LOGINThe next day, Dad drove us to the apartment, and I showed them around.
“It’s not huge, but it’s perfect for the two of us. Thank you,” I said once we settled in the living room.
“I see your girlfriend has made it feel like home,” Mom said, looking around.
“Yeah, she’s slowly unpacking everything. Will the rent be covered over the summer too?” I asked, since we hadn’t discussed it yet.
“As far as I know, it was leased for several years. Adam handled the paperwork,” Dad said.
“If no one’s hungry yet,” Dad continued, “we could head to the store.”
“Finally, I get to see my own shop,” Amber said excitedly.
“Sis,” I said, “I’ve already been inside, but they don’t know who I am.”
“Same for me,” she laughed.
We drove into the city center, and the whole family entered the jewelry store.
I wanted to show them the ring I had picked out, but it was no longer in the display case.
“Excuse me,” I said to the saleswoman, “there was a blue-stoned ring here a few weeks ago.”
“Oh, yes,” she smiled. “That one was taken a few weeks ago.”
“Do you know who bought it?” I asked. “It wasn’t a blonde girl, was it?”
“Sorry, I don’t remember.”
“Will there be a similar one soon?”
“I don’t think so,” she said. “This style is more popular.” She pointed to a ring similar to Amber’s.
“Thanks,” I said, disappointed.
“Well, son,” Dad said, “pick another one, then.”
“From this selection?” I asked. “Impossible—none of these would suit her. I’ve checked every store here and back home, and this was the only one that resembled what she wanted.”
“Would you like me to show you something else?” the saleswoman asked.
“No, thank you,” I said and walked out of the store. My parents followed.
“Sorry, bro,” Amber said. “You’ll have to wait. Do you know where my shop is?”
“Of course, come on, I’ll show you,” I said, still feeling down. “But don’t reveal who you are unless necessary.”
The store was open, just like last week.
“Hey,” I said as I walked in, slipping into my previous playful tone. “Your pictures still aren’t up?” I winked. The salesgirl laughed.
“Did the dress fit your friend’s sister?” she asked as Amber and the family started browsing.
“Yes, her friend appreciated it,” I said. “Does your boyfriend buy you clothes too?” Basic questions.
“I don’t have a boyfriend,” she laughed. Dad rolled his eyes slightly but didn’t say anything.
“Hi,” Amber stepped forward. “Is this your store?”
“No,” the girl said seriously. “It’s hers.” She gestured toward Jenny’s picture. “And her partner’s.”
“Are either of them available?” Amber asked.
“No, unfortunately not today. But if you come back on Monday, you can talk to her. Can I help with anything?”
“I’m interested in who designs these clothes,” Amber said. Our parents and Brad stepped aside—this was too much for them. “The kitten?”
“No,” the girl said. “Her partner.”
“Could I speak with them?” Amber asked.
“I can’t give out that information, but I can ask. If you come back Monday, I can give you their number if they agree. Is there a problem with the clothes?”
“No, I just wanted to talk to the designer. Thank you,” Amber said and walked out. Our parents followed.
“Sorry about my sister,” I said to the salesgirl. “She’s pretty critical, but you were very kind—thank you.” I winked, and she smiled.
We left the store, and the others waited patiently.
“Give her a raise for putting up with you guys,” Brad laughed.
“I think you’re underestimating the salesgirl,” Dad said to Amber and me. “I hope Janie isn’t.”
“Jane set it up well,” Amber said. “It looks great. And no, Dad, Jane knows her salesgirl exactly—just like I do,” she said seriously. Dad nodded.
“You can tell her you liked the store. She already knows you were here and is probably expecting you to check it out.”
“Shall we head home to eat?” Mom asked.
“Yes, I’m hungry,” Dad said, driving us back.
The apartment wasn’t locked, and when I stepped inside, I saw Mrs. Julie and Dr. Cox sitting on the couch.
“Hey, Johnny,” Jenny’s mother greeted me warmly and hugged me.
“Uh, good evening,” I said, trying to recover from my surprise. I shook hands with the lawyer. “I didn’t know you’d be here.”
