MasukThe heavy steel gate slammed shut behind me. The sound rattled through the concrete. On the other side, Shamblers scraped at the metal. I leaned against the outpost wall, breathing hard.
[DING!]
[Mission ‘The Anchor’s Path’ Complete.] [Reward: +100 SP, 1x Low Grade Stamina Potion (Stored in Warehouse)]I ignored it. My arm stung and the purple haze of the Mist was bleeding through the gate seams.
My vision blurred at the edges. That violet tint was creeping in.“Hands where I can see them. Now.”
The voice was close and I looked up.
It was commander Zahir. Broad shoulders, tactical vest, eyes that didn’t blink. His rifle was leveled at my chest. Hyper-Awareness. To him, my breathing probably sounded like thunder.
“I’m not infected,” I said, raising my hands. “And I’m not a Seeker.”
“You’re showing signs,” Zahir said. His eyes tracked the glow in mine. “You’re mutating.”
“I’m an Architect,” I said. “And if you don’t listen, Evergreen is going to firebomb this entire sector in twenty minutes.
The noise in your head — I can make it stop.” That made the rifle dip.“What?”
“Your blood has the Null-Gene, Zahir,” I said softly. I could feel my Mutation Meter tick up to 0.12%. “You’re the only thing that can ground me. And I’m the only thing that can quiet the world for you.”
I didn’t wait. I walked up to him. The other soldiers tensed, but Zahir lifted a hand to hold them back. He was staring at me like I was impossible. I took his bare forearm.
[CRITICAL SYNC]
[Heartbeat Synchronization: Initializing...] [Mutation Level: Stabilized at 0.10%]Instantly, the heat in my veins cooled.
His shoulders dropped. For the first time in years, the screaming in his head went quiet.“What... what did you do?” he whispered.
“I gave us both a reason to live,” I said.
His grip on my wrist tightened. We were synced now. He needed stability. I needed the Null-Gene.
[DING!]
[Relationship Beat: The Anchor Secured.] [New Main Quest: Gather the Talent.]“Commander!” A corporal burst from the comms tent. “Central confirmed. Cleansing Protocol authorized. Air strikes in twenty minutes.”
Zahir snapped into command mode, but didn’t let go. He looked at the gate. Then at the bruised sky.
“We move,” I said, pulling him toward the garage. “I know a place. Underground physics lab. Deep enough to survive, and it has tech we can use.”
Zahir looked at me. Stoic, but there was trust there I’d never seen in my last life.
“You’re leading, Subject 001.”“Call me Eladia,” I said, a sharp smile pulling at my lips as the System pinged me +50 SP.
“And move fast. We have a world to reclaim. And I’m not letting Evergreen burn it before I find Ophelia.”Sirens wailed. The Descent was over. Now, it was time to build.
----------------------------
The armored transport—a modified BearCat—roared to life, engine low and dangerous.
Zahir didn’t let go of my arm until he’d shoved me into the passenger seat and slammed the door. He slid into the driver’s side, all sharp, tactical motion.Around us the outpost was chaos. Soldiers burned documents and loaded crates. No one was talking. They knew what “Cleansing Protocol” meant. When the fire came, rank wouldn’t matter.
[DING!]
[Mutation Level: 0.11% - Stabilized] [Status: Heartbeat Synchronization Active]“You said you have a location,” Zahir barked, throwing the BearCat into gear. He wasn’t looking at me, but the vein in his neck wasn’t jumping anymore. With me next to him, the Hyper-Awareness was quiet enough for him to think.
“The Hawthorne Physics Lab,” I said, pointing toward the northern gates. “Four levels underground, built into granite. Independent air and power. Even the fire won’t reach it.”
“That’s three miles through a High-Concentration Zone,” Zahir said, knuckling white on the wheel. “The Mist is dense enough to kill through a mask.”
“I don’t need a mask,” I said. The shallow cuts on my arm were already fading to thin silver lines. “And neither do you, as long as I’m with you.”
The gates groaned open. Zahir floored it.
We hit the street as the city sirens changed. Not the police. Not evacuation. The long, mournful wail of “Total Collapse.” The sky wasn’t purple anymore. It was bruised black.
[WARNING!]
[Entering High-Concentration 'Black Zone'] [Visibility: 15%] [Mutation Meter: 0.14%]Outside the reinforced glass, the world blurred. Shadows moved.
The BearCat pushed through, heavy bumper clearing the road. In the side mirror, some figures were changing — posture shifting, outlines hardening.“Eladia,” Zahir’s voice was low. “The noise. It’s coming back.”
