Seraphine stood there and listened as Clarissa and Clifford shamelessly twisted the truth. She never would've thought Clifford would be so indulgent of Clarissa—enough to let her call him her husband in public.

"I'm the one who married you, Clifford. You cheated on me, yet you're now twisting the truth. Doesn't that weigh down your conscience?" she asked, her chest heaving with rage. She'd never been this angry in her life.

Clarissa looked at her with grievance. "What are you talking about, Seraphine? Everyone in Jeriton witnessed Clifford's grand wedding proposal, and we registered our marriage the very next day. When could my husband have had time to marry you? Stop trying to smear his reputation with this nonsense!

"I know he's an outstanding man, and I know you've always wanted to marry him. But matters of the heart can't be forced! Please just stop harassing us, Ms. Lodge. There are plenty of good men in this world—I'm sure you'll meet someone better in the future."
