Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Worry Free
The day Jasper Carter brought Natalie Klutz home from the hospital, I was just clocking out from my last case.

Right as I hit the front steps, I caught laughter inside.

"This baby's adorable. Look at those eyebrows—just like our Jasper's. Natalie, you really made us proud!" Josephine was glowing, cradling the baby.

Jasper strolled out of the kitchen with a steaming bowl.

"You've been through a lot," he said. "I made this cream soup to help you bounce back. You still need rest."

He sat on the edge of the bed, feeding Natalie like some picture-perfect husband. They looked like one big happy family.

Raymond shook a rattle, grinning like he'd just won the lottery.

"This little guy's got his mom's charm. Thank God he's nothing like that buzzkill Emily. Can you imagine a doctor as his mom? Total nightmare."

My hand clenched around the doorknob.

I remembered the first time I met Raymond—how he'd clapped me on the shoulder and bragged about having a doctor in the family.

Now I was just some joke who didn't deserve one.

Right after we got married, Jasper's family hit rock bottom. I gave them everything—hundreds of thousands. My entire savings, gone.

All I did was leave for a year of advanced training. When I came back, it was like this house had erased me.

I looked down and forced a bitter smile.

We'd been married three years. We had a baby once too.

But after the accident, I lost it—and with it, my chance at ever having kids again.

When the doctor told me, I cried like I couldn't breathe. Jasper held me and swore I was the only one he'd ever have kids with.

Said he'd give it all up for me.

And now? He'd broken that promise—for his ex's so-called dying wish.

I still remembered the day I left for my program—Jasper cried like a kid, clinging to me like he couldn't let go.

For a year, we talked every day. Even our coworkers teased us for acting like newlyweds.

Then a month ago, I finally got time off and booked a flight home.

Nine hours in the air, no sleep, no complaints. I headed straight back—only to catch Jasper and Natalie walking hand in hand through the neighborhood. And yeah, she was definitely pregnant.

Natalie's voice snapped me out of it.

"Emily? When did you get back? Why are you just standing there?"

The whole room turned to stare.

When Josephine spotted the resignation letter in my hand, her frown got even deeper.

I came out of it fine. Ian didn't—his leg took the worst of the blast.I felt so guilty, I promised I'd stay by his side no matter what.At first, it was about making it right—being there for him because he got hurt saving me.But the longer we were together, the more that changed. His warmth, his steady patience, the way he always showed up—It chipped away at the ice around my heart. And somewhere along the way, I realized—I could love again. With a little push from our teammates, I finally let my guard down.Ian and I made it official—we promised to grow old together, side by side.Maybe fate saw how wrecked I'd been and figured I deserved someone who actually showed up.This time, I wasn't letting go.***The day I landed back in Crenova, Dr. Steinbeck was waiting at the airport. He gave me a once-over, smiling gently. "You've lost weight. Emily, these past two years must've been tough."It was such a simple thing to say, but it hit me hard.I blinked back the stin

I looked him dead in the eye, voice sharp and steady."I'm not going back to the man I walked away from. And I'm definitely not playing free babysitter for you and your kid. Give it up."Jasper's eyes welled up. He opened his mouth to speak.I shut it down."I've got work to do. It's dangerous here. You should go back to Crenova."I turned and walked off toward camp.Behind me, he called out, "Emily! If you're not leaving, then I'm not either. I'll stay here. And when you're done, I'll go back with you."I didn't even flinch. Wasn't about to entertain that. But I'd barely made it a few steps before I heard him on the phone—his voice tight, panicked."What? Natalie's dead? I'm heading back to Crenova now. Just wait for me!"Right then, two bombers roared overhead. My body moved on instinct—I shoved Jasper to the ground."Emily, are you crazy?" he yelled, but the blast drowned him out.The ground shook hard, dirt and debris raining down like a storm.I didn't waste time. So why show up now? That thought snapped me back. I shoved him off, cold."Jasper, we're already divorced."His eyes went even redder, voice all wrecked. "Emily, please... don't shut me out. I searched every airport, asked everyone just to find you. You don't know what happened after you left. My mom... she's gone."I froze. I didn't expect that. Josephine—gone? Before I could say anything, he kept going. "Emily, I'm sorry."None of us believed you. We thought you were the liar. But it was Natalie. She faked everything. Never found a real doctor. My mom kept getting worse."If we'd just listened to you... maybe she'd still be here. It's my fault. I should've trusted you. I hurt you, and I lost her."My dad was right—I ruin everything."He dropped to the ground, hands over his face, just sobbing.I didn't move. But something shifted in me.During the past few months, I'd watched people die nearly every day. I thought I was numb to all of it.But hearing Jasper break down lik

Jasper sat there, head down, looking like a kid who knew he blew it.Raymond's yelling set Nathan off—he started wailing in Jasper's arms.Fed up, Raymond grabbed the baby and dropped him onto a plastic chair. "Crying again? What is he, royalty or something? Jasper, he's your kid. Handle it."Jasper didn't even blink. He pulled out his phone, dialing Emily. Maybe she could still get through to Dr. Holgate. But the call wouldn't go through.Emily was already on a plane, gone.***On the plane, I leaned against the window, watching the world shrink as we lifted off.It didn't feel real. From here on out, I wasn't tied to any one place—I belonged to the world now. After a brutal ten-hour flight, we landed completely wiped. This wasn't Crenova's calm. This place was chaos—armed patrols everywhere, one wrong move and you're done. While we rested in the truck, our team leader filled us in on what we were walking into.He handed each of us a gun.Said saving lives mattered—but

Jasper just stood there, watching Emily walk off like she was done for good. He told himself once things settled, they'd talk it out.No signature, no real divorce—right? That thought gave him a sliver of hope. What he didn't get was, the second he got Natalie pregnant—the second he betrayed Emily—He'd already lost her.***After Emily dipped, Jasper and the rest scrambled to get Natalie to the ER. But halfway there, Josephine started wheezing hard, face turning this scary shade of purple. She clutched Jasper's hand, gasping."Jasper... help me, I can't breathe..."Natalie, still hanging on his sleeve, whispered, "Jasper... I can't breathe either..."His brain short-circuited. Who was he even supposed to help first?Right before they wheeled Josephine into surgery, Dr. Steinbeck showed up—with Dr. Holgate, the top asthma guy.Jasper dropped to his knees, voice cracking. "Dr. Steinbeck, Dr. Holgate, please—save my mom! Her asthma's bad. There was this girl, Natalie Klutz—she

"What are you doing? Don't start something you can't take back."He grabbed my sleeve, eyes wide, whispering like it'd fix anything. I slipped free without a word.If you've got nothing to hide, why are you freaking out?I faced the crowd, steady. "Thanks for coming today. A lot of you were there when Jasper and I got married. I never forgot your well wishes. But I bet you all saw that family portrait by the entrance."Jasper's face locked up.He lunged, reaching for the mic. I swerved and held on tighter."Yeah, I was shocked too," I said. "I was gone a year for training. Came back, and boom—Jasper's playing house with someone else."They even had a kid. Then had the guts to say it was for me, like I'd just raise their baby and smile about it. Nope. Not happening. I'm not taking that hit."I yanked the divorce papers from my coat and dropped them at his feet."Jasper Carter, I want out."I'd been carrying them ever since I caught him and Natalie together. He went ghost-whit
