I looked back at the drawings. “Jacob paints.”

“I know.” Drew shrugged.

“Jay draws too,” I continued.

Drew groaned.

“What?” I glanced up at him.

“Nothing.”

“That sounded like something.”

He picked up his plate.

“Jay likes to say he draws.”

I gasped dramatically. “You’re insulting your cousin’s art already?”

“You haven’t seen it yet.”

“I offered to draw him something.” I attempted to change the subject.

“That’s very kind of you.”

“You sound worried.”

“I’ve known Jay a long time.”

I laughed.

Then realized Drew had never answered the question that had actually brought me here.

I leaned against the opposite side of the desk.

“Can I ask you something?”

“You just did.” He shrugged.

I stared at him.

His mouth twitched. “Go ahead.”

“Why have you been avoiding me?”

His expression changed. “I haven’t.”

“You disappeared,” I pointed out.

“I was working.” Drew’s eyes drifted toward his plate of food.

“You skipped dinner.”

“I do that sometimes.”

“Jacob said you do.”

Drew took a bite of the shepherd’s pie. “Jacob talks too much.”

“I like him,” I admitted.

“I do too.” That answer came without hesitation.

I studied him.

“They’re your cousins?”

“Yeah.”

“Jay and Jacob are brothers,” I added.

“Unfortunately.”

I laughed.

Drew smiled again. “They’re not that bad.”

“Jay called me hot before saying hello,” I reminded him.

“Okay. He’s sometimes that bad.” Something about talking to Drew was easier now.

Maybe because we weren’t standing in front of the mansion with two other men watching every expression I made. Maybe because neither of us was talking about marriage.

I looked around his room again. “You really weren’t avoiding me?”

“No.” He paused. “Maybe a little.”

I turned toward him. “I knew it.”

“It’s not because I don’t like you.” He shrugged.

“That sounds promising.” I rolled my eyes.

Drew set the plate down. “I didn’t know what to do.”

That surprised me. “About me?”

“About all of it.” His gaze dropped. “My uncle told us you were coming. That we’d be staying here while you got settled.”

“But not why.” I added.

“No.” Drew’s eyes drifted towards the floor.

“And then I showed up and announced one of you had to marry me.”

“Pretty much.”

I covered my face. “Oh my God.”

Drew laughed.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. You didn’t make the rule.” A smile tugged at his lips.

“I still basically walked onto the lawn and told three strangers that one of them was going to marry me.”

I wanted to disappear.

“You were memorable.”

“Please stop.”

His laugh deepened.

I dropped my hands. “Are you freaked out?”

“Yes.”

I blinked.

The immediate answer made me smile. “Good.”

“Good?” Drew caught my gaze.

“I’m freaked out too.”

“That seems fair.”

I looked at the desk. “I thought maybe you didn’t want to get to know me.”

Drew went quiet. “I do.”

Something about the way he said it made me look at him. Really look at him. His expression had softened again. Not flirtatious exactly. Just sincere.

“I’d like to get to know you too.” I smiled.

“Then we have two months.”

My smile faded. “That’s not very long.”

“No.”

“And apparently I’m supposed to decide whether I love one of you during that time.”

Drew frowned.

“And choose the next king.”

His eyes snapped toward mine.

“What?” I stared at him. “You didn’t know that part either?”

“No.”

“Oh.” I folded my arms. “Apparently whoever I marry eventually takes the king’s crown.”

Drew stared at me. Then laughed. Not happily.

“Of course.”

“What?” I frowned.

“Nothing.” He shook his head.

“No. You can’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Say ‘of course’ like there’s an entire story behind it and then say nothing.”

He rubbed his jaw. “It’s just…” He looked toward the floor. “That’s a lot more complicated than choosing someone you want to marry.”

“Exactly.” I hadn’t expected the relief that came with hearing someone else say it. “Everyone keeps talking about marriage. Nobody seems bothered that I’m also choosing who gets power over an entire kingdom.”

Drew looked back at me. “I’m bothered.”

“Thank you.”

“You shouldn’t have to decide either one in two months,” He added.

“Thank you again.”

“And those probably shouldn’t even be the same decision.”

I stared.

He frowned. “What?”

“Nothing.”

“Now you’re doing it.” He folded his arms over his chest.

I smiled. “You’re just the first person who’s said that.”

Drew leaned back against the desk. “Seems obvious.”

“Apparently not.”

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Then he nodded toward the door. “Want to get out of here?”

I glanced around. “You’re inviting me to escape my own mansion?”

“Temporarily.”

“Where?”

“The gardens.”

