Chapter 2

Author: Sixteen Strokes
Bryan couldn’t hold it in any longer, slapping his thigh as he let out a ringing laugh.

“You’re not into jokes? But weren’t you the one laughing the loudest when you were a kid?”

I clenched my fists tight.

All my grievances accumulated over the years poured out in an instance.

Terrified of being cut out back then, I would always offer a silly grin no matter how cruelly they played me for a fool.

When I was eight, they tricked me into climbing the mountain to hunt for a cure-all herb to fix my mother’s cold.

While my back was turned, they slipped down the mountain on the sly, using the pocket money swiped from my bag to buy candy and toys.

By the time the police found me, I had spent an entire night stranded on that peak—freezing, starving, and on the brink of death.

Yet the moment I opened my eyes, my first instinct was to smile at them: “That was fun. But next time… could you please not leave me behind?”

The painful memories flooded back.

Tears spilled down my cheeks, but Bryan and Daisy only laughed harder.

Only Harry showed a flash of impatience. “What’s with all the tears?

“You’ve been unable to take a joke since you were little. We would be having a good time, and you would stand there with a long face as if bullied.”

Just then, my dad, who was supposed to be away on an out-of-town business trip, suddenly pulled up in his car.

“Get in. I’m taking everyone for a drive downtown.”

I pointed at my heavy suitcase. “But I haven’t dropped my stuff off yet.”

He knitted his brows.

“I wasn’t talking to you.

“Can’t fit all three of you in here.”

I froze for a split second.

“Just kidding!”

Dad adjusted his sunglasses. “You’re my daughter—of course I’m taking you with me.

“Leave your luggage with the guard. Hurry and hop in.”

I dragged my heavy suitcase into the security office as fast as I could.

My knee slammed hard against the sharp corner of a desk, but I didn’t even have time to register the pain.

One last time.

I told myself, as long as this wasn’t another prank, as long as my parents were genuinely taking me out this time, I would let go of all my past grievances.

But when I stepped back out, their car was already gone.

Messages from Daisy flashed on my phone:

“Haha, gotcha again!

“Not my idea though. It was Bryan’s.

“He said you have only one brain cell and use it to do whatever you’re told. Can’t believe how true it is!”

Along with the texts was a short video.

In the clip, she had her arms wrapped around my parents, while Bryan had his arm around her, and Harry was carrying everyone’s bags and buying ice cream.

The ice cream parlor was a spot at the top of my bucket list.

“Glad you’re having fun.”

After offering an accommodating reply like I always did, I turned around and walked to the student affairs office.

“Hello. I’d like to withdraw my enrollment, please.”

The staff across the desk looked up in shock, adjusting her glasses.

It was as if she hadn’t heard me properly.

“What did you say?”

I repeated myself, steady and clear: “I’d like to withdraw my enrollment.”

Before stepping into the office, I had opened my mailbox on my phone to accept the full-scholarship offer sent by Crestview University half a month ago.

My parents had said Crestview was too far away—they couldn’t bear to be separated that far from me.

And Bryan and Daisy had convinced me to attend Westbrook University with them both.

I had made my choice based on them.

But now, I couldn’t squeeze into a home made for four.

Neither was there any space for me in a friendship made for three.

Since that was the case, I had no reason left to remain in their lives.

As the surrounding crowd grew larger, I pulled them into a nearby empty classroom. Before I could open my mouth, Bryan’s phone call came ringing through to Harry’s cell.I couldn’t hear what they were talking about. In an instant, Harry’s expression shifted drastically.“What? Daisy forged her depression diagnosis?”That caused my parents’ faces to turn several shades paler. They didn’t dare to cast a single glance in my direction.Harry ended the call and lifted his eyes, looking at me hesitantly.“Bryan said… he located your depression diagnosis at the hospital, but there was none for Daisy.”A scoff escaped me.Subconsciously, I put my hand over the scars on my left wrist.Even though they were concealed beneath the thick watch strap, a dull pain still thrummed in my chest whenever I thought of how I got them.“Violet, I’m sorry.“I failed you as a brother.”His eyes were rimmed with crimson now.And my parents had shed genuine tears.“Violet, come home. Let us take care of you.“If

