Chapter 3

Author: Sixteen Strokes
I needed some documents to finalize the paperwork for my admission.

So I took advantage of the time they were out having fun to make a quick trip back home.

It wasn’t far—less than an hour’s flight.

Yet the second I pushed open the front door, confetti burst out all around and over me.

A whole crowd of Bryan’s close buddies materialized before my eyes.

“Surprise!”

Startled, I used my hands to shield my face from the falling flakes.

“Aww, look who’s acting shy now?”

“Bryan arranged this whole thing for you. He spent months on it.”

My chest hitched.

It felt as if a long open wound was suddenly beginning to heal.

A long time ago, I had indeed told Bryan how girls love romantic confessions—complete with colorful confetti and fresh flowers.

He actually remembered.

“Here, Damask roses, your absolute favorite.”

A huge bouquet was thrust into my hands.

I could hardly believe it.

“Is this… really for me?”

The guy standing beside me nodded enthusiastically. “Of course! You know Daisy, Bryan took this dry run far more seriously than next week’s main event.

“For Violet, he only ordered a cheap silver ring online. But for you, he bought a full thousand dollars’ worth of fresh roses.

“Said he was saving the best for you.

“Doesn’t matter you’re just helping him practice his confession. My guy refused to skimp.”

My hands dropped slowly.

My small, pale face was drenched in tears at this point.

In an instant, the room fell silent.

“Vi… Violet?”

Just then, the bedroom door swung open from the inside.

Bryan stepped out dressed in a sharp suit, staring at me in complete stupor.

“What… are you doing here?”

I clenched my fists, unable to hold myself back any longer. I lunged forward and slapped him straight across the face.

“You’d better drop it now! I won’t accept it! I’ll never accept you!”

The door swung open a second time.

Daisy walked in, humming a cheerful tune under her breath.

“So, how was my idea? Pretty brilliant, right?

“Send her an AI-generated video and she’ll never realize we actually came back long ago—”

The moment her eyes landed on me, the wine bottle slipped from her hand.

Dark red wine splashed across the floor like spilled blood.

A few stray drops landed on my cheek.

“Violet… why are you here?”

Forcing down the scalding rage in my chest, I kept my voice as steady as possible:

“Came back to grab a few things.”

Without sparing them another glance, I walked straight into my bedroom as if they were invisible.

Outside, Daisy’s soft sobbing suddenly broke out.

“It’s over… she knows everything now.

“It’s all my fault for insisting on the rehearsal. Now the surprise is ruined—what if she refuses you?”

Bryan offered a low, reassuring murmur:

“It’s fine. She’s had a crush on me for years—this whole thing is unnecessary. One word from me and she’ll come crawling.”

The emotions I had suppressed for an entire day finally exploded.

Clutching the documents, I barged out of the room.

“Enough!

“You were gonna show me your love with a cheap ring, after splurging a grand on flowers for her, and expecting me to say yes?

“I’ve had enough with you! Stop pushing your luck!”

But Bryan cut me off with a look of impatience: “I never realized you care so much about money.

“Can money measure real affection?

“Besides, today was just a joke—why do you always have to make such a fuss out of nothing?”

Daisy nodded in agreement.

She stepped over and grabbed my arm, attempting to soothe me with the familiar intimacy of our childhood.

“Come on, it really was just a joke.

“Bryan was worried he’d be too nervous and mess up, so he asked for my help.

“If there were romance between us, do you really think it would be your turn?”

I lifted my eyes and shoved her hand off me with everything I had.

“Three people are too many for a couple. Count me out.

“And from now on, stop making jokes at my expense. I will take them seriously.”

With that, I tightened my grip on my documents and walked into the bathroom, not turning back once.

Once I packed the last few items for my skincare, every trace of my existence in this house would be wiped clean.

As the surrounding crowd grew larger, I pulled them into a nearby empty classroom. Before I could open my mouth, Bryan’s phone call came ringing through to Harry’s cell.I couldn’t hear what they were talking about. In an instant, Harry’s expression shifted drastically.“What? Daisy forged her depression diagnosis?”That caused my parents’ faces to turn several shades paler. They didn’t dare to cast a single glance in my direction.Harry ended the call and lifted his eyes, looking at me hesitantly.“Bryan said… he located your depression diagnosis at the hospital, but there was none for Daisy.”A scoff escaped me.Subconsciously, I put my hand over the scars on my left wrist.Even though they were concealed beneath the thick watch strap, a dull pain still thrummed in my chest whenever I thought of how I got them.“Violet, I’m sorry.“I failed you as a brother.”His eyes were rimmed with crimson now.And my parents had shed genuine tears.“Violet, come home. Let us take care of you.“If

