Chapter 1

Author: Bright Hall
My wedding was interrupted during the exchanging of rings by a phone call.

On the other end, Janet Singer was choking with tears, "Sean, it hurts so much… I don't know what to do anymore! I can't take it anymore! I just want everything to end…"

My fingers clenched on my own crinoline, watching as Sean Boswell's face turned pale instantly.

"Just calm down! I'll be right there, just wait for me…"

And with those words, he rushed off the stage, knocking the rings off the box in the priest's hands.

Both rings fell, rolling off to god-knows-where, leaving the crowd in shock.

"Sean—"

I promptly went up to grab Sean's arm, only for him to shake me off violently, knocking me to the floor.

There was a brief flicker of hesitation when he turned and saw that it was me, but he didn't stop, "Anna, let's put our wedding on hold. Janet's in trouble—I have to get to her…"

I watched as he strode off into the distance, my heart seized by an invisible hand, hurting me so much I suffocated.

"Sean!"

I screamed his name, my tears welling up in my eyes before I knew it. "We're done if you leave now! I'll never forgive you… I want a divorce!"

Sean paused and turned towards me, frowning, "Janet's depressed—this is serious, and not the time for your antics!"

I felt a rush of blood up my brain at his response.

Ever since Janet returned to this country, she was either sick or suicidal on days that mattered to us.

But Sean couldn't seem to tell, and would consistently leave me for Janet on every occasion.

Even now—on the day of our wedding, he wouldn't stay for my sake.

Meanwhile, the camera shutters of the journalists in the wedding hall were snapping audibly, while I seemed to hear the guests' murmurs right beside my ears.

The priest was left holding the empty box and staring at me awkwardly.

My mother-in-law glared at me coldly, blaming me for being unreasonable and demanding divorce so lightly, embarrassing her family.

My own mother pinched my arm forcefully, while flashing an apologetic smile at my in-laws.

My stepfather snorted coolly, scoffing at me for being an embarrassment before dragging my mother out of the wedding hall.

And having had their entertainment, the guests dispersed, not forgetting to shoot me sympathetic looks before they left.

Thunder clapped from the horizon, soon followed by a downpour. I was still wondering how things turned out like this.

The wedding hall was halfway up a hill.

I was still in my wedding gown, and when the rain stopped, I headed down.

The skies were already dark.

Sean never texted or called me even now, and while my mom did call, she blamed me for my defiance against him and his family, and making a scene.

"Thank goodness you're pregnant with a child of the Boswell family," she kept droning on. "Once Sean comes back, you must apologize to him right away. Otherwise, Janet Singer might become his wife instead—"

Weary, I hung up, miserable inside.

I believed Sean loved me—even if my father abandoned me, my mother didn't love me and my stepfather despised me.

But now, I realized that he didn't seem to love me either.

Even though he was the one who wooed me so long, declaring his love, and vowing to love and stay with me forever.

Maybe I shouldn't have taken his vows too seriously because hearts could change easily.

Sean grabbed my wrist as he groaned, "Anna, it's all my fault—I have given you grief over Janet, for blaming you … she deceived me. Can't I still take care of you from now on? Let things go back the way it was?"His hand scalded my wrist—it was always comfortable late autumn, but all I felt now was disgust."Have you forgotten?"I looked up at him as I pried his hand off. "I've told you that day at the hospital—I really want a divorce. I don't love you anymore."With those words, I pulled out the divorce papers from my bag.Sean's mother hunted me down the day after the press conference, calling me vile and intent on ruining her family no matter what the cost.Even as she told me that I would never get to marry into the Boswells, she coerced me into signing these papers. She really had no idea that it was exactly what I wanted."Do you understand now?"I smiled at the look of undisguised shock on his face. "Thanks to your parents, there's nothing tying us together at all now."

