Chapter 4

Author: AAA Builder
That night, in front of every guest and every livestream camera, I barked like a dog.

Charlotte sat on the sofa without looking at me again.

By the time the party finally ended, it was nearly midnight. Guests filtered out in small groups, still laughing as they passed me.

"So that's the Bennetts' eldest son? He does a pretty convincing dog."

"No kidding. Wearing a dog collar and a butler's uniform... if I didn't know better, I'd think he actually was one."

I'd been kneeling for so long that my legs had gone numb. Using the wall for support, I struggled to my feet and limped toward the guest room.

The moment I stepped inside, I heard a click behind me. The door was locked from the outside.

Almost at the same time, the air conditioner roared to life overhead. Freezing air poured from the vents as the temperature plummeted.

There wasn't a blanket anywhere in the room, and the bedsheet was as thin as paper. I had no idea how low they'd set the thermostat, but the cold cut through me like knives, sinking straight into my bones.

Curled up in the corner of the bed, I hugged the battered little lion against my chest. My teeth began to chatter.

One hour passed.

Then another.

My fingertips turned purple. I could no longer feel my lips. My body shook uncontrollably as my consciousness slowly slipped away.

The System's voice suddenly echoed in my mind.

System: [Departure Countdown: 00:28:00]

System: [Host's body temperature continues to fall. Vital signs are approaching zero.]

Almost there.

I closed my eyes and stopped fighting. It didn't matter anymore.

I was leaving anyway. What difference did a little sooner or a little later make?

Just as consciousness was about to leave me completely, another notification appeared.

System: [If the Host survives until dawn and completes the departure process, the Retribution System will activate.]

My eyes flew open.

System: [At that time, everyone who has harmed the Host will suffer every ounce of the Host's pain, multiplied a thousandfold.]

The freezing air kept pouring down. I stared at the ceiling, barely able to move my eyes.

"Everyone?"

System: [Yes. Everyone.]

I bit through my tongue. The taste of blood filled my mouth.

Warm.

Not enough.

I pressed my wrist against the sharp metal edge of the bed frame and rubbed it back and forth until the skin split open and blood seeped from the wound. I caught it with my other hand and smeared it across my arms, my stomach, and my legs.

It was warm. That tiny bit of warmth kept me alive, one minute at a time.

Several times, I blacked out completely. Each time, the pain dragged me back.

Blood still flowed from my tongue. The flesh on my wrist had been worn open.

I had no idea how I survived the night. I only remembered seeing the first ray of sunrise slip through the gap in the curtains.

System: [Congratulations, Host. Mission complete. The Retribution System has been activated.]

System: [Departure Countdown: 5, 4, 3...]

My body slowly grew warm. Then, it became impossibly light.

I felt myself rise from the bed, drifting through the ceiling and above the roof.

I looked down. Someone lay curled up on the guest room bed. His body was covered in blood, and his lips were blackened from the cold. Clutched tightly in his arms was a battered little lion.

It was me.

No, it was my corpse.

Just then, Charlotte's voice drifted up from downstairs.

"My chest's been hurting since I woke up this morning. I don't know why." She hesitated, sounding strangely uneasy. "Maybe I went too far with him last night, but the test's over now. It's all behind us. I came today because I want to discuss our wedding date."

Vivian spoke next, "Me too. My heart's been racing since this morning. It feels like something's missing. Today's the perfect day to take him to the family chapel and officially enter his name into the Bennett family register."

Claire sighed. "He went through a lot last night. I need to make it up to him today."

Natalie turned to the butler, Walter Collins. "Go bring him downstairs. The test is over."

Walter climbed the stairs and opened the guest room door. "Graham, the young ladies would like you to..."

His voice stopped abruptly.

A heartbeat later, a scream ripped through the entire estate.

"Help! Somebody help!"

