Chapter 1

Serena's POV

"Mom, can you not hold my hand?"

It was my son Tullio Corleone's birthday party. As we'd always planned, we took a family photo to commemorate every major milestone in his life, then added it to the photo wall we'd made especially for him.

We'd taken nine such photos since the day he was born. Over the years, Tullio had grown from a tiny bundle in my arms into a little boy with a mind of his own.

But today, just as I took his hand for our photo, he suddenly yanked it away. He pulled so hard that I stumbled, nearly twisting my ankle. "What's wrong, Tullio? Are you feeling sick?"

Tullio shook his head and gave me his sweetest, most pleading look. But what came out of his mouth left me utterly humiliated. "Can I take this year's picture with Marta instead?"

He paused before continuing as casually as if he were asking for another slice of cake. "Marta's younger than you, Mom. This picture is really important, and I want it to be perfect. We're going to hang it in the main hall where everyone who visits can see it.

"Please, Mom? Just say yes. We've already taken so many pictures together anyway."

Marta Bellandi was my husband Niccolo Corleone's childhood friend and personal assistant.

She'd returned from studying abroad and joined his staff just over a year ago. In that short time, she'd managed to drive a wedge between me and Niccolo, who had once adored me, while turning Tullio, who used to cling to my side, against me.

She'd even reduced me, the once-composed and dignified wife of Don Corleone, to someone everyone now saw as an unreasonable, hysterical woman.

Marta's eyes lit up at Tullio's request, but the moment she caught my gaze, she quickly put on an alarmed look and waved her hands in protest. "Oh, I couldn't possibly! Mrs. Corleone would never agree to that.

"I'm already so happy to be invited to Tullio's birthday party. But for such an important moment, his mother should really be the one standing beside him."

Despite her words, the disappointment in Marta's voice was unmistakable.

At that, Tullio immediately pouted and turned his head away, refusing to look at me.

Niccolo frowned. "It's just a photo, Serena. Don't make such a big deal out of it. It's Tullio's birthday. Can't you at least let him have this one thing?"

With that, he personally ushered Marta over and positioned her where I'd been standing. "It's Tullio's special day, so we should respect his wishes. He's the one we're celebrating, after all. Don't worry. If anyone decides to make a scene, I'll handle it."

As he spoke, he shot me a pointed look.

I froze, then let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. I hadn't even said a word, yet Niccolo and Tullio had already decided I was going to throw a fit.

Then again, I'd done exactly that far too many times before. But when it came down to it, all I'd ever done was cast aside my pride and dignity in a desperate attempt to save a marriage I couldn't bear to let go of.

Niccolo and I had fallen in love at first sight. Our eyes met across a crowded ballroom, and in that instant, all the noise around me seemed to fade away. All I could hear was the frantic beating of my own heart.

Despite the crowd moving between us, we both made our way through the guests toward each other, as though drawn by some invisible force.

He was Don Corleone, a powerful Mafia boss known throughout the region. I was merely a designer who had just opened her own studio.

Yet that night, my feelings overwhelmed all reason. Despite knowing how far apart our worlds were, I threw caution to the wind and accepted his advances.

Over the next six months, our love only grew stronger. We kissed beneath the Bridge of Sighs in Bellacosta. We promised to remain faithful to each other beneath the towering landmark of Montelune.

He took me on a journey across the continent, showing me one beautiful place after another. Finally, against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset on the island of Santelira, Niccolo proposed.

But even before that, while we were still traveling, his mother had called to warn me.

"He's Don Corleone. Of course, he's going to have a few flings. That's perfectly normal for a man in his position. But don't fool yourself into thinking you'll ever marry into the Corleone family, Serena.

"In our world, family interests come before everything else. Marrying him will only end badly for you."

But I refused to believe her. I couldn't believe that a man who had rejected an arranged marriage for my sake, even enduring a brutal whipping at the hands of his own family, could be someone who cared only about power and profit.

Niccolo had cleared every obstacle standing in the way of our marriage, proving to everyone that I was the only woman he would ever marry. After everything he'd done for us, how could I not even find the courage to stay by his side?

And so, we got married. In our second year of marriage, we welcomed Tullio into our world.

Contrary to his mother's warnings, Niccolo wasn't a man who cared only about his family's interests. In fact, he often turned down social engagements just to spend more time with Tullio and me.

Whenever he was away on business, he would worry that missing our wedding anniversary would upset me. Even if it meant taking his private jet home, he would make sure he was there to share a candlelit dinner with me.

If he promised to take Tullio and me on an island vacation, he would sacrifice his own rest to finish his work ahead of schedule rather than break his word.

Every year on my birthday, Niccolo would clear his entire schedule just to spend the day with me. And whenever I worried that I was keeping him from his work, he would take my hand and press it against his chest. "In here, there's nothing more important than you."

