The officer stepped in and pulled Byron aside, staring at me with a puzzled look.

"What do you mean by that?"

I turned to Lisa and gave her a calm, unreadable smile.

"Why don't you tell him yourself? Are you really Randy's daughter?"

Lisa's eyes filled with panic. Afraid I'd expose her, she hurried over and clung to my arm, speaking to the officer pitifully, "I'm Randy's foster daughter, and Bethany is his biological daughter. We've depended on each other for years."

Byron was furious that I was backing out of the plan last minute, but with the officer there, he couldn't say much. He forced an awkward smile and quickly agreed.
