Chapter 1

“It’s just a kidney donation. It won’t kill her. Let her donate one to Sophia, and we’ll call it even for Sophia saving her life.”

My oldest brother, Damon Blythe, spoke coldly from just outside the operating room.

I slowly opened my eyes to find my body lighter than ever.

Looking down, I was floating mid-air, looking down at myself on the operating table.

My body lay motionless on the operating table, eyes shut tight, blood soaking the sheets. There was a large incision across my waist.

Without meaning to, my spirit drifted out of the operating room.

Outside, my three brothers, who used to dote on me, were discussing me in disgust.

“If she hadn’t run off and gotten herself kidnapped by one of our family's enemies, Sophia wouldn’t have one kidney destroyed, and the other failing.” Matt Blythe, my second brother, said. His face bore no affection for me, only coldness.

“Exactly. Ava’s so selfish and impulsive. She knew her kidneys were the best match for Sophia, but she kept pretending to be sick just to avoid donating.”

My youngest brother, Chris Blythe, added.

I stared at them. Each word they said was like a needle stabbing straight into my heart.

I only had one kidney left! How could I possibly donate it to someone else?

Then, they used to call me their sensible little princess. Now, just because I wouldn’t give my last kidney, I’m unreasonable?

I was the one they spoiled like a princess my entire life!

However, ever since Sophia Foster came into the picture, I somehow have a “princess complex”.

“Alright, let’s hurry. Make sure the doctors get Ava’s kidney to Sophia. She’s still on the table waiting!” Damon ordered, carefully checking the sealed container that held my organ.

“Yeah, thanks for the reminder. Nothing matters more than Sophia’s health!”

“Sophia’s tough. Not like Ava, always dramatic, making us worry over nothing. She’s perfectly healthy but would act sick just to get attention. If she weren’t our little sister, I’d have stopped caring long ago.”

“Well said. If only Sophia were our real sister. Ava’s just so spoiled...”

Their voices faded as they walked down the hallway and out of the private hospital.

Tears slid silently down my cheeks, vanishing into thin air.

It had all started two days ago.

I’d been sitting alone on the porch in our backyard, enjoying the breeze. Out of nowhere, two strange men appeared, knocked me out, and dragged me away.

When I woke up, I saw my three brothers' furious faces before me.

“Why did you run off?” Damon scolded. “Do you know how much time and money we spent looking for you?”

“The worst part is that Sophia got hurt because of you. She took a knife meant for you!

“She lost a kidney saving your life. The least you can do is give her one of yours.”

I still had no clue what had happened, but panic began to rise in my chest. I pleaded with them.

“I’m not healthy enough to donate. Please, I’ll pay whatever it takes! I’ll find a matching donor for her, I swear. Let me repay her another way.”

Matt was furious at my excuse.

“You might not like Sophia and think she took our attention, but she saved your life. All we’re asking is for you to give her a kidney, and you’re refusing?”

Chris chimed in, too. “You have two kidneys. We’re just asking for one. Your match is perfect. Why are you being so selfish?”

I sobbed. “I can’t! I’ll die if I go through with the surgery!”

They stood there in silence.

That’s when Sophia, lying weakly on a hospital bed nearby, spoke up in a trembling voice.

“Don’t force her. It’s okay if Ava doesn’t want to do it. My life isn’t worth that much. She’s always been the one everyone cherished. I’m just a nobody. If I die, it’s fine.”

“What are you talking about?! You saved her life. No way we’re letting you die!”

They stared at me determinedly, despite all my begging, and dragged me into that operating room.

“Your sister became a shell of herself for you. Couldn’t you tell? She might have tried to hide it from you, but if any of you had cared just a little more, you would have seen it. She was already hanging on by a thread,” Sophia continued.“But what did you do? To please me, you removed everyone who could’ve helped her. You made her do the dirtiest, most exhausting tasks. She coughed up blood from the stress, and you still accused her of faking it for sympathy. Even the surgery to remove her kidney, you forced her into it. You are the ones who killed Ava!“Hahahahahahahaha!”Sophia burst into breathless laughter, drunk on revenge.“You! I’ll kill you!”Chris’s eyes were filled with murderous intent as he grabbed a surgical knife and lunged toward Sophia. The police rushed to stop him.“Don’t stop me! She killed my sister! I’m going to kill her!”“The truth will come to light. Justice will be served for those who’ve committed a crime,” an officer firmly intervened, his voice ste