Third-Person POVMarta's sobs stopped abruptly. She struggled to prop herself up in bed. "Niccolo, don't you remember? Three months ago, on the night of the celebration, you got drunk. I was the one who took you back to your room. You held me so tightly and wouldn't let go...""Serena always made sure I had something to prevent a hangover before I went drinking. I wasn't drunk at all!"Niccolo cut her off. He pulled out his phone and played the hotel's security footage. "From the moment you entered my room to the moment you left, exactly 2 minutes and 30 seconds passed. Are you seriously claiming that's when you got pregnant?"Marta opened her mouth, but not a single word came out.Niccolo then produced another document and handed it to Vittoria. "This is what the private investigator just uncovered. For the past six months, Marta has been making frequent trips to a bar downtown to meet the same man. He's the illegitimate son of the Vitale family."Vittoria was so furious that he

The two of them seemed to have made up their minds. Neither was willing to leave Montelune.Niccolo began bringing Tullio to my office every day. Like clockwork, he'd be waiting outside every morning with a bouquet of flowers in his hands.Ingrid once jokingly asked if I wanted her to call security. I shook my head. Each time, I simply pushed the flowers back into Tullio's arms, refusing to accept them.Tullio had become much better behaved, too. He no longer threw tantrums or made a scene. Instead, he quietly followed Niccolo around every day, looking like an abandoned puppy.A few times, when I was working on sketches at a cafe, he'd sit beside me reading a book, staying there for the entire afternoon. Each time, I forced myself to look away.Once the trust in a relationship was broken, there was no putting it back together, whether it was between family members or lovers.Eventually, after days of this painful stalemate, Niccolo finally reached his breaking point. One evening

Third-Person POVMarta froze. Her voice tightened as she hurriedly waved her hands in protest. "I only said those things because I couldn't bear to see him crying like that. I was upset and wasn't thinking straight. You know how much I care about Tullio…""Get out."Niccolo didn't bother listening to her excuses."From now on, Marta, you're not allowed anywhere near Tullio. You're also forbidden from entering the main house, and when Serena returns, I don't want you anywhere near her either."Marta's eyes widened. She was so shocked that she forgot to keep up her helpless act. "Niccolo, you're throwing me out?"Have you forgotten who stood up for you when you got scolded as a child? Have you forgotten who stayed by your bedside the night you were shot? What has Serena ever done for you besides cry and throw tantrums?"At that moment, the last trace of affection Niccolo held for his childhood friend vanished. He pressed the intercom. "Show her out."The butler arrived shortly a

Serena's POVBefore leaving, I'd sent my resume to several leading fashion companies in Montelune. My portfolio quickly caught the attention of one of them, and they offered me a position, even promising to provide accommodation in the city.By my third week in Montelune, I was gradually settling into my new life. Just when I thought I'd finally managed to leave the past behind, Tullio suddenly called.I stared at his name flashing across the screen, unable to stop the dull ache in my chest. After a long hesitation, I finally answered. "What's wrong, Tullio? Is there something you need this late at night?"Tullio spoke as though he were giving me an order. "My school's open house is the day after tomorrow. I want you to come with me."For a moment, I almost agreed. He'd been distant from me for so long that even the slightest effort on his part to reach out used to be enough to melt my heart. I'd forgive him for everything and agree to whatever he wanted without a second thought.

Serena's POVMost of them were from Niccolo."Serena, where are you?""What's the meaning of those divorce papers? I never agreed to a divorce.""Answer your phone. Tullio keeps asking for you.""And here I thought you'd finally learned to be reasonable. Serena, you've really disappointed me."I stared at the word "disappointed" and suddenly found the whole thing laughable.Apparently, even with the divorce papers right in front of him, Niccolo still thought I was just throwing another tantrum.Anger flared up inside me, and I decided to ignore his messages. I put my phone away and walked out of the airport.A cold gust of wind hit me, and I instinctively pulled my coat tighter around myself. The last time I'd visited Montelune, I'd been with Niccolo. It had been summer then. We'd taken a boat ride along the River Selune, watching the setting sun turn the city's famous tower golden as the grand cathedral rose in the distance. Now, when I returned, it was already late autumn.

Serena's POVMy phone buzzed. A message had arrived from Vittoria. It read, "The divorce has been finalized. Tullio will remain with the family as its heir. You'll receive 30 million dollars in compensation. Leave as soon as possible."I replied with a simple, "Okay."Then I smiled and took the camera from the butler. "I never said no. Here, I'll take the picture for you. Go on, get into position."In truth, earlier that morning, I'd signed the divorce papers Vittoria had prepared long before. I'd decided to give up on the marriage that had caused me so much pain, along with the son who no longer loved me.The only reason I'd stayed until now was that I'd wanted to spend a little more time with Tullio on his birthday. After all, I probably wouldn't be there to celebrate any of his future birthdays. But now it seemed even that gesture had been unnecessary.Niccolo gave me a surprised glance before nodding. With Niccolo and Marta holding Tullio between them, my son beamed happily
