Chapter 2

Author: Sarah Lane
Early the next morning, I was jolted awake by the noise downstairs. I rushed to the hallway on the second floor and peered down. Elara was kneeling in the living room, her eyes rimmed with red.

“I’ll never get married!”

Magnus, Lysander’s father, cracked his whip against the ground, his voice thundering with rage, “Elara, you’re in no position to make demands of the Thorne, of me.”

Lysander stepped forward, his tone cautious. “Dad, please. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”

Hearing his words, Magnus flew into a fury. He glared at Elara and brought the whip down directly on her. She let out a scream of pain, and just as the second lash was about to fall, Lysander suddenly lunged forward, shielding Elara with his own body.

Elara trembled, her voice thick with anguish. “Brother! Does it hurt? I’m so sorry. This is my entire fault for putting you through it. I won’t get married... unless you are my groom…”

Magnus looked pale with fury, and snapped sharply, “Hold your tongue!” He poked Lysander in the chest, speaking with deadly seriousness, “Lysander! You and Seraphina are perfect match. Are you going to tear it down with your own hands?”

Lysander tilted his head back, meeting my gaze directly. His brow slowly furrowed, a sudden realization dawning on him, “Seraphina, come down.”

Although I didn’t understand why, I instinctively walked over to Lysander’s side. Lysander pressed my hand down, whispered in my ear, “Is it you?”

I didn’t realize what happened until Lysander blamed, “You’re going too far.”

He suspected me of tipping off last night. Otherwise, Magnus wouldn’t rush over early this morning to confront Elara.

I was furious and denied immediately, “It’s not me. I have no idea what you’re talking about…”

But before I could finish my words, Lysander had already turned his head slightly, gagging me with a sudden, gentle kiss.

I froze in place, a hint of confusion flashing in my eyes. This was the first time that Lysander kissed me since they’d started dating. I didn’t know why, but found out the answer soon enough.

Lysander turned to Elara and said in a low voice, “The husband Dad chose for you... isn’t bad at all. Look at me. I’m truly happy now.”

I found his lips curled downward and his gaze resentful, as if he were enduring endless restraint. I finally understood the meaning of his kiss. He just couldn’t have the heart to watch Elara getting hurt because of her stubbornness. A bitterly smirk crossed my face.

As Elara once again collapsed and let out a low sob, Lysander forcibly pulled me into his embrace, deepening the kiss. I struggled desperately to push him away, but it was in vain.

Magnus let out a heavy sigh and left. A farce finally came to an end, and Lysander carried Elara to the hospital. I was left behind alone. Still, that’s fine, peaceful and serene.

Sitting in the living room, I flipped through Elara’s social media again. One of her paintings caught my eyes. It looked exactly like my sister’s work.

In the evening, I was having dinner when Lysander finally returned home. He suddenly grabbed me, a sharp pain spreading all the way up to my wrist.

“What are you doing? Let me go…” I struggled to break free, only to meet his cold glare.

Lysander hurled a accusation at me, “You’ve been constantly being awkward ever since Elara returned home. You’re her sister-in-law. Can’t you just be a little kinder to her?”

I stared straight at him and suddenly laughed. This was the first time Lysander talked a lot to me. I couldn't even keep track of how many words he'd said. Yet he was doing it all for Elara…

Lysander angrily denounced, “Why are you laughing? You have to know Elara is being detained. She’s been pampered since she was a child. How could she endure this hardship!”

I was unusually calm: “Lysander, she is accused of theft!”

Lysander took a deep breath, “So…did you make a confession?”

