Chapter 7

Author: Guiding Light
Those words more or less voiced what everyone was feeling. Complaints erupted all around.

In the end, it was only after Gracie broke down crying and said she would find a way to return the money that things finally settled down.

Ten minutes later, we started hiking up the mountain in silence. I watched as Gracie and Matthew gradually fell behind the group. He even seemed to be speaking earnestly, trying to comfort her.

Nothing could beat their deep relationship, it seemed. After scolding her, he still had to coax her.

Whatever. I was planning to quit, anyway. I figured I should just treat this as a live office romance show.

While I was lost in thought, the scenery halfway up the mountain suddenly opened up before us. Ahead was the cable car station. Normally, the cable car would go straight to the summit, saving visitors a lot of effort.

Earlier, I had heard Matthew mention that Gracie had indeed bought the tickets. After all the trouble, she finally did one thing right.

One sarcastic remark after another came out of Gavin's mouth, making me grit my teeth in frustration.Just as I was about to step forward and argue, the office door creaked open. "So you were the one who caused Matty's downfall, you bastard!"Before I could dodge, Gracie rushed in and shoved me aside, pinning Gavin to the ground."You think you deserve to be here? And how dare you insinuate I'm dumb! I'll show you what I can do today so you'll never dare lay a hand on anything that belongs to Matty!"Amid the struggle, Gavin's glasses had already been swatted to the ground. His face suffered a few fresh scratches because he couldn't escape Gracie's wrath in time. The commotion eventually stole the attention of the coworkers outside.I rubbed my aching waist and struggled to stand up, only to witness Gracie hurling the stone sculpture at Gavin's head in the next second. With a dull thud, ruby-red blood trickled down his face, and he passed out immediately. Everyone around gasped

Hearing Gracie, I couldn't help but find it all ironic. After all the twists and turns, our team's project bonus had ended up being used by Gracie to curry favor with Matthew. I shook my head, chuckling mockingly. When Gracie noticed me, she casually picked up the resignation letter from Matthew's desk and waved it lightly. "Well, you're finally giving up your team leader role. I thought you'd keep hogging it forever. Not to brag, but Mr. Pearson is way more capable than you."Seeing the mix of jealousy and resentment on her face, I honestly just felt bored.I smiled and tapped her shoulder. "Once I'm gone, it's your turn as the assistant who knows nothing but making trouble to support your precious Matty!"Without wasting any more words, I briskly walked out of the office. After finishing all the handover tasks, I settled down to focus on growing my livestream business.During this period, Matthew called a few times, humbly asking for advice. He finally learned how to be a proper

As the cable car climbed toward the peak, fresh air filled my lungs. However, the person sitting beside me wasn't Gracie. After that extremely awkward fiasco earlier, Matthew didn't disappoint. He jumped in again, joking that Gracie should give up her seat to him and that he would buy it for 5,200 dollars. Not only did he transfer the money to me, but he also handed out cash to the other coworkers. It was obvious by now that he genuinely treated team outings as a way to build relationships, completely unfazed by the money he was throwing away. Thanks to him, though, the chaotic team outing—smoothed over again and again by his habit of papering things over—actually ended up padding my pocket.I thought we would ride the whole way in silence. Instead, Matthew turned out to be surprisingly eager to learn. He chatted nonstop about my livestream side hustle. He even said he hoped to bring livestream sales into the company someday and have me run it as the supervisor. Honestly, I was t

20 minutes later, my coworkers finished their boxed lunches in silence. My expression remained cold, and I didn't touch mine at all.Beside me, Gavin wiped his mouth and piped up, "So, what do we do next? Sightseeing?""Oh, there's no rush for that. Why don't we let everyone some time to digest their lunch?" Gracie answered. "While we do that, let's go around and talk about how lunch tasted!"Her words got everyone talking. Everyone decided to chime in at once."Tasted like pre-made food. It's ice cold. Gracie, did you really make this yourself?""Yeah. And the seasoning was way too heavy. It tasted really weird.""Now that you mention it, I feel like I'm about to get sick."Amid the complaints, Gracie tossed her already-cold boxed lunch in disgust. Then, she shot me a malicious look. "Ms. Simpson, why aren't you eating? Oh, right—all these ingredients came from the cheap food you sell on your livestream."I stayed up all night ordering them and putting these meals together, so

Gracie's words left everyone half-convinced and half-skeptical. As for me, I made a point of staying alert. Something told me she would definitely stir up trouble again during the outing. Before we left the next day, I deliberately stuffed a few buns into my bag. When I got to the office, I realized they had booked a coach bus, which reeked from who-knew-what.Gracie sat in the front row, still wearing that same white dress from yesterday, shooting me a provocative look. I couldn't be bothered and took the furthest seat in the back. The ride itself was fairly peaceful. I chatted with my coworkers and learned that we would be heading into the mountains. The scenery was supposed to be stunning, and tickets usually cost nearly a thousand dollars per person.Since we were already here, I might as well enjoy the trip.Around lunchtime, the bus rocked to a stop. After getting off, everyone headed toward the buffet restaurant ahead, but Gracie stepped in and blocked our way.She opened
