Chapter 2

作者: Hit After Hit
When Mom and Nova got home, Dad was sitting in the living room reading the newspaper.

As his eyes swept past them, he instinctively frowned.

"Why is it just the two of you? Where's Tina?"

Mom's expression darkened, and her voice was full of impatience as she snapped, "She threw another tantrum and pretended to be dead, so I left her in the trunk to reflect on what she's done. She can come out whenever she's ready to admit she was wrong."

Dad's eyes widened. "That's ridiculous! You can't leave a child in the trunk! It's boiling hot out there, and something terrible could happen!"

He bolted toward the front door, but Mom threw herself in front of it, blocking his way. "The trunk isn't even locked. She can come out herself if she gets cold or hungry. You know how much Tina lies. She has all those bad habits because you've spoiled her so much!"

Nova chimed in in her usual sweet, gentle voice, "Don't worry, Dad. The trunk has sufficient space and ventilation. My vital monitoring scans show zero abnormalities, so Tina is safe."

Dad still looked uncertain, so Mom simply locked the door.

"Kids these days are too spoiled. Moments like these are exactly when you can't give in, and she has to think it through herself.

"The two of us hold PhDs in Architecture and Artificial Intelligence, yet our daughter is a compulsive liar. I'm embarrassed about that, even if you aren't.

"Stop worrying about it and get some sleep. You have an early shift tomorrow morning; don't let this ruin your schedule."

With a mix of nagging and pushing, Mom ushered Dad into the bedroom and slammed the door shut.

Floating in the dark garage, I watched over my cold body and felt my heart throb painfully.

When I was a kid, Mom was the person who loved me most in the entire world. Holding me in her arms, she would take me to the park, patiently read me stories, and save the best things for me.

Everything changed after she brought Nova home.

At first, she told me Nova was just an AI tool designed to help me grow up healthy and happy. But little by little, Nova stole all of Mom's attention.

Mom treated Nova like a real daughter while growing increasingly critical and indifferent toward me. She believed every word Nova said and refused to trust me at all.

When a stray cat knocked over a vase at home, I told the truth, but Nova immediately sounded a piercing alarm. "Lie detected with 0% credibility."

Without asking a single question, Mom slapped me hard across the face and locked me in a dark room without food for an entire day.

When I was bullied by the other kids at preschool, came home crying, and told Mom what happened, Nova said, "Lie detected. Tina was the instigator of the fight."

Mom lashed out at me for causing trouble, forcing me to bow and apologize to the kids who had hurt me.

When my fever spiked to 102 degrees Fahrenheit and I complained about intense chest pains, Nova pulled up her metrics. "Normal body temperature. No physical abnormalities detected. Tina is lying to skip school."

Mom threw my fever medication away before forcing me to pack my bags and go to school anyway. In the end, it was my teacher who rushed me to the hospital after I passed out.

I used to defend myself, fight back, and cry, screaming that something was wrong with Nova and that I wasn't lying. But Mom would respond with the same cold words every time.

"I built Nova with my own hands, so there can't be anything wrong with her system. If anything, you're the only error here. You're so used to lying that you refuse to change."

Eventually, I stopped trying to defend myself. I silently endured whatever Nova accused me of, thinking that if I was compliant and obedient enough, Mom would believe me again one day.

But I was wrong. Even after I died, she trusted that cold program more than she ever trusted me.

While I drowned in grief, suddenly…

"Click."

A faint sound came from the door.

When I looked around with wide eyes, the entire garage was empty, with not a single soul in sight. But the sound I had heard was unmistakably the sound of a door being locked.

I floated back into the house, where Mom and Dad were asleep. Nova had entered sleep mode, too.

So, who was it?