No one would doubt that I would make any choice other than getting back together with him.Just before hanging up, my mom asked, “Dear, are you okay? Cassian and I got along really well. He also became my first friend in Italy on this trip. A few months later, we worked together to hold an art exhibition. The gallery was packed with visitors, but among the crowd stood the one person I least wanted to see.In the center of the hall, Lysander straightly strode toward me. But, he didn’t put himself on a pedestal, “Sorry, Seraphina.”He murmured in front of me, yet it struck my heart with the force of a thousand pounds.“It’s me…I was wrong.” “It doesn’t matter anymore,” I replied to him indifferently.I turned around, intending to leave. A deafening scream suddenly pierced the air. Elara, her eyes bloodshot and wild, grabbed a sharp dagger and lunged toward me.“Seraphina, you’ve ruined me! ‌I'll haunt you until my last breath!‌”I was completely surrounded, with absolutely no way to dodge that blade. Elara’s face was deathly pale, her expression twisted with madness. Time seemed to freeze. I could clearly hear the sound of my own bre

“Elope?” Lysander couldn’t grasp what she meant immediately. “Yes, we run away!” Elara was so excited that her breathing turned ragged. “Brother, just take me away. Everyone is buzzing with our gossip and we don’t need to take it seriously. No one would trust us anyway. Or, we might as well take this opportunity to make our relationship public.” Elara entreated him desperately, “Brother, we can run away together. As long as I can stay with you, I’m willing to give up everything, including a fortune worth millions. What I really want is to be with you…” Lysander fell silent. His breathing grew heavier and heavier. In a daze, he had indeed pondered over running away with Elara many years ago, but he failed. Yet at this very moment, when Elara brought it up again, what arose in Lysander’s mind was a sudden, instictive resistance for no reason.Lysander, without giving it much thought, blurted out his refusal: “No way.”“Why not?” Elara screamed. “Brother, don’t you love me? Boom! Lysander felt a deafening roar near his ears, instantly drowning out every other sound around him. He stood frozen, his face a mask of cold disbelief. “Dad, this joke isn’t funny. He paused, “I know you don’t want to keep Elara at home any longer. But you don’t have to tell liesaSeraphina is gone.” Magnus remained silent for a moment, then abruptly stood up and walked toward the living room. He pulled open the drawer, took out a document from inside, and placed it heavily on the table.Lysander clenched his hands into fists, the veins on the backs of his hands standing out starkly as if he desperately struggled to suppress and endure something deep inside, “Tell Seraphina to come out.” “Don’t you know it?” Magnus sighed, “I did my best to dissuade her when Seraphina proposed divorce.”Lysander clenched his teeth tightly, and a slight tremor leaked out. Magnus continued, “Seraphina’s parents and I were very optimistic about your marriage, but Seraphina was firm and you’d alrea

Lysander was visibly surprised at Felix’s answer, “She didn’t reach out to you?”Felix shook his head firmly. Lysander paused, his eyes flashing with a look of astonishment. After a brief silence, he spoke coldly, “Got it. Just go home.”Left alone in the office, he finished the remaining half cup of coffee before turning on his phone, which had been powered off all night.Countless missed calls and messages flooded into view. Aside from friends, it was mostly Elara. Magnus, knowing Lysander must be busy handling the emergency, had gone straight to his assistant Felix instead.Lysander went through all the missed calls, but Seraphina’s name was nowhere to be found. It caught him off guard. He had called her before powering off. He was absolutely sure Seraphina would call back as she had always been. But now, when he opened the chat box with Seraphina, the last message remained frozen from dozens of days ago, ending with his single word: “Received.” There was no message, let alone a

The camera panned away from the host back to Lysander. His face was a mask of rigid composure, though a flicker of embarrassment betrayed him. Elara was in a complete panic and grabbed Lysander’s sleeve, “Brother! She must be crazy.”Before she could finish her words, Lysander forced a calm tone and spoke up, “Seraphina, stop joking around.” He stood motionless, leaving his figure tall and slender, as steady as a mountain. But, I perceived the slightest tremor in his voice. He continued, “If everyone takes it seriously…”I didn’t hear him out and directly hung up. Rooted to the spot, Lysander looked momentarily awkward, but he quickly concealed and suppressed his emotions. When countless microphones and cameras swarmed toward him, he remained composed, offering a practiced smile. “Seraphina was just joking. Please bear with her.”Elara’s fiancé suddenly called a halt, and the engagement banquet was abruptly interrupted and brought to an end.As Elara lifted her skirt to step into t
