Clifford's eyes burned with anger again. He had yet to even confront Jim about the mess he'd made.

He snarled, "Didn't you say the men you got could be relied on, Professor Horne? Why was Seraphine in Johansen Tower's parking garage, then?"

Worse still, Elliott had saved her. The incident had left him with the impression that Clifford was of poor character, which led him to refuse to invest in their project.

Jim was also exasperated. "One of them was highly interested in your new product and wanted to see it for themselves. They thought Seraphine wouldn't wake up so soon after being sedated, but she suddenly regained consciousness when they arrived at the parking garage. You know what happened after that.

"Also, I spoke to one of Professor Lodge's colleagues today. He told me she's dead. Is that true?"