“I invited them so they could see the ring,” Mom said as we moved to the dining table, where we could sit more comfortably.
On Sunday, we had lunch at my place. Luckily, after swimming, we both had a good appetite. In the afternoon, we went to his place to play video games.“When will the pool be finished here? Do you know?” Brian asked.“Jenny said in the fall when we come back,” I said. “Unfortunately, I’ll have to spend a day in the gym.”“I won’t even ask,” he laughed. “She’s definitely going to torture you.”By the time I got home, Jenny had already arrived and was unpacking.“I missed you,” I said, wrapping my arms around her. “How did the meeting go?”“Well,” she said. “They signed the contract.”“What contract?” I asked, curious.
“Yeah, Jenny always sees right through me,” I admitted.“I know, son,” he smiled. “Good luck. I can’t help you—this is between the two of you.” He laughed.“You bet on this too?” Amber asked, sounding exasperated.“She said she’d figure it out,” I muttered, feeling slightly offended. “You don’t think I’m just going to let it go, do you?”“You’re the boss,” Amber rolled her eyes, while our parents laughed.“Is it already sized?” I asked as I held the box. I remembered correctly—it was a stunning ring.“Yes, bro,” Amber smiled. “Dad asked me for one of those bijou rings she wears in photos, so I knew about it—Mom was the only one who didn’t.”
“Unfortunately, it was all for nothing,” I said, disappointed. “It’s no longer in the store, so there’s nothing to show. Does Jenny know you’re here?” I asked.“No,” Dr. Cox replied. “Mickey is at his friend’s place, and Jane left before us.”“I’m sorry about the ring, Jay,” Mrs. Julie said.“Good thing I pay attention to details too—not just Janie,” Dr. Cox laughed, making everyone look at him.“Adam,” Dad chuckled, “I think you should stop teasing them before they kill you tonight.”“Andrew? Adam?” Both mothers asked at the same time.“Ladies,” Dr. Cox said with a smile, reaching into his inner pocket and placing a blue heart-shaped box on the table. &ldquo

On Friday, Jenny drove home after school, pulling into my parents’ driveway just before dinner. The scent of home-cooked food drifted through the open windows, and as she stepped inside, the family was already gathered, waiting with expectant smiles.“Come in,” Brad said, opening the door. “Dinner’s just about ready.”“Good evening,” Jenny greeted everyone and sat across from me at the table—her usual spot. She seemed a little nervous, which was unusual for her lately.“Everything okay, dear?” Dad noticed.“Messyhair said everyone’s coming to visit our apartment tomorrow, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to be there,” she blurted out.“No problem, dear,” Mom reassured her. “Yes, I could only make time now.” So she took resp
I should’ve looked away. Should’ve stood up and left the room. But I couldn’t. She danced like temptation incarnate—teasing, graceful, slow. When she peeled back her sweatshirt and revealed the black corset beneath, I stood.I crossed to her in two strides, hands slipping around her waist.“What do you think you’re doing?” she giggled as I eased her down onto the couch.I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My fingers were already tugging at her tracksuit, breath shallow. I nearly tore the fabric from her—and my own clothes too—blinded by how much I needed her. She laughed softly, her skin warm under my hands, her smile daring me to break every rule we’d set.“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked again, this time breathlessly, already reacting to my kisses.
“Where’ve you been?” Dave asked as I slipped into my afternoon class just in time.“Walking in the park,” I said. “I didn’t know it was that big.“Yeah, it connects all the univer
The next morning, my classes began. I didn’t feel like I was behind in anything. Alongside my regular courses, I signed up for a few language classes—strictly out of curiosity. The first day was easy; in many classes, we were just reviewing.
The night before I left, I packed everything. In the morning, I’d be heading off to a new dorm.I didn’t say long goodbyes—there was no point. I’d only be an hour away by car, though no one besides my family, Paul, and Brian knew
“I have a proposal,” I said. “If, after we’re both back at university, we ever run into each other again—and neither of us is in a relationship—then we go on a date. Just one. If either of us is taken, the deal’s off.”
