Chapter 4

Author: Laughing Monster
John thought I was going to call the police. Fury flashed across his face. He snatched my phone away and smashed it on the ground. He roared at me.

"Enough, Emma! How much more unreasonable can you be today? I've been good to you. You have everything you need, and you're Mrs. Garpin. What more do you want?"

What more did I want? I let out a bitter laugh and looked at John and Karen, enunciating each word clearly.

"I'm tired. I want a divorce. How about that?"

John didn't hesitate for a second. "That's impossible. Emma, I've clearly spoiled you too much. You've become this way because I let you. You even tried to slap Karen. You need to be taught a lesson today."

A flash of disappointment crossed Karen's eyes before she quickly covered it up. "John, I think you're right. Mrs. Garpin doesn't know how good she has it. She needs to be taught a lesson, or she'll forget her place."

She paused, as if something had just occurred to her. A smile spread across her face as she turned to John.

"John, didn't you tell me your family has an ice cellar? Why don't we let Mrs. Garpin cool down in there for a while? She won't die in there, and it'll teach her a good lesson."

That ice cellar was below freezing. If I went in there, I'd die for sure.

"No! I can't go in there. I'll die! John, you're insane!"

John didn't even glance at me. After hearing Karen's suggestion, he nodded immediately.

"Not a bad idea. Let's use the ice cellar. An hour should do it. She won't die, and maybe she'll finally learn."

No! I couldn't go in there! I reached out to grab John's clothes, but he dodged me with disgust written all over his face.

"Emma, just stay in there and behave. When you come out, I hope you'll stop being so jealous all the time. Then, you can continue being Mrs. Garpin."

I could ask Eloise for help. I looked at my daughter desperately, but she stared back at me coldly.

"You offended Ms. Linsell. You deserve to be locked up."

Panic seized me. I had to escape. I had to get out of here.

I forced my body toward the door. I hadn't taken more than a few steps when Eloise spotted me and cried out.

"Mom's trying to run away! Dad, go after her!"

John turned and saw me. Rage twisted his features. He ran over and yanked me back.

Karen watched the scene unfold and spoke up again. "John, if she won't cooperate, why don't we break her legs? Technology is so advanced now. We can get them fixed later. It won't cause any real problems."

She pulled out a golf club with a sweet smile and handed it to John. John looked at me and sighed as he took the club.

"Don't blame me for this, Emma. You brought this on yourself. Just be good and bear with it. It'll be over soon."

Shock flooded through me. I struggled and screamed.

"You're insane! John, if you break my legs, I'll hate you forever!"

He tied me up and swung the club at my knees. The pain was excruciating. It tore through me like knives stabbing into bone. The pain forced blood up my throat.

It hurt. It hurt so much.

However, it wasn't over. They dragged me to the ice cellar and threw me inside.

The moment the cellar door slammed shut, despair crashed over me. I pounded on the door desperately, begging them with everything I had left.

"Don't leave me alone in here! It hurts so much! It's so cold! I'm going to die!"

Only silence answered me. Was I really going to die here?

My breathing grew shallower with each passing second. Then, suddenly, the door opened.

Eloise rushed toward me, but I stepped back coldly."Eloise, your father and I are divorced. He has custody of you. I've already sent all the child support payments to him. I'm not your mother anymore."Silence fell over everyone. John's hands clenched into fists. His voice came out hoarse."Honey, are you abandoning our daughter and me?"Eloise hadn't expected me to be so resolute. Tears streamed down her face."Mom, I was wrong! I don't want Ms. Linsell anymore. She's not nice to me at all."After I left, Karen had tried to win Eloise over at first. Her attitude had seemed decent enough. However, after a few days, she dropped the act. She started treating Eloise dismissively and even showed her disgust."It's just a congenital heart condition. You're not dying. Do what I tell you to do."I found their behavior laughable now. They thought they could come crying back to me, act sweet, and I'd devotedly return to their side.I looked at them coldly and spoke deliberately. "We'r

When Karen saw that message, she was ecstatic. She couldn't wait to post online and brag."I'm pregnant! Hehehe. And he divorced his wife. I made it to the top!"Then, she took the ultrasound report to the office to find John.John looked surprised to see her. Assuming she'd come for money, his face turned cold."What are you doing here? A hundred thousand wasn't enough? I can give you more money. Just leave me alone."However, Karen looped her arm through John's with a bright smile. "John, this isn't about money. I'm here to give you a surprise."She pulled out the ultrasound report and beamed at him. "John, I'm pregnant. When are you going to marry me?"John's expression darkened instantly. He stared at her coldly. "What are you talking about? Pregnant?"Karen stroked her belly with a sweet smile. "That's right. I'm pregnant. You divorced Emma, right? You said she was boring and uptight. So, marry me. I promise you'll never be bored."She gazed at him intently, convinced she

I was the one who secretly gave Xander money so he could study abroad and pursue his dreams. Back then, he'd held that bank card in silence for a long time. Finally, he left me with just one sentence."Emma, I'll work hard to become someone you can rely on."I never imagined that years later, when we met again, I'd be in such a miserable state. After John returned home, he flew into a rage and smashed everything in sight. He refused to believe I would leave."Emma won't leave. It's impossible! We have a daughter together. She'd never leave Eloise."He let out a self-deprecating laugh. "She's a woman. She's obviously just jealous. She must still love me too much. Right now, I'm the only person she can depend on."Karen immediately offered gentle comfort. "It's alright, John. Don't be angry. Mrs. Garpin could never leave you."She leaned into his embrace as she spoke. John sighed as he looked at her. "You're right. How could she possibly leave me? Give her a few days. She'll defin

My eyes welled up with tears. I wanted to speak but didn't know where to begin. Finally, I just looked at him wearily."Xander, I don't want to see him anymore. I'm so tired. I'm just so tired."When Xander saw the exhaustion in my eyes, he didn't press further. He simply pulled the blanket up around me and spoke quietly. "Em, I'll always be here for you."He walked out of the hospital room and pulled out his phone to make a call."I want you to dig into John Garpin. Find out what the hell he did to put Em in this state. I want him to wish he were dead!"Back at the house, John had pulled up the security footage and discovered I'd left. When he saw me getting into another man's car, rage consumed him. He smashed the computer to pieces.Furious, he ordered people to track me down. He didn't even acknowledge Karen standing beside him.Eventually, he found out which hospital room I was in and rushed over. However, when he reached the door, the security guards stationed there blocke

A woman's startled voice rang out. It was Pauline Youngman, our housekeeper. She stared at me in shock."Mrs. Garpin! How did you end up in here? And you're covered in blood!"John had called her to prepare a candlelit dinner for Karen. She'd come to get the expensive ingredients stored down here.Ice crystals had formed on my eyelashes. My whole body trembled as Pauline pulled me out of the cellar. Her face was filled with worry. "Oh my goodness, I should tell Mr. Garpin. Let me get him down here."Her words snapped me back to alertness. I grabbed her arm desperately."No! You can't tell him. They'll kill me. Please, Pauline, just get me out of here. I can't stay."Pauline suddenly remembered the intimate scene she'd witnessed upstairs. Understanding dawned on her, and since I'd always treated her well, righteous indignation flashed across her face."Alright, ma'am. Don't worry. I'm here. I'll get you out of here safely."I borrowed her phone and dialed a number. The moment t
