CHAPTER EIGHT

FIVE MINUTES

AURORA

The new door arrived before lunch.

Not a new lock.

Not another deadbolt.

An entire door.

Apparently Aleksandr hadn’t been exaggerating when he said steel frame.

Four men carried it upstairs.

Two more followed with tools.

Aleksandr stood in the hallway watching them like he expected someone to steal me through the opening while they worked.

I stayed inside.

Mostly because he’d told me to.

Partly because Nikolai was downstairs.

And after what happened that mornin

Absolutely. Picking up the instant the gunshot explodes above the underground room, with the envelope still in Aurora’s hand.CHAPTER THIRTY-SIXTO MY DAUGHTERSAURORAThe gunshot exploded above us.Everything changed.Aleksandr moved before the echo died. One second he stood beside me.The next, his body slammed into mine and drove me down behind the metal table.“Aurora!”Another shot. Then another.Pop.Pop.Not close together. Not wild.Controlled.Outside.Avery grabbed Whitney and pulled her behind the concrete wall beside the stairs.Viktor drew his weapon.Anya dropped beside the cabinet. The underground room that had felt like a grave full of secrets seconds ago became something else entirely.A bunker.A trap.“Report,” Aleksandr snapped. His hand pressed against the back of my head. His body covered mine. The radio on Avery’s vest crackled.Static.Then—“Contact north side!”More gunfire erupted overhead.Whitney flinched.Avery shoved her farther behind him.“How many?”“

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVETHE KEYAURORAI woke up warm. That was the first thing I noticed. The second was that I couldn’t move.Something heavy was wrapped around my waist.Another something was beneath my head. And there was a leg tangled with mine.I opened my eyes.Black shirt.Tattooed arm.Very large hand resting across my stomach.Aleksandr.Memories returned slowly. The palace.Nikolai.Mikhail’s phone call. The birth certificate. The key.Elias.And then—I love you, Aurora. My heart did something embarrassing.I smiled. Then immediately stopped smiling because Aleksandr’s arm tightened.“You awake.”His voice was rough with sleep.I looked up.His eyes were still closed.“How do you know?”“You move.”“I barely moved.”“You breathe different.”I stared.“That’s creepy.”“Yes.”“You admit it?”“Yes.”I smiled again. His eyes opened.Dark.Sleepy.Beautiful.I had never seen him like this. Not alert. Not angry. Not watching doors. His hair had come loose during the night and spille

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOURTHREE WORDSAURORAAleksandr did not take me to my room.I realized that approximately halfway up the palace staircase.“My room is the other way.”“I know.”I looked at the back of his head.“Then where are we going?”“Somewhere secure.”I stopped. He took another step before realizing I was no longer following. Our hands stretched between us.He turned.“Aurora.”“You promised.”“What?”“No more deciding where I go without telling me.”His expression changed.Behind us, Whitney made a tiny sound.I looked over Aleksandr’s shoulder. She and Avery were three steps below us.Anya and Viktor were farther down.Everyone had stopped.Wonderful.An audience.Aleksandr looked down at our joined hands. Then back at me.“You are right.”I blinked. That was easy.Too easy.“What?”“You are right.”I stared.“Did you hit your head?”Viktor laughed.Aleksandr glared over his shoulder.“No.”I looked at Aleksandr again.“Then where are we going?”“The royal family wing.”“Why?

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREELESS THAN AN HOURALEKSANDRMy brother was coming.I had known Nikolai my entire life.I knew how he thought. How he planned. How he punished. How he lied. And most importantly—I knew what happened when somebody took something from him that he believed belonged to him.He became reckless. Not stupid.Nikolai Volkov was never stupid. But angry. And angry men made mistakes.Tonight, I needed my brother to make one.Avery stood beside me in the eastern security building, staring at three monitors displaying different sections of Isla’s coastline. He had changed since leaving palace. The man who kissed Whitney goodbye was gone. This Avery Cole was cold.Controlled.Dangerous.I understood him better this way.“Aircraft crossed into Isla airspace eight minutes ago,” one of his men said.“Identification?” Avery asked.“Nothing legitimate.”“Tail number?”“False.”“Origin?”“Last confirmed radar contact puts it coming from the northwest.”I looked at screen.“Nikolai.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWODO YOU LOVE HIM?AURORA“Start with the giant Russian carrying you around my foyer.”I laughed.I couldn’t help it.Whitney had been waiting until we were safely behind the closed doors of one of the palace sitting rooms.Apparently that was as long as her patience lasted. The room was supposed to be private. As private as anything could be with Isla guards stationed outside both doors, Avery’s men walking the corridors, and half the palace being transformed into something that looked increasingly like a military compound.Whitney had dismissed two members of the staff.Closed the doors.Pulled me toward the enormous cream-colored sofa. Then immediately started interrogating me.“Aleksandr?” I asked innocently.“No. The other giant Russian who lifted you off the floor because you called him sir.”“There were several Russians in the foyer.”“Aurora.”I smiled. She stared.I tried not to laugh.Failed.Whitney grabbed a pillow and hit me with it.“Ow!”“You deserved t

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONEI WARNED YOUAURORAThree hours. That was how long we supposedly had before Nikolai reached Isla.Maybe less.Nobody seemed interested in testing the accuracy of the estimate. The moment Avery ended the call, everything changed. The bedroom where Whitney and I had just discovered we were sisters stopped feeling like a place filled with childhood memories. It became a command center.Phones appeared.Weapons appeared.Men started talking over one another.Avery was already issuing orders before I fully understood what was happening.“Lock down the palace.”Whitney looked at him.“Avery—”“Every entrance. Every service road. Nobody gets inside without being cleared.”“This is Isla. We have our own security.”“I know.”“Then stop acting like you own the island.”Avery looked at her.“I don’t need to own it to keep you alive.”Whitney opened her mouth.Closed it.I looked between them.Interesting.Very interesting.Avery turned toward one of his men.“I want two vehicl
