The living room was modest and homely, the type of environment to place anyone at ease but Ramon Garcia was a far cry from being at ease.

He paced the small confines of the living room, anxiety twisting his gut and worry filling his heart as he watched his sister.

The eleven-year-old lay on the couch, her eyes barely open. The sunlight phased through the closed curtains and cast a hue on her pale skin that made her appear even more sickly.

He watched her stifle a groan.

Theresa did not want him to know she was in pain but he knew better and had to force his tears to stay at bay.

The poor girl was going through what no child ever should.

Sometimes he feared he would never get to see her play and boss him around.

Loss had been a familiar companion to him but he knew losing his sister would kill him.

She was restless but too tired to even toss and turn.

The burden that came with the situation felt particularly unbearable today as he stared at the small pile of medical bills on the dining table.

Theresa needed surgery and there was only so much a carpenter could afford, the bank would not even grant him a loan.

It was the kind of money that they were certain he could not repay no matter he assured them that he could.

The last time he was at the bank he was escorted out by security for causing a scene.

He cried in his car for a good ten minutes afterward.

The clock was ticking and the doctors had given him a grim ultimatum. If he could not afford the surgery, he would have to afford to bury his sister.

The last member of his family.

His heart clenched painfully as he knelt next to his sister, brushing a wet strand of hair off her forehead.

She looked just like their mother but had their father’s eyes.

He wished his parents were here. It would have been easier.

“Hey, T,” he whispered, forcing a smile, though it felt brittle against the backdrop of his fears. “How are you feeling chica?”

She opened her eyes slowly and forced a smile of her own. Ramon could picture the beautiful woman she’d grow into someday.

He would not let her die. She had too much to live for.

“I’m good, Hermano,” she murmured, her voice filled with weariness, “I just feel a little tired”

“Theresa…..”

She placed a comforting hand on his face and smiled.

“I’m fine. It’s your terrible cooking that’s making me this way”

Ramon chuckled. Even in pain she still tried to make him smile. He had to look away to wipe a stray tear.

“My cooking isn’t that bad, chica”

“Yes, it is. You need a girlfriend”

“What if i like boys?”

“As long as he cooks better than you I’ll take it”

He fought back the swell of emotion. He had to be strong for her.

“I’m going to take care of you, prometo,” he vowed, squeezing her hand gently, wishing he could take the burden away.

“Do you think I’ll see mama and papa when I get to heaven?”

The thought of her death and hearing her expect to die destroyed whatever strength he was holding on to.

“You stop that! You stop saying that right now!” His eyes began to flood, “I will not bury you! You hear me? I won’t let anything happen to you. I’ll save you”

“Sé que lo harás,” she kissed him on the cheek, “I see you trying, Ramon. Gracias”

Ramon wrapped his arms around her and cried.

He felt powerless—a feeling he loathed.

The medicine costs had mounted and desperation gnawed at him. He had never felt this way before.

Suddenly he was willing to make choices he never thought he would.

He had always been a honest man that took pride in his morals but he was willing to toss that moral compass in the ocean.

No morals compared to his sister’s life.

Hannah sat at the backseat of the large car with Ramon and Theresa. The little girl lay her head on her on her brother's chest and closed her eyes. Gina and her mother had been kind enough to give them a ride back home. Apparently the doctor had given Theresa permission to be taken back home but that was the story that Ramon had told them but she doubted that was the whole truth. His demeanour had been off and she was simply waiting for them to get home before she pressed him about it. The car ride was fairly quiet except for the small chatter from Gina and Amanda. Hannah also tried her best to join in on the light hearted conversation as Ramon did not look like he was in any mood to converse. "How's the little angel doing back there?" Amanda asked and Hannah looked to Theresa. "She's asleep" Hannah replied and watched as Ramon gently stroked his sister's hair. "She's had a long week, the poor child," Amanda commented, "We'll be at the house soon enough and she will get to

Isabelle had gotten back home and much to her relief, her mother and Brian had packed and were just about ready to leave. Her son was the most excited to meet her as soon as she had walked through the door. "Hey, Mom" Brian ran into his mother's ever welcoming embrace and she kissed the top of his head affectionately. She was glad that he was no longer upset at her. It felt nice to have her boy back. "Hey, baby. Someone's happy" "Are you kidding? We finally get to move in with dad and he said that my room was going to blow my mind" "I'm sure that he did" Isabelle knew Adrian and she was certain that he was willing to go over and beyond to make up for all the time lost. She was glad that her dream of watching her son grow up and not have to worry about the next meal had come true. "How did he take it?" Rosie asked as she came up to Isabelle. "Not too well," Isabelle replied, "But, he'll be fine in the long run. He's really no saint himself" "Mom broke up with her douchebag

Pascal looked at Isabelle through the rear view mirror of the car and couldn't help but smile. Isabelle had been a bit under the weather for a few days and all of a sudden, she seemed to be glowing. She was happy and it showed effortlessly. "Pardon me, Madam," he began, "Permit to say that you have been in the best of moods these past few days and you even seem to glow" Isabelle laughed loudly. It was a sound that Pascal had not heard before. It sounded genuine. "Well, love will do that to you, Pascal" He smiled. "Love, of course. Such a beautiful feeling I have to admit" "Have you ever been in love, Pascal?" she asked. Pascal chuckled and nodded. "I have fallen in love before." "What was she like?" "She was the most beautiful woman that I had ever laid my eyes on. She was one mean cookie too and had all the guys scared to get near her and she even punched me in the face once" Isabelle burst out laughing. "She punched you in the face?" "She thought I was one of the men

It made her believe that she might actually lose her daughter."I am so sorry, Isabelle," she was weeping at this point, "I know that I messed up but please you can't kick me out like this. I am your mother and I love you""Save it please. I am aware that you're my mother and that's the reason that I sent you thirty

Isabelle's grip on the steering wheel tightened as she struggled to come to terms with all the things that she had been thrown at over the past three days. Adrian coming into her life through Theodore after a decade, the things that he had said to her and the truth about her mother and how she had destroyed her love and family. She was struggling to cry. She did not need Brian to watch her cry. "Mom," he called to her, "Why didn't grandma Rosie come with us?" Isabelle glanced at her son seated at the passenger side of the car and managed a small smile. "She's going to take a taxi home and we're going to go see someone very important" "Someone important?" Isabelle nodded. "Yes. I think it's someone that you would be very happy to meet" "Shouldn't we go home so I can change first" "Even if you were dressed in old rags, it still wouldn't matter" Brian said nothing and turned his gaze to the window. Isabelle hated that he had still not spoken to her properly after