Ever since learning of my dropout, Mom and Dad had been too sick to leave their bed.A crowd of relatives and acquaintances converged on them with barely concealed ridicule.Openly and discreetly, everyone pointed fingers, blaming them for failing to discipline their daughter.Yet the moment Harry brought home the news that I had secured a full scholarship as an undergraduate at Crestview University, my parents recovered instantaneously.“Yes, yes, that’s our girl!”“Oh, she has always been so self-driven since she was a little girl. We barely had to lift a finger…”Mom and Dad were busy brag-calling relatives from out of town when Harry returned home.Mom craned her neck to look past his shoulder. “Where’s Violet?”Harry bit down hard on his lip, letting out a heavy sigh.“I couldn’t convince her to come back.“She… doesn’t want to see us.”“How is that possible?”Mom slammed the phone down, cutting short the call as panic seized her.“She’s always been a sweet little girl ever since

Harry suddenly lunged forward and grabbed me by the arm.He gripped me with immense force, as if terrified I would vanish into thin air if he let go.“Violet, why did you drop out without saying a single word?”His eyes were rimmed with red, his voice carrying a distinct choke of emotion.I stared back at him with a puzzled expression.“What are you doing here?”Seemingly frightened by the sheer coldness in my eyes, he loosened his grip.“I… I didn’t mean to sound harsh. It’s just… your joke went too far. You scared Mom, Dad, and me half to death.”I scratched my head, tilting my chin slightly.“Did it though?“When you people played jokes on me in the past, none of you cared how I would feel.”Daisy rushed forward, tugging gently on my sleeve, playing the peacemaker as she always had.“Come on, stop being mad at us.“It was just a harmless joke—who knew you’d take it so seriously?”I yanked my arm free, flinging her hand off me.“Let me spell it out once more for you: if I don’t find

After completing my matriculation, I managed to scrape by on my earlier meager savings.I visited every single restaurant in the vicinity before finally finding one willing to take me on.My parents earned tens of millions a year, yet I was dead broke. The pocket money they gave Daisy amounted to nearly a hundred grand a year.No such treatment for me.“You can’t handle money—you’ll be spoilt by it. It’s for your own good we’re giving you little.”So when Daisy and Bryan went skiing in the winter, all I could do was trail behind them as their unpaid photographer. After Harry finished his master’s, Mom and Dad had rewarded him with a brand-new Maybach.Yet when I had wanted a dress costing 500 bucks for my birthday, they had called me greedy for even asking.Just to turn around and get Daisy the exact same dress. It took me far too long to realize the truth. That was why I had spent years being miserable beside my so-called family.“Wow, what an incredible man! Before long, Daisy and Bryan hurried over. They had just finished eating, some dried sauce still sticking to the corners of their mouths.“Harry, don’t panic.“I know Violet. She must think we picked on her yesterday. This is her throwing a fit to get back at us.”Daisy said as she licked the sauce off her lip, flashing a sweet smile at Harry.Bryan knitted his brows, his chiseled face coated in exasperation.“All we did was make her run a couple of extra trips—is it really worth making such a massive scene over? I just checked, and the nerve of her, she actually blocked me.”Daisy nodded rapidly.“She blocked me too.”Perplexed, Harry pulled out his own phone and tentatively dialed my number.Without surprise:“The number you are dialing is currently unavailable…”He let out a scoff. His handsome brow arched upward.“What a brat.“You better hope I don’t track you down, or I’m gonna give you a lesson you’ll never—”His threat ground to a sudden halt the moment he opened an email sent

“What kinda sick joke is this? She clearly completed her enrollment yesterday.”Harry knitted his brows, his tone thoroughly hostile.“You’re just a low-level security guard—what could you possibly know? We wanna talk to the student affairs office!”Dad barked out his order. This arrogant attitude instantly infuriated the elderly guard, who slammed his palm hard against the desk.He pulled up yesterday’s surveillance footage right in front of them.“See for yourselves! She went in there yesterday and requested to withdraw her enrollment—it’s clear as day here.“This university is a premier institution, the dream sanctuary for countless students. We’ve barely had any voluntary withdrawals in a decade. I would be hard-pressed not to remember her.”Mom clutched her chest, clearly shaken to her core by this sudden nightmare of news. The guard shot them a cold glare, huffing out two sharp breaths.“When that young lady came in here to drop off her bags yesterday, she was exceptionally polit