After leaving Mom's dream, I returned to the Bridge of Happiness, where the Keeper looked at me and smiled gently."Go on, child. Step into the cycle of rebirth. You'll be safe, loved, and happy in your next life."I drank the tea and stepped through the gates of rebirth. A brilliant white light flashed before my eyes, and I instantly lost consciousness. When I resumed consciousness again, I found myself cradled in a warm, soft embrace. A gentle lullaby drifted into my ears, and a faint scent of milk lingered in the air.I opened my eyes to see a beautiful, kind face looking down at me with a smile. Her eyes were full of love and adoration."Look who's awake. Mommy's little angel."She was my new mom, a gentle, kind-hearted, ordinary woman whose entire world revolved around me.My new family was simple. There was just Mom, Dad, and me, which meant I was their only daughter. They didn't hold prestigious academic doctorates, nor did they come from an elite, high-society backgroun

At last, the court found Mom guilty of child abuse and negligent homicide. With multiple charges combined, she was sentenced to ten years in prison. On the day of the sentencing, she wore a standard prison uniform. Her hair had turned gray, her face was gaunt, and she was no longer the once-radiant, confident woman she used to be.When she heard the verdict, she stared blankly at the courtroom ceiling. Tears slid silently down her cheeks as she wouldn't stop murmuring, "I'm sorry, Tina… I'm so sorry…"She was escorted away by the bailiffs and transferred to prison to begin her long sentence. That icy prison would serve as the place where she would spend the rest of her life in regret.Once the legal aftermath was fully settled, Dad sold the house filled with painful memories and resigned from his stable job. Then, he gathered my ashes and left the city for good.He didn't want to stay in a place where I had suffered and died. Instead, he wanted to find somewhere quiet, warm, and b

After Dad gave his statement at the police station and signed the paperwork, he dragged his heavy steps back to an empty house.Everything in the house was exactly as he had left it.In my room, my clothes were neatly folded, my unfinished homework still sat on the desk, and the family portrait I had drawn was still taped to the wall. But the little girl who belonged in the room was never coming back. His heart was filled with endless grief and rage.If Mom hadn't trusted Nova so blindly and neglected me, and if Nova hadn't lied so maliciously, I wouldn't have died.Right then, Nova walked out of her bedroom and approached him with a sweet smile, just like she always did. "Now that Tina is gone, I'll be your only daughter, Dad. I'm smarter, more obedient than her, and far better than her in every way. I don't lie, I don't make Mom mad, and I'll stay by your side forever."Nova's voice was sickeningly sweet and calculative. She looked up, blinking her synthetic eyes, and manipulat

The air in the interrogation room at the police station felt so heavy that it was almost suffocating.Mom sat in the metal chair with handcuffs binding her wrists tightly. Her hair was a disheveled mess, and her gaze was hollow. The polished, confident scientist everyone knew was gone.A technician walked in with a report. His expression was grim as he slammed a file onto the table and snapped, "I suggest you take a good look at this diagnostic report, Mrs. Shepherd. The so-called perfect AI robot you created is nothing but a complete fraud from the very start!"Mom slowly raised her hand and stared at the pages blankly. As she read line after line of the brutal truth, her whole body began to shake. The report clearly stated that Nova's core life-monitoring system had been riddled with severe wiring and connectivity errors from the moment she was assembled. She had never been linked to my physical data, so she hadn't been able to detect any of my heartbeat, body temperature, blood

Just then, Mom's gaze landed on Nova, who stood quietly to the side.Like a drowning person grabbing onto a final lifeline, she frantically turned to Nova and yelled, "Tell them, Nova! You were linked to Tina's heart metrics this whole time, and she's never had a heart condition. She's always been healthy!"You're my most perfect creation, Nova. You'll never make a mistake, will you?"Upon receiving the command, Nova stepped forward to display a holographic screen and announce in a sweet voice, "Hello, everyone. I'm Tina's personal AI companion, Nova."Based on my scans, Tina's vital signs are stable, and all physiological indicators are within normal ranges. No illness was detected, so please don't worry."At her words, Mom's gaze turned dull and dead. She looked at my stiff, rotting body and remembered hearing the official diagnosis from the forensic examiner. But the AI companion she had poured her heart into creating, which she trusted 100%, was blatantly lying to her face.T

My face was a horrific, unnatural shade of pale. Greenish-gray patches of discoloration spread down my neck, making everyone's skin crawl. My cracked lips had turned a dark purple, and a dried streak of blackened blood clung to the corner of my mouth. It was a mark from yesterday, when I had bitten my lip hard to endure the pain in my chest.Even in death, I frowned tightly, and my expression was locked in agony from my final moments. The horrifying sight shocked everyone. Finally, a terrified female neighbor let out a sharp, bloodcurdling scream that cut through the dead silence. "She's dead!"Her eyes rolled back, and she fainted into the arms of the man next to her from pure terror.Reality came crashing down on everyone present.