Inside my bag, there wasn’t a single cent. Only a worn family photo, its curled edges frayed with time.In the photo, I was surrounded by my whole family, smiling so radiantly and innocently.Unknowingly, Damon’s face was already drenched with tears. I was the precious little princess, cherished by my family! My phone was still buzzing in his palm. When he looked down at the unlocked screen, what popped up was a string of vile messages. All of them were from Sophia.Stunned, Damon’s mouth dropped open. He entered the password from memory and unlocked the phone.Beyond the dozens of missed calls were message after message of photos and insults from Sophia. He scrolled through them, fury flaring brighter with every word.[Damon’s coming to take care of me tonight. He won’t be home!][The brothers got me so many gifts for my birthday. Chris even rented out an entire amusement park! I heard that was your birthday wish, too. Too bad no one ever made it happen for you.][So, how do

The doctor standing behind the police officer sighed and stepped forward to speak.“Let me explain. I’m not sure if you remember, but I was your attending physician five years ago.”Damon nodded in silence while Matt stared blankly at the corpse on the operating table.“You all suffered serious injuries back then, and no compatible organs were available. Ms. Blythe paid a fortune to bring in the world’s top medical team and donated her own organs to save you.”He gestured to Damon’s side. “The knife pierced you there, causing massive blood loss. If Ms. Blythe hadn't donated half her liver to you, you would have bled out and died.”Then he turned to Matt.“Your kidney was severely damaged after a rebar had pierced through half your body. Our team worked day and night for three days to transplant Ms. Blythe’s kidney into you.”Matt swayed, nearly fainting. “So you’re saying she already gave me one of her kidneys? Why didn’t she tell us when we asked her to donate one to Sophia?”

“How did that get in there? Isn’t this just some fake corpse Ava used to trick us?”Matt, enduring the stench, moved in for a closer look at the body. His eyes landed on a deep scar along the arm, and he froze. When I was ten, Matt took me to watch Damon in a fight. We didn’t expect to be discovered by the enemy. As the knife came down on Matt, I blocked it with my arm, leaving me with a deep scar.Matt had rushed me to the hospital, standing outside the emergency room all day and night until I woke up.He looked at me with red eyes and said, “Ava, you saved my life. From now on, I’ll protect you like my own!”Now, Matt slowly sank to his knees, his voice hoarse as he shouted, “Ava, come out! I’ve figured it out! This is just one of your tricks, right?”Clutching his head tightly with both hands, his anger dissolved into desperate pleading.“I give up. Come out, Ava! End this game already. Please, stop scaring me like this.”Damon’s eyes were bloodshot. He kicked Matt hard, k

The chatting nurses were all startled. The one whose hand Damon had grabbed was just about to get angry, but the moment she met Damon’s icy gaze, her courage crumbled.“We don’t know the full details either. We only heard that a young girl died in the operating room of the Blythes’ private hospital. If you’re interested, you can go take a look. The police are also investigating her identity.”After speaking, she seemed to recognize who Damon was and gave him a smile.“You’re the brother of the patient in the VIP ward upstairs, right? Then this probably has nothing to do with you. We all envy your sister, having three such attentive brothers!”Damon opened his mouth to refute her, but the words caught in his throat. He returned to the ward, deeply troubled, and shared what he’d heard with his brothers.Matt frowned.“Is this another one of Ava’s stunts? Let’s go see what she’s up to this time!”Just as the three of them were about to leave, Sophia stepped in to stop them.“Guys

Looking at the gifts I had prepared so carefully, tears streamed down my face again. It had taken me two whole months to make those gifts. Because of my body’s condition, I had to rest for a long time after every thirty minutes of work. Even so, I still fell ill twice during that period. The last time, my three brothers had brought Sophia along and saw me during one of those episodes. After that, everyone who took care of me was dismissed, and I was forced to take on heavy chores. I never took those gifts out again.Hearing what Maisie said, my three brothers fell into a long silence.Damon cleared his throat and spoke with difficulty.“Ava used to be such a good girl. It was only after Mom and Dad passed that she started lying. I failed to raise her right. But if she comes back this time and is willing to admit her mistakes, she’s still my little sister.”Matt and Chris looked a bit down as well.“No matter if Ava ran away from home on purpose or not, for Mom and Dad’s sake
