Chapter 3

Author: Sarah Lane
I shot back, my voice trembling with rage: “‌On what grounds do you think it's me?‌ The fact is she stole the painting from my sister. She deserved to be caught.”

Lysander took a deep breath, forcing his temper down. He did his utmost to remain calm, though his eyes remained cold, “Don’t get excited.”

He pressed his weight down on me. I was completely shackled beneath him, unable to move an inch.

“Let me go!” I screamed.

Lysander held me tighter, his grip like iron. He enunciated every word with chilling clarity, “Seraphina, you just need to go to the police station and admit that you gave her that painting.”

Fury surged through me at his audacious request. Without the slightest hesitation, I sank my teeth into his neck, tearing into his flesh with all my might!

Lysander hissed sharply in pain. Even as blue veins bulged on his neck, he refused to let go. His resolve only hardened, “Seraphina, you absolutely have to go.”

“What if I say no? ‌My sister passed away, but Elara was shameless enough to steal from a dead person.” I glared at him menacingly, “Over my dead body I'll go.”

Lysander twitched his brows and fell into a long, heavy silence. After a while, he exhaled slowly, “Seraphina, don’t push me too far.”

He sighed, his tone both firm and filled with pity. “I know you won’t bring yourself to die. It hasn't been easy for us to get here. ‌How could you even leave me.‌ Stop fussing! Let’s go to the police station, shall we?”

I froze, snapping my head up to look at him in utter disbelief.

He clearly knew...how much I love him. He knew better than anyone else, yet he weaponized my love against me. He was twisting the knife in my heart, leaving me to bleed out while he stood there unscathed. I tried desperately to stay calm.

I closed my eyes and forced a soft, broken smile, “Yes, I'm not going to commit suicide. But, I’m not for you but to leave you and start my life over again.”

Lysander sighed with relief, misunderstanding my words entirely, “Now we can go…”

As he loosened his grip, I seized the chance to kick his groin hard, finally breaking free from his embrace.

I looked straight at him and carefully enunciated: “But I won’t go either.”

Lysander turned pale and trembled slightly. He nearly lost his balance from the intense pain. His anger could no longer be contained, “Seraphina, you’ve gone too far.”

He closed eyes and took a deep breath to suppress his anger. But, it was futile. Lysander clenched his hands tightly into fists, the blue veins standing out on the backs of his hands.

“Lock Seraphina away.” he commanded coldly.

He turned around and strode toward the door, throwing one last order over his shoulder, “Tell me when you’re willing to say yes.”

No one would doubt that I would make any choice other than getting back together with him.Just before hanging up, my mom asked, “Dear, are you okay? Do you need me to come over and keep you company?”I shook my head gently: “It’s okay. Mom. I can handle it.”“Okay,” my mom continued with a smile. “As long as you’re happy, just do whatever you want. I totally supported your decision to divorce Lysander. But if you decide to get back together with him, I will still respect your choice. ”At that moment, it hit me that they all believed I couldn’t live without Lysander.‌ No one cared about the mistakes he made in the past. Lysander had saved my life at the risk of his own life, but did that mean I had to go back to him? I examined my own conscience and asked, “Is this really what I want? Do I still love Lysander?”Two hours later, Lysander’s surgery was completed, and he was smoothly transferred to a regular ward. The doctor said he would regain consciousness within 24 hours. That meant

Cassian and I got along really well. He also became my first friend in Italy on this trip. A few months later, we worked together to hold an art exhibition. The gallery was packed with visitors, but among the crowd stood the one person I least wanted to see.In the center of the hall, Lysander straightly strode toward me. But, he didn’t put himself on a pedestal, “Sorry, Seraphina.”He murmured in front of me, yet it struck my heart with the force of a thousand pounds.“It’s me…I was wrong.” “It doesn’t matter anymore,” I replied to him indifferently.I turned around, intending to leave. A deafening scream suddenly pierced the air. Elara, her eyes bloodshot and wild, grabbed a sharp dagger and lunged toward me.“Seraphina, you’ve ruined me! ‌I'll haunt you until my last breath!‌”I was completely surrounded, with absolutely no way to dodge that blade. Elara’s face was deathly pale, her expression twisted with madness. Time seemed to freeze. I could clearly hear the sound of my own bre

