Chapter 1

My father called almost immediately.

He sounded genuinely relieved. For years, he had known there was a man in Chicago I could not let go of, though I had never told him who it was.

He had no idea that the man who had kept me hidden for four years was the ally he trusted most.

“Livia, the Mercers received your answer,” Gideon said. “Bennett has been waiting. Once you return, the two families can announce the match.”

“I know.” I stood before the hotel window, watching Chicago wake beneath me. “I’ll come back to New York as soon as I finish things here.”

My father believed I had finally walked away from a hopeless attachment.

He never would have guessed that the man responsible was Ronan Whitlock—the very man he had sent to Chicago to protect me.

After the call, I took my resignation letter to Whitlock Holdings. As Ronan’s private assistant, I had access to sensitive family affairs. Leaving normally required a month-long security review and handover.

I had seven days.

The HR director read my request and shook her head.

“An expedited departure requires Mr. Whitlock’s signature.”

Ronan again.

Even leaving him required his permission.

I walked to the far end of the empty hallway and dialed the number I knew by heart. After a long wait, a languid female voice answered.

“Hello? Are you looking for Ronan? He’s in the shower.”

An hour earlier, my teeth had left marks on his hand.

Now he was showering in another woman’s room.

“Never mind. Thank you.”

I hung up. Less than two minutes later, Ronan called back.

“What do you need?”

His voice was cold and professional, as though he had not been whispering my name in bed the night before.

“Mr. Whitlock, I have a document that requires your signature.”

“Send it to my office.” He paused. “Go to the lake house tonight and clear out your belongings. Zoya is moving in. She doesn’t want another woman’s things there.”

The lake house had been the only place where we did not have to pretend. By day, I was Gideon Calloway’s daughter and Ronan’s private assistant. At night, I was the woman he allowed into his bed.

Now I was not even permitted to leave a trace behind.

“There’s an empty apartment in Lakeview,” he continued. “Whitlock security will still cover you. I promised Gideon I would take care of you.”

“That won’t be necessary, Mr. Whitlock.”

He was quiet for a moment. “You don’t sleep well in unfamiliar places. At least keep the guards for the first week.”

“I’ll manage.”

Zoya called his name in the background. Ronan said he had to go, but neither of us ended the call. After several seconds of silence, I hung up.

Once he signed the letter, these four years would be over.

I would return to New York and marry Bennett Mercer.

That evening, I went back to the lake house.

The austere black-and-white interior had disappeared beneath warm colors, fresh flowers, plush toys, and Russian nesting dolls.

Once, I had tried to leave a stuffed bear in the entryway.

Ronan had removed it that same day.

“This is a safe house, not a girl’s bedroom,” he’d said.

Zoya had been back for one night, and the entire house had already been remade for her.

“She thought the place was too cold,” Ronan came up behind me, a lazy smile in his voice.

“She needs something familiar after returning to Chicago.”

I said nothing.

He hooked an arm loosely around my waist and gave me a small squeeze, as if he could smooth everything over without even trying.

“She saw your things last night and got upset, so I had them packed away. Come on, don’t make a thing out of it.”

He led me downstairs, certain I would follow.

When he opened the storage-room door, I saw everything I owned piled in a dark corner like trash waiting to be thrown away.

I did not see Ronan again for six months. All Whitlock business passed through official channels, and his name never appeared on my private phone.I devoted myself to the Calloway ports and our new Mercer shipping network. Bennett oversaw finance, laundering channels, and restructuring legitimate companies. I controlled the ports, security, and regional operations. We argued over profit allocations and routes, but he never expected obedience because I was his wife. Our disagreements were direct. Neither of us pretended that marriage had erased the separate interests of our families. Bennett defended Mercer priorities, and I defended Calloway priorities. Once a decision was reached, he did not carry resentment into our private life or treat my refusal as a challenge to his authority.During one meeting, both advisory teams favored Bennett's plan until I identified a route crossing hostile territory."More guards can manage the risk," a Mercer adviser said."No. They don't want the cargo