Sean scowled slightly, and was ready to speak up to stop the journalists, but I held up a hand.Smiling faintly, I told everyone beneath the stage, "I've noted down everyone's questions—but before I begin, allow me to show everyone a couple of videos."As I finished, the two videos that I received at the hospital played on the projector screen behind me—it was certainly a sensational sight. And amidst the endless camera flashes and the crowd's murmurs, I took out a stack of photos and threw it beneath the stage. It wasn't just photos of Janet and Sean kissing—but also of Janet getting it on with other unknown men. After all, I had Janet thoroughly investigated before I was going to leave the country, and found not just her cheating, but also her faking her depression.Naturally, there was also the proof of her hiring thugs who had kidnapped me. "If everyone believes that I married Sean Boswell for money—that I am the other woman, then I have a question in return."And having d

I simply shook my head and left. However, Sean kept coming over the next few days, showing up punctually even though I refused him entry.Even when Janet called saying that she missed him, he simply said no.As the days passed and the visits continued, Janet finally broke. The woman who ruined my life as soon as she returned to the country finally showed her face, her makeup bewitching and her clothing skimpy. As soon as Sean saw her, he promptly took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders. "It's autumn—don't you know you should be wearing layers?""I'm not cold," Janet shook her head, but she was hugging tightly on Sean's arm.She then turned towards me with a doleful look, saying, "I just want to apologize to Anna for dragging you out of your wedding. It's my fault—""It was an emergency—you wouldn't have time to think," Sean cut her short, smiling sympathetically. "Don't say such things anymore."I laughed right then, if a little abruptly.Sean shot me a glare, read

I didn't respond in a hurry, instead calling my mother first—perhaps even I never noticed that I was still holding out hope for her. However, she was immediately snapping at me, "Have you gone mad?! Why did you tell Sean you were kidnapped?! Let's see how you'd marry him when he knows how those scum defiled you!"I freed my clenched knuckle right then. "Whoever said I was defiled?""You still have the cheek to mention that?" She bellowed at me. "You refused to head straight home on your wedding night, and let some men kidnap you! If word gets out, people would—""Stop it, Mom!" Helen suddenly snapped over the phone. She was panting—she seemed to have run there. "You call yourself a mother? What did Anna do to you, that you have to hurt—""Helen," I called her name gently. There was a brief silence, and Helen's voice was tearful, "I'm sorry, Anna…"I remembered then.I was eight when Helen was born. She was a saving grace for my mom, finally allowing her to hold her head high w

Suddenly, I felt a warm embrace, "It's me, Anna! You're alright now… You're alright now…"Still, even as Helen held me and comforted me repeatedly, I suddenly remembered."The voice recorder, Helen! It's in my bag!" I cried, seizing her as it struck me.Scarface did mention a name—a certain Ms. Singer.-In the end, Sean never returned for dinner that day, though I remained unaffected anyway. When I eventually went back to work after getting discharged, everyone was sneaking uncomfortable looks at me as soon as I entered the office. One of the colleagues who never liked me scoffed, "Oh, if it isn't the VVIP. And here I thought you won't work with us commoners once you marry rich."I ignored her and headed straight to my superior's office, only to be told immediately that I was fired. He appeared apologetic too, sighing, "Anna, I know you're a good employee, but I'm really sorry—we just can't afford to mess with Boswell Trading."I remained silent as I returned to my desk to p

Sean said nothing, but soon stubbornly took my hand in his. "Are you still upset?" He asked. "Fine, I know you're hurting, but can you please be reasonable? We're still young—we can have more children in the future."As he finished, he pulled out a gift box and opened it, revealing a diamond ring that still had a price tag on it.Even so, Sean took my hand and slowly slid it on my ring finger, a are-you-happy-now look plastered all over his face. "Try to be understanding, Janet's heavily depressed—I also bought you a new ring since that wedding ring was lost. Anything my wife deserves, I will give to you without exception. Be good now."I stayed silent as I kept my eyes fixed on his face. However, I couldn't find anything familiar despite searching for a long while.Even now, I used to remember how he would cook for me whenever I got upset. He would patiently ask and understand what had he done wrong, even taking me out shopping for an entire day just to pick something I like
