try.” I spoke gently.

“I don’t want things to get worse,” she said, looking at me with those eyes I adored.

“Trust me, they won’t,” I said, stroking her cheek. “And you still have some time to get used to the idea.”

“I do trust you,” she finally smiled. “You’re right—let’s try.”

“I’m right?” I teased. “I’m marking this in the calendar.”

“You can have a good day sometimes,” she laughed and kissed me.

That afternoon, she went home, and I took my things back to the dorm before heading to swim practice.

“Not spending the evening with your girlfriend?” Phil asked.

“She left town,” I said. “Don’t you guys have girlfriends?”

“Everyone does,” Dave said. “But none of them are serious.”

“Mine used to change often too,” I grinned.

“Will you introduce her sometime?” Tom asked.

“Definitely.”

On Friday, Jenny drove home after school, pulling into my parents’ driveway just before dinner. The scent of home-cooked food drifted through the open windows, and as she stepped inside, the family was already gathered, waiting with expectant smiles.“Come in,” Brad said, opening the door. “Dinner’s just about ready.”“Good evening,” Jenny greeted everyone and sat across from me at the table—her usual spot. She seemed a little nervous, which was unusual for her lately.“Everything okay, dear?” Dad noticed.“Messyhair said everyone’s coming to visit our apartment tomorrow, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to be there,” she blurted out.“No problem, dear,” Mom reassured her. “Yes, I could only make time now.” So she took resp

I should’ve looked away. Should’ve stood up and left the room. But I couldn’t. She danced like temptation incarnate—teasing, graceful, slow. When she peeled back her sweatshirt and revealed the black corset beneath, I stood.I crossed to her in two strides, hands slipping around her waist.“What do you think you’re doing?” she giggled as I eased her down onto the couch.I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My fingers were already tugging at her tracksuit, breath shallow. I nearly tore the fabric from her—and my own clothes too—blinded by how much I needed her. She laughed softly, her skin warm under my hands, her smile daring me to break every rule we’d set.“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked again, this time breathlessly, already reacting to my kisses.

The week started off calmly. Exams were approaching, but I wasn’t behind on anything.“Hey, Jay,” Dave said before class. “I saw you yesterday.”“Where?” I asked.“I know you’re cheating on your girlfriend,” he whispered.“What?” I tried to figure out what he was talking about.“I saw you at the movies with Miss Wenword, and don’t tell me you’re just friends,” Dave said accusingly. “It was obvious you two were involved—you couldn’t keep your lips off her.”“Well, Dave,” I laughed, “that’s true.”“You just moved in with your girlfriend. That’s not exactly fair to her,” he said reproachfully.&ldqu

“What do you mean?” I asked.“Messyhair,” she murmured, playing with my hair and pressing against me. “I know my taste. You’ll never guess it, and even though our friends have asked, I’ve never shown them what I’d actually accept.” She laughed. “Besides, I’ll just say it’s not the right one.”“But you hate cats,” I whispered against her neck.“Maybe, but winning is what matters,” she laughed as I started tickling her on purpose, making her run into the bedroom.I followed and playfully tackled her onto the bed.“You could tell me about your admirer,” I said.“About what?” she asked.“The exchange student who wants to take you away,” I said. She pushed

“Well, I’d ask Jane,” Paul grinned. “Jay’s usually the one causing trouble in their relationship.”“Seriously?” Aaron was surprised. I smiled and nodded.“I suspect she’s been hiding things from me lately,” I laughed.“You’re not wrong,” Mayoko chuckled.“You could tell me about this study buddy situation,” I said, making Mayoko glance at Brian. I knew my friend was in trouble, but his nod told me he’d handle it.“Nothing special,” Paul said. “There’s a guy who’s been hovering around her since last year and doesn’t take no for an answer.”“Why did she turn him down even when I wasn’t around?” I asked.“He’s a bit pu

I took a look at the ring. It was yellow with a small white stone. I liked it more than most others, but it didn’t compare to Jenny’s.“Don’t expect a date yet,” Brian said. “Mayoko’s parents want a long engagement, and we’ll announce it next week at my future father-in-law’s birthday party.”“You’ll let us know,” Jenny said, unpacking the drinks.“Now it’s your turn,” Mayoko joked, making Jenny busy herself opening cabinets. Brian and I watched quietly.“We’re fine as we are,” she said calmly, returning to the living room a few seconds later with a box of cookies from the first cabinet.“Yeah, that was clear when my friend opened the door today,” Brian laughed, easing Jenny’s embarrassment.“I’ll put a clock in the bedroom,” I chuckled.Brian and I started playing foosball

It was late when I pulled into the driveway next to her little red car. She was locking the front door, wearing a loose sweatshirt and sweatpants, her coat unzipped—clearly heading out. Her hair was pinned up messily.“Hey,” I said behind her.“Uncle Steve’s not home,” she replied without turning a

I wandered around for a while, chatting with Brian, who gave me the rundown on every couple that showed up. Then Daniel arrived. He wore a green shirt and black pants. Paul greeted him warmly. His light blond hair was still cropped short—he hadn’t changed a bit.“Go say hi,” Brian nudged me, then l

I looked over—she had her back to me and hadn’t noticed us. She was with three men and a woman, translating. She wore a modest gray suit but still looked incredible. Her new hairstyle was pinned up, though that one stubborn strand still curled loose at the side. I tried not to stare. I failed.“She

Before I realized it, I’d wandered into Uncle Steve’s neighborhood, to the tree where Jenny and I used to stand. I could see her smile in my mind—only now, she was smiling at someone else.I walked past Uncle Steve’s house. The lights were on, and there was a lot of movement inside. The whole famil