On the day of my funeral, the sky was clear and cloudless. There wasn't even a breeze. My sisters and Charlotte knelt before my grave. White lilies blanketed the ground, and my name was carved into the headstone: Graham Bennett.Claire gently placed the little lion in front of it. She had spent the entire night sewing it back together, carefully stuffing the cotton back inside, stitching up its torn ear, and painstakingly embroidering the words "Graham" all over again."Here you go." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I lost it, but I've fixed it now."Natalie knelt beside her, clutching the necklace in her hand. She had always believed Lucas bought it for her. Now she knew. I'd worked three months of part-time jobs to pay for it. She opened her mouth again and again, trying to speak, but not a single word came out.Vivian knelt at the front of the grave, her back perfectly straight, like a statue carved from stone. She stared at my name for a long time. Then she slowly bent

Claire closed the journal.Vivian stood frozen in place, the muscles in her face twitching uncontrollably.Natalie sank to the floor, clutching her head in both hands.Charlotte leaned against the wall without a trace of expression. The front of her blouse had already been soaked with blood. She couldn't understand it. It felt as though her heart had been torn apart, and she couldn't stop coughing up blood. At that same moment, all three sisters doubled over. The agony in their chests reached its peak. It felt as though someone had ripped their hearts straight out of their bodies.Vivian's knees slammed into the tile with a heavy thud. Supporting herself with one hand, she slowly raised her head and fixed her gaze on Lucas, who stood at the foot of the staircase. A mouthful of blood spilled from her lips."You killed my brother."Lucas dropped to his knees with a thud and scrambled toward her, wrapping both arms around her leg. "Vivian, that's not true! I was just afraid you'd s

The car hadn't even come to a complete stop before Natalie threw open the door and rushed inside.Lucas was sitting on the living room sofa, scrolling through his phone. Hearing the commotion, he looked up with his usual sweet, innocent smile."You're back?"Natalie stormed over, snatched the phone from his hand, and hurled it to the floor. The screen shattered."Tell me the truth. Did you set Graham up seven years ago?"Lucas froze for a split second. Then his eyes instantly filled with tears. "Nat, what are you talking about? I don't understand..."Vivian and Claire walked in. Charlotte followed several steps behind.Vivian stopped in front of him, staring down at him coldly. "Drew Walker confessed to everything."Lucas's face drained of color, but only for an instant. Then the tears came pouring out."Vivian, I know what you're talking about."He dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around her leg. "I was wrong. But I was terrified. When Graham came home, all of you s

Inside the police interview room, Detective Daniel Brooks opened a case file and slid a stack of documents toward them across the table."We've recently been investigating a major insurance fraud scheme. It led us back to the victim in the school poisoning case from seven years ago—Drew Walker."He pulled out a medical report."According to the original diagnosis, Drew suffered severe liver and kidney damage from the poisoning and would require medication for the rest of his life. He used that report to file a substantial disability insurance claim."But during a medical examination last month..." Detective Brooks turned the report around and pointed to the results."Every one of his organs is functioning normally. There are no lasting effects from poisoning. The original disability report was falsified."Vivian accepted the report with shaking fingers.Detective Brooks continued, "We reopened the original case. The evidence we have now indicates that Graham Bennett may have bee

Everyone froze.Vivian was the first to speak."He froze to death? It's August. It's ninety-five degrees outside, and you're telling me he froze to death?"The doctor spread the report across the desk and pointed to the data. "His core body temperature was only seventy-nine degrees. He suffered extensive frost injuries to all four extremities, consistent with prolonged exposure to subfreezing temperatures for at least four to five hours."He turned to the next page. "As for the wounds on his body, these injuries weren't caused by a suicide attempt. He was using his own blood to keep himself warm."Silence fell over the hallway."What do you mean?" Claire's voice tightened. The doctor pointed to the wound analysis. "The injury to his wrist wasn't caused by a vertical or horizontal cut. It was a friction wound."He repeatedly scraped his wrist against a hard edge until the skin split open. Then he smeared the warm blood over his arms, torso, and legs. The heat from fresh blood ca