Ever since learning of my dropout, Mom and Dad had been too sick to leave their bed.A crowd of relatives and acquaintances converged on them with barely concealed ridicule.Openly and discreetly, everyone pointed fingers, blaming them for failing to discipline their daughter.Yet the moment Harry brought home the news that I had secured a full scholarship as an undergraduate at Crestview University, my parents recovered instantaneously.“Yes, yes, that’s our girl!”“Oh, she has always been so self-driven since she was a little girl. We barely had to lift a finger…”Mom and Dad were busy brag-calling relatives from out of town when Harry returned home.Mom craned her neck to look past his shoulder. “Where’s Violet?”Harry bit down hard on his lip, letting out a heavy sigh.“I couldn’t convince her to come back.“She… doesn’t want to see us.”“How is that possible?”Mom slammed the phone down, cutting short the call as panic seized her.“She’s always been a sweet little girl ever since

Harry suddenly lunged forward and grabbed me by the arm.He gripped me with immense force, as if terrified I would vanish into thin air if he let go.“Violet, why did you drop out without saying a single word?”His eyes were rimmed with red, his voice carrying a distinct choke of emotion.I stared back at him with a puzzled expression.“What are you doing here?”Seemingly frightened by the sheer coldness in my eyes, he loosened his grip.“I… I didn’t mean to sound harsh. It’s just… your joke went too far. You scared Mom, Dad, and me half to death.”I scratched my head, tilting my chin slightly.“Did it though?“When you people played jokes on me in the past, none of you cared how I would feel.”Daisy rushed forward, tugging gently on my sleeve, playing the peacemaker as she always had.“Come on, stop being mad at us.“It was just a harmless joke—who knew you’d take it so seriously?”I yanked my arm free, flinging her hand off me.“Let me spell it out once more for you: if I don’t find

After completing my matriculation, I managed to scrape by on my earlier meager savings.I visited every single restaurant in the vicinity before finally finding one willing to take me on.My parents earned tens of millions a year, yet I was dead broke. The pocket money they gave Daisy amounted to nearly a hundred grand a year.No such treatment for me.“You can’t handle money—you’ll be spoilt by it. It’s for your own good we’re giving you little.”So when Daisy and Bryan went skiing in the winter, all I could do was trail behind them as their unpaid photographer. After Harry finished his master’s, Mom and Dad had rewarded him with a brand-new Maybach.Yet when I had wanted a dress costing 500 bucks for my birthday, they had called me greedy for even asking.Just to turn around and get Daisy the exact same dress. It took me far too long to realize the truth. That was why I had spent years being miserable beside my so-called family.“Wow, what an incredible man! Before long, Daisy and Bryan hurried over. They had just finished eating, some dried sauce still sticking to the corners of their mouths.“Harry, don’t panic.“I know Violet. She must think we picked on her yesterday. This is her throwing a fit to get back at us.”Daisy said as she licked the sauce off her lip, flashing a sweet smile at Harry.Bryan knitted his brows, his chiseled face coated in exasperation.“All we did was make her run a couple of extra trips—is it really worth making such a massive scene over? I just checked, and the nerve of her, she actually blocked me.”Daisy nodded rapidly.“She blocked me too.”Perplexed, Harry pulled out his own phone and tentatively dialed my number.Without surprise:“The number you are dialing is currently unavailable…”He let out a scoff. His handsome brow arched upward.“What a brat.“You better hope I don’t track you down, or I’m gonna give you a lesson you’ll never—”His threat ground to a sudden halt the moment he opened an email sent

“What kinda sick joke is this? She clearly completed her enrollment yesterday.”Harry knitted his brows, his tone thoroughly hostile.“You’re just a low-level security guard—what could you possibly know? We wanna talk to the student affairs office!”Dad barked out his order. This arrogant attitude instantly infuriated the elderly guard, who slammed his palm hard against the desk.He pulled up yesterday’s surveillance footage right in front of them.“See for yourselves! She went in there yesterday and requested to withdraw her enrollment—it’s clear as day here.“This university is a premier institution, the dream sanctuary for countless students. We’ve barely had any voluntary withdrawals in a decade. I would be hard-pressed not to remember her.”Mom clutched her chest, clearly shaken to her core by this sudden nightmare of news. The guard shot them a cold glare, huffing out two sharp breaths.“When that young lady came in here to drop off her bags yesterday, she was exceptionally polit