“Elope?” Lysander couldn’t grasp what she meant immediately. “Yes, we run away!” Elara was so excited that her breathing turned ragged. “Brother, just take me away. Everyone is buzzing with our gossip and we don’t need to take it seriously. No one would trust us anyway. Or, we might as well take this opportunity to make our relationship public.” Elara entreated him desperately, “Brother, we can run away together. As long as I can stay with you, I’m willing to give up everything, including a fortune worth millions. What I really want is to be with you…” Lysander fell silent. His breathing grew heavier and heavier. In a daze, he had indeed pondered over running away with Elara many years ago, but he failed. Yet at this very moment, when Elara brought it up again, what arose in Lysander’s mind was a sudden, instictive resistance for no reason.Lysander, without giving it much thought, blurted out his refusal: “No way.”“Why not?” Elara screamed. “Brother, don’t you love me? Boom! Lysander felt a deafening roar near his ears, instantly drowning out every other sound around him. He stood frozen, his face a mask of cold disbelief. “Dad, this joke isn’t funny. He paused, “I know you don’t want to keep Elara at home any longer. But you don’t have to tell liesaSeraphina is gone.” Magnus remained silent for a moment, then abruptly stood up and walked toward the living room. He pulled open the drawer, took out a document from inside, and placed it heavily on the table.Lysander clenched his hands into fists, the veins on the backs of his hands standing out starkly as if he desperately struggled to suppress and endure something deep inside, “Tell Seraphina to come out.” “Don’t you know it?” Magnus sighed, “I did my best to dissuade her when Seraphina proposed divorce.”Lysander clenched his teeth tightly, and a slight tremor leaked out. Magnus continued, “Seraphina’s parents and I were very optimistic about your marriage, but Seraphina was firm and you’d alrea

Lysander was visibly surprised at Felix’s answer, “She didn’t reach out to you?”Felix shook his head firmly. Lysander paused, his eyes flashing with a look of astonishment. After a brief silence, he spoke coldly, “Got it. Just go home.”Left alone in the office, he finished the remaining half cup of coffee before turning on his phone, which had been powered off all night.Countless missed calls and messages flooded into view. Aside from friends, it was mostly Elara. Magnus, knowing Lysander must be busy handling the emergency, had gone straight to his assistant Felix instead.Lysander went through all the missed calls, but Seraphina’s name was nowhere to be found. It caught him off guard. He had called her before powering off. He was absolutely sure Seraphina would call back as she had always been. But now, when he opened the chat box with Seraphina, the last message remained frozen from dozens of days ago, ending with his single word: “Received.” There was no message, let alone a

The camera panned away from the host back to Lysander. His face was a mask of rigid composure, though a flicker of embarrassment betrayed him. Elara was in a complete panic and grabbed Lysander’s sleeve, “Brother! She must be crazy.”Before she could finish her words, Lysander forced a calm tone and spoke up, “Seraphina, stop joking around.” He stood motionless, leaving his figure tall and slender, as steady as a mountain. But, I perceived the slightest tremor in his voice. He continued, “If everyone takes it seriously…”I didn’t hear him out and directly hung up. Rooted to the spot, Lysander looked momentarily awkward, but he quickly concealed and suppressed his emotions. When countless microphones and cameras swarmed toward him, he remained composed, offering a practiced smile. “Seraphina was just joking. Please bear with her.”Elara’s fiancé suddenly called a halt, and the engagement banquet was abruptly interrupted and brought to an end.As Elara lifted her skirt to step into t
