Thirty-six hours.

That was how long they had before Robert's charter left for Zurich. Once he was in the air — once he crossed into a jurisdiction that would take months to navigate legally and had money enough to stay hidden inside it indefinitely — the hard drive in Cameron's hands became significantly less useful.

Nyla laid it out on the drive back to Cameron's building. Flat. Practical. No panic in it, just the shape of the problem and the shape of the time they had.

Cameron listened withou

Not a text. A call. The same number she had memorised the way you memorise something you've looked at a hundred times in the dark. But this time it was ringing. Actually ringing. A call — as if whatever boundary had existed between the voice on the other side and the act of speaking out loud had finally, irreversibly, dissolved. She looked at the screen. She picked up.She said nothing. She waited. One second. Two.Then a voice.A voice she had not heard in twenty-three years. A voice she had heard in the recordings her father had kept — home videos, a handful of phone messages he had never been able to delete — until she stopped letting herself listen to them because the grief of it was a door she couldn't afford to keep opening.A voice she had heard in her own voice, sometimes, in certain registers and certain silences. The inheritance of sound that children carry without knowing it."Nyla."One word.Just her name. Said the way only one person had ever said it — not as a greeting,

The emergency meeting at Reeves's field office began at ten that night.Seven people in a conference room designed for four — Reeves at the head, her second-in-command beside her, Patricia Osei with a tablet and three open windows on it, Cameron, Nyla, Dominique via secure video link on a laptop at the end of the table, and a young federal attorney named Caldwell who had been pulled from whatever he was doing before dinner and still looked like it.Reeves laid it out without ceremony.Robert's legal team had filed an emergency motion challenging Nyla's status as a cooperating evidence source. The argument was technical and precise: the pending SEC fraud complaint, even though it had since been withdrawn, had created a window during which Nyla could be characterised as operating under legal jeopardy when she facilitated the submission of evidence. The motion argued this created a conflict of interest that tainted the entire submission chain."It's a stretch," Patricia said. "A signific

She chose a restaurant she had never been to.No history with it, no associations, no table she had sat at before with anyone who mattered. A clean space, which gave the evening no advantage except hers. She confirmed the booking under a name Tobias provided, arrived twenty minutes early with Cameron to establish the room, and let Tobias sweep for devices from the street while she reviewed the exits. She had become very good at this over the past year. The preparation. The mapping. The refusal to walk into any space without understanding it first. At seven-fifteen, Victor Harmon arrived. He came alone. No lawyers, no security, no assistant. Just the man — unhurried, well-dressed, moving through the restaurant with the ease of someone for whom every room was already familiar. He found their table without needing to look for it. He sat down without being asked."Ms Harper," he said. "Mr Price." He acknowledged Cameron with a brief nod — not dismissive, just efficient. A man who noticed

She did not reply to Victor Harmon's message that day.She let it sit on her phone like a stone at the bottom of a clear pool — visible, present, heavy in a way that required no movement to be felt. She went about the hours. She spoke with Patricia Osei about the restored access to Harper Industries and the formal dismissal of the SEC complaint. She spoke with Reeves about Robert's bail conditions and the parallel evidentiary package being built around Dominique's server. She called the hospital to check on Elena's recovery and was told, by a nurse who had learned her name by now, that Elena had eaten a full meal and complained about the television selection, which the nurse said were both very good signs. She did not reply to Harmon. The next morning, a physical letter arrived at Cameron's building. Not a message. Not an email. A letter, handwritten on cream-coloured stationery, delivered by a private courier at nine in the morning. The building concierge brought it up personally, wi

They drove back to the city in the early morning.Cameron drove. His side was bandaged and his shoulder from the night before was bandaged and she thought, looking at him in the grey dawn light, that he looked like someone who had been in a war. Not dramatically. Just — worn. The specific texture of a person who has absorbed a great deal in a short time and is managing it with the same steady competence they apply to everything else. She watched the road. She thought about Eric. She let herself think about him properly — not the Eric of the last year, the one who had become Robert's instrument, but the one before that. The one she had said yes to. The one who had made her laugh in the first year. The one who had been, she understood now, always somewhat hollow at the centre — always looking outward for the thing that would make him feel like enough. She did not grieve that person the way you grieve someone you have lost. She grieved him the way you grieve someone you had already been

Subject is down meant wounded, not dead. Not yet.The deputies had found Eric on the cabin floor — a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the side, which the paramedics who arrived twelve minutes later described as serious but survivable if they moved quickly. They moved quickly. The county hospital was forty miles south and the air ambulance made it in eighteen minutes and Eric went directly into surgery while Nyla and Cameron followed by road in the second ambulance — Cameron refusing, with polite finality, to be transported separately from the situation. The hospital was small and clean and smelled of pine sap and antiseptic in a ratio that suggested it served a community that spent a lot of time outdoors doing things that sometimes went wrong. They waited.Cameron's side wound was treated in an examination room while they waited for news on Eric. A different doctor this time, younger, who worked with brisk efficiency and told Cameron in a tone that suggested she said this often that he

Nyla sat in her father's study the morning after discovering Thomas had fled with two hundred million dollars. Grace stood by the window looking exhausted. James paced back and forth, his phone pressed to his ear, talking to lawyers who kept saying the same useless things. When he finally hung up,

Nyla called Cameron and told him they needed to talk. In person. Privately. He suggested his office. She said no. Too formal. Too many people around. They agreed to meet at a small coffee shop in a quiet neighborhood where nobody would recognize them.Nyla arrived first. Ordered tea she did not dri
