Chapter 3

Author: AAA Builder
Everyone turned toward the entrance.

The sharp click of high heels echoed through the room as Charlotte Prescott strode inside. She cut straight through the crowd, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me to my feet.

"Vivian, your family has gone too far." Charlotte's voice was icy as she stared at my eldest sister. "If you're going to bring him home, why would you humiliate him like this?"

The living room fell silent. Every livestream camera immediately swung toward her.

Standing behind her, I stared at her back. It pulled me twenty years into the past.

When I was four years old, I entered the orphanage. Charlotte was there too.

She was the smallest girl in the orphanage. Her ponytail was always crooked, and she spoke so softly it was as if she was afraid of disturbing anyone.

The older kids stole her lunch and tossed her favorite hair clip into a ditch. She would only curl up against the wall, hugging her knees without making a sound.

I was the one who snatched her lunch back and climbed into the ditch to retrieve her hair clip.

One of the older boys shoved me to the ground, scraping my knees until they bled. She cried harder than I did. Clutching my sleeve, she blew gently on my wounds through her tears.

"Graham, promise we'll never be separated." Her voice trembled between sniffles. "No matter what anyone says, I'll always stand by your side."

After that, she followed me everywhere. She insisted on sitting beside me at every meal and dragged her little bed next to mine every night.

Whenever the other children teased her for being an unwanted orphan, she'd hide behind me and secretly clutch the corner of my shirt.

Then one day, people came to the orphanage and said she was the long-lost daughter of the Prescott family.

Before she left, she stood behind the orphanage gate, crying so hard she could barely breathe. She pressed that old hair clip into my hand and refused to let go.

"Graham, wait for me. I'll never leave you behind."

The following year, the Bennetts found me too. That very day, she came to the Bennett estate, and our families arranged our engagement.

During those seven years in prison, I'd wanted to die more times than I could count.

Charlotte was the one who kept coming to visit. Separated by a sheet of glass, she'd smile at me and say, "Just hang on a little longer. Once you're out, we'll get married."

If there was anything left tying me to this world, she was the only reason.

Vivian frowned but said nothing.

Off to the side, Lucas lowered his head and quietly wiped at the corner of his eye.

"Charlotte, I never wanted to make things difficult for Graham." His voice was soft and full of hurt. "It's just... while no one was looking, he hid my cuff link."

I froze.

"It was my mother's keepsake. It was a limited edition, and I've been looking everywhere for it." He looked up at Charlotte, tears clinging to his lashes. "I don't mean anything by it. I'm just really heartbroken."

Charlotte stiffened. Then she turned to look at me.

"Is that true?"

Just three quiet words.

I met her eyes.

When we were four years old, those same eyes had filled with tears as she knelt beside me, blowing on my scraped knees and promising she'd always stand by me.

Now, all I saw in them was doubt.

We'd known each other for twenty years, and she was asking if I'd stolen from someone.

I said nothing.

She waited. When I still didn't answer, something changed in her expression. Slowly, she let go of my wrist. Then she took a step back.

Charlotte closed her eyes. When she opened them again, every trace of warmth was gone.

"So prison really did change you." She looked at me, emphasizing every word. "It seems crawling like a dog isn't enough. You'll kneel and bark like one. And then you'll apologize to Lucas."

I watched her lips move as each word left her mouth.

Suddenly, those twenty years together felt like nothing more than a dream.

The System chimed quietly in my mind.

System: [Departure Countdown: 06:52:00]

Without the slightest hesitation, I dropped to my knees.

On the day of my funeral, the sky was clear and cloudless. There wasn't even a breeze. My sisters and Charlotte knelt before my grave. White lilies blanketed the ground, and my name was carved into the headstone: Graham Bennett.Claire gently placed the little lion in front of it. She had spent the entire night sewing it back together, carefully stuffing the cotton back inside, stitching up its torn ear, and painstakingly embroidering the words "Graham" all over again."Here you go." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I lost it, but I've fixed it now."Natalie knelt beside her, clutching the necklace in her hand. She had always believed Lucas bought it for her. Now she knew. I'd worked three months of part-time jobs to pay for it. She opened her mouth again and again, trying to speak, but not a single word came out.Vivian knelt at the front of the grave, her back perfectly straight, like a statue carved from stone. She stared at my name for a long time. Then she slowly bent

Claire closed the journal.Vivian stood frozen in place, the muscles in her face twitching uncontrollably.Natalie sank to the floor, clutching her head in both hands.Charlotte leaned against the wall without a trace of expression. The front of her blouse had already been soaked with blood. She couldn't understand it. It felt as though her heart had been torn apart, and she couldn't stop coughing up blood. At that same moment, all three sisters doubled over. The agony in their chests reached its peak. It felt as though someone had ripped their hearts straight out of their bodies.Vivian's knees slammed into the tile with a heavy thud. Supporting herself with one hand, she slowly raised her head and fixed her gaze on Lucas, who stood at the foot of the staircase. A mouthful of blood spilled from her lips."You killed my brother."Lucas dropped to his knees with a thud and scrambled toward her, wrapping both arms around her leg. "Vivian, that's not true! I was just afraid you'd s

The car hadn't even come to a complete stop before Natalie threw open the door and rushed inside.Lucas was sitting on the living room sofa, scrolling through his phone. Hearing the commotion, he looked up with his usual sweet, innocent smile."You're back?"Natalie stormed over, snatched the phone from his hand, and hurled it to the floor. The screen shattered."Tell me the truth. Did you set Graham up seven years ago?"Lucas froze for a split second. Then his eyes instantly filled with tears. "Nat, what are you talking about? I don't understand..."Vivian and Claire walked in. Charlotte followed several steps behind.Vivian stopped in front of him, staring down at him coldly. "Drew Walker confessed to everything."Lucas's face drained of color, but only for an instant. Then the tears came pouring out."Vivian, I know what you're talking about."He dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around her leg. "I was wrong. But I was terrified. When Graham came home, all of you s

Inside the police interview room, Detective Daniel Brooks opened a case file and slid a stack of documents toward them across the table."We've recently been investigating a major insurance fraud scheme. It led us back to the victim in the school poisoning case from seven years ago—Drew Walker."He pulled out a medical report."According to the original diagnosis, Drew suffered severe liver and kidney damage from the poisoning and would require medication for the rest of his life. He used that report to file a substantial disability insurance claim."But during a medical examination last month..." Detective Brooks turned the report around and pointed to the results."Every one of his organs is functioning normally. There are no lasting effects from poisoning. The original disability report was falsified."Vivian accepted the report with shaking fingers.Detective Brooks continued, "We reopened the original case. The evidence we have now indicates that Graham Bennett may have bee

Everyone froze.Vivian was the first to speak."He froze to death? It's August. It's ninety-five degrees outside, and you're telling me he froze to death?"The doctor spread the report across the desk and pointed to the data. "His core body temperature was only seventy-nine degrees. He suffered extensive frost injuries to all four extremities, consistent with prolonged exposure to subfreezing temperatures for at least four to five hours."He turned to the next page. "As for the wounds on his body, these injuries weren't caused by a suicide attempt. He was using his own blood to keep himself warm."Silence fell over the hallway."What do you mean?" Claire's voice tightened. The doctor pointed to the wound analysis. "The injury to his wrist wasn't caused by a vertical or horizontal cut. It was a friction wound."He repeatedly scraped his wrist against a hard edge until the skin split open. Then he smeared the warm blood over his arms, torso, and legs. The heat from fresh blood ca