Ronan looked exhausted, but I did not ask how he was."Nine minutes," I reminded him.He glanced at the others. "I will not discuss us before them.""There is no us. You may leave."He placed a document on the table. "Whitlock counsel drafted this statement. I will publicly acknowledge our four-year relationship and confirm you were neither merely my assistant nor my ward. You will return to Chicago as my partner.""What about Zoya?""She has left the lake house, and I revoked her financial access. Noah is my son, and I will support him, but Zoya will not interfere with us."He spoke as if redistributing houses, money, and titles could restore everything."You may retain your Calloway assets and duties," he continued. "I will not interfere with your work. We can spend part of each year in New York. I will compensate you."Again, compensation. An apartment for four hidden years, money for humiliation, a statement for destroyed trust. He still presented every concession as though it shou

Three days later, the Calloway and Mercer leadership met in the estate's operations room. Attorneys, financial advisers, territory chiefs, and security heads sat beneath digital maps of ports, warehouses, and East Coast routes. The first consequence of our marriage was not my new surname. It was a shift in the balance of power between Chicago and New York.Gideon placed a document before me. "These are the Calloway interests in the ports and legitimate shipping companies. You control them from today.""Why now?""They are not a dowry. They were always yours. I managed them while you chose to remain in Chicago. Now that you are home, take your place."To him, I was first the Calloway heir, not merely a Mercer wife.Only then did I see how much I had surrendered for Ronan: a revocable assistant's position, a house and accounts he controlled, security dependent on his approval. I had handed him my life until even leaving required his signature. In Chicago, I had mistaken access to his wor

"A man who mistook possession for love and only remembered how to confess after he lost control."The chapel fell silent."Enough, Livia," Ronan said, forcing patience into his voice. "I know you're angry, but you cannot marry a man you barely know because of what happened with Zoya."He still thought this was a tantrum and could not imagine me making a choice that had nothing to do with him. That belief had survived every warning. He had watched me throw away our memories, signed my resignation, and learned that I had returned to New York, yet he still interpreted each act as an attempt to make him react. He could not accept that my life had stopped revolving around his response."Why would I use my marriage to punish you?" I asked. "You are not as important to this decision as you think."I lifted the agreement drafted by the Calloway and Mercer attorneys."I reviewed the prenuptial terms, assets, and alliance provisions. I know exactly what I am choosing and what this marriage bring

"Do whatever you want," Ronan interrupted. "Marta has access to the household account."He left for headquarters despite Zoya's protests. His office felt wrong. There was no breakfast on the desk, no schedule arranged by urgency, no hangover medicine in the drawer. His spare shirt was unironed, and no one had sorted the most urgent intelligence to the top of the safe. The new assistant brought coffee. Ronan tasted it and frowned."What's wrong with this?"His secretary answered carefully. "Miss Calloway prepared your coffee for four years. She adjusted the milk according to how much you drank the previous night."Again, Livia.Only now did he see how thoroughly I had entered his life. He had known I loved him and would rarely refuse him. He had never imagined those quiet acts could disappear."When is she coming back?"The secretary stared. "Miss Calloway resigned. You signed the authorization yourself."Ronan remembered the document I had handed him in the storage room. He had signed

Ronan went still. The call ended.Marriage. The woman who had followed Ronan for four years was about to become another man's wife.He remained in the hospital corridor long after the call ended. He could not decide whether the pressure in his chest came from relief that my devotion would finally disappear or from the sudden knowledge that I might have a future in which he had no place at all.His first response was anger. He decided the Calloways were provoking him and that I was using the wedding to force him into acknowledging me. If he appeared in person, I would abandon the ridiculous ceremony. I loved him. I could not truly marry someone else.Yet the thought brought no relief.Zoya emerged from her room and noticed the ointment. "Is that for me?"Ronan slipped it into his coat. "Your wound has already been treated."He took her hand. "Does it still hurt?"But he saw another skin in his mind, blistered and bleeding, and could no longer tell which woman he had meant to ask.The oi