I glanced over. Sweat on his brow. Even with the sync, the density of the Mist here was pressing on his Null-Gene. To him, every sound was probably amplified tenfold.
I reached over and placed my hand on the back of his neck.
[SYNC BOOST!] [Survival Points Spent: 50 SP] [Effect: Deep Stabilization]Zahir exhaled. The BearCat steadied. “Better,” he grunted. “Don’t let go. If I lose focus, we’re done.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” I said.
We were halfway to the ridge when white light tore through the clouds.
BOOM.
The shockwave rocked the BearCat. In the distance, a pillar of orange light erupted and swallowed the purple haze. The Cleansing had started. The military was burning the city to “save” it. They didn’t know Evergreen had already won the ground.
“The bridge is out!” Zahir yelled, pointing ahead. The overpass was gone. Twisted metal and fire blocked the road. To the left: the subway entrance. A dark mouth leading under the city.
“In there!” I said. “The tunnels connect to Hawthorne’s basement.”
Zahir didn’t hesitate. He cut across the sidewalk, broke the barrier, and dove us into the tunnel.
Silence hit immediately. Heavy, absolute. Only our headlights cut the dark, and thin wisps of Mist drifting down from above.[DING!]
[New Area Discovered: The Veins of the City] [Threat Level: High] [Note: Tier 3 'Mimics' detected in enclosed spaces.]I shivered. Mimics. They learned voices. They used doors.
“We move fast,” I whispered. My hand stayed on Zahir’s neck. His pulse was steady. It was the only thing keeping me from slipping into cold System logic.
“I know,” Zahir said, eyes scanning the dark beyond the beams. “Something’s tracking us. I can feel it.”
I checked the blue screen in my vision.
Mutation Level: 0.18%
Combat Power: +15% Active“Let them track,” I said. My voice came out lower. The Sovereign Serum in my blood was warming. “I’ve got a warehouse full of gear. And a Commander who doesn’t miss. They should be scared of us.”
We drove deeper. The sirens faded. And were replaced by something else.
A soft, wet sound. Movement, just out of sight, along the tunnel ceiling. The old world ended with fire. The new one started with the understanding that we weren’t at the top anymore. But as I looked at Zahir, and then at my System stats glowing, I knew one thing.
I was going to be the one holding the leash.
The subway tunnel was suffocating. It wasn’t just dark — the Black Mist had seeped down from the surface, turning the air thick and metallic. Our headlights cut two white paths through it, bouncing off rusted tracks and abandoned train cars.Inside the BearCat, every sound echoed. Debris under the tires felt like gunfire.[DING!][Mutation Level: 0.19%][Warning: Enclosed space detected. Hive Sense sensitivity increased.]“Eyes up, Zahir,” I muttered. My hand was still on his shoulder. He was tense, vibrating. With Hyper-Awareness, this place had to be overwhelming. “The System says there are Mimics down here. They don’t fight fair.”Zahir didn’t look away from the road. “I can hear them. Sounds like static.” He shifted gears. “And it’s Commander. Or sir.”I gave a short laugh. “Look around, Commander. The chain of command just got firebombed. Out there the city’s burning. In here it’s just us and whatever’s hunting. I think we’re past ‘sir’.”He didn’t answer. His jaw ticked.Fif

The scream that ripped through the wholesale club wasn’t human. It was gurgling. It set my teeth on edge. Cereal boxes crashed. Shopping carts screeched. People trampled each other for the automatic doors, but they didn’t get it yet. The “Black Zones” were already forming outside. The Black Mist wasn’t coming. The blue screen didn’t vanish. The clock was ticking.I bolted outside and flagged down a cab. “Green’s Wholesale Club. The one by the docks. I’ll give you an extra fifty if you run every yellow light.”The driver grinned. “You got it, boss.”In the backseat, I started a list. Last life I wasted D
The last thing I felt was cold spit on my face and the sound of my ribs snapping like dry twigs. It hurts like hell. But the smell is what I remember most. Metallic blood. Wet rot. Death. And then there was Liam. My “loving” boyfriend.I can still see him. Sweat-slick. Pale. Eyes wild with fear as he shoved me backward into the dark.“Sorry, Eladia! Better you than me!” He giggled. That bastard. Five years. Five years of me paying his bills, carrying his shit, being his human pack mule. And he used me as bait for a pack of shamblers. He didn’t even look back. He just ran. Then, everything went black. I thought I was dead. I should’ve been dead.Gasp.I shot upright so fast the room spun. I wasn’t on cold pavement. I wasn’t torn apart. I was in bed. My phone buzzed on the nightstand.*8:12 AM. Tues
