A Killing Dose

The words filtered into my head one by one as the detective woman came to a stop in front of a door.

I braced myself for the worse when she opened the door, revealing an office. A small stacked office.

File cabinets lined up one side of the wall, the side where the window was situated penning from the stray of light that uplifted the dreary room.

"Make yourself comfortable", the woman extolled, walking behind the little desk in the middle of the room and sitting behind it while gesturing to the seats opposite her.

I looked around the room again, my eyes going to the name tag on top of the desk.

Detective Rainey.

Sydney walked in ahead of me, sitting down so elegantly and without a care.

I took my time, question marks popping up in my head at an unquantified pace.

I wanted to see my dad's body not have a chitchat with the detective.

But I sat, their stares propelling me more than anything.

"Do you want coffee or", the woman paused, her gaze flicking to Sydney, "Blood?"