I thought of the roses outside. “Okay.”

Drew grabbed a jacket from the chair. “I’ll show you the part tourists don’t see.”

“Do I count as a tourist?” I asked.

“Currently?” He looked me up and down thoughtfully. “Yes.”

“Rude.” I frowned.

“Come on, Your Highness.”

I groaned. “Never call me that.”

His grin widened. “Noted.”

  • Kingdoms Reign   A Piece of Her

Princess lessons were somehow worse than I imagined. There was no tiara. I felt cheated. Instead, I spent nearly two hours learning names. Council members. Foreign leaders. Military commanders. Regional governors. People whose titles contained so many words that I stopped listening halfway through them.By the end, I had learned exactly three things. First off, I hated politics. Second, apparently nodding at the correct moment was a royal skill. And third, becoming a princess did not magically improve my memory. I escaped the room feeling like my brain had melted.“Your Highness.”I stopped. Jay stood against the opposite wall.I groaned. “Don’t.”He smiled. “How was it?”“I’ve decided to abdicate.”“You aren’t queen yet.”“I’ll do it early.”He fell into step beside me. “What did they teach you?”“Names.”“Useful.”“I remember none of them.” I smirked.“Less useful.”“One man was named Lord something of something and apparentl

  • Kingdoms Reign   Maybe He Listened

I woke up expecting Jay to make breakfast miserable. That seemed reasonable considering I’d spent half the night replaying the sight of him sitting on my bed like he’d belonged there. He didn’t. That was somehow worse.I walked into the dining room to find Jacob already eating, Drew drinking coffee across from him, and Jay leaning back in his chair with a piece of toast in one hand. His eyes lifted as I entered. I braced myself.“Morning,” Jay said. That was it. No comment about Drew. No mention of seeing us kiss. No smug smile. Just morning.“Morning.” I hesitated beside the table. There were several empty chairs. Including the one beside Drew. I sat there. Jay didn’t react. At least, not visibly.Drew looked at me. “Sleep okay?”“Eventually,” I sighed. His expression changed slightly. He knew why. I hadn’t told him exactly what happened with Jay yet, but considering Jay had been waiting inside my bedroom less than a minute after Drew walked away, I had a feeling that conversation wa

  • Kingdoms Reign   The Locked Door

We stopped outside my bedroom. The hallway was quiet.I turned toward Drew. “So.”“So.”“I interrogated you.”“You did.” He smirked.“Accused you of manipulating my father,” I added.“Technically Jay accused me. You investigated.” Drew pointed out.“I like that version better.”“I thought you might.”I smiled. Then leaned up and kissed his cheek. “Goodnight.”His hand caught mine gently before I could pull away. “That’s it?”I raised an eyebrow. “Greedy.”“A little.”I kissed him properly. Quick. Warm. Enough to make both of us smile when I pulled away. “Better?”“Much.” He smiled.“Goodnight, Drew.” I smiled back.“Goodnight, Eliza.”I watched him walk away. Probably longer than I needed to. Then I opened my bedroom door, stepped inside, and locked it behind me. I leaned against the wood. A stupid smile spread across my face. I had kissed Drew. Three times now, technically. Which I absolutely counted.I turned

  • Kingdoms Reign   Not a Competition

I found Drew exactly where I probably should have expected to find him. His room. The door was open, light spilling into the hallway, and he was sitting at his desk with his laptop open in front of him. So much for taking the day off.I stopped in the doorway. “You lied.”Drew looked up. His eyebrows pulled together. “That’s an aggressive way to say hello.”“You said you finished your work.” I frowned, arms crossed over my chest, leaning against his doorframe. He glanced at the screen. “I did.”“Then what are you doing?”“Fixing something I decided I hated.”I stared at him. “That sounds suspiciously like work.”“It’s different.”“How?”“I’m not getting paid for this part.”I almost smiled. Almost, my arms relaxing slightly across my chest. Then I remembered why I was there.Drew noticed immediately. His expression changed. “What happened?”I leaned against the doorway. “I talked to my father.”He closed the laptop. All of his

  • Kingdoms Reign   Seeds of Doubt

Jay followed me out. The door had barely closed when he said, “You were really going to name Jacob.”I turned. “I was considering it.”“And marry Drew.”“I didn’t tell my father that.” I shook my head.“You didn’t have to.”I groaned. “This family.”Jay ignored that. “Did you know Drew is close with your father?”I stopped. There was something in his tone.“What do you mean?”Jay leaned against the wall. “He advises him.”“On what?” Something about his statement made me start to second-guess.“Different things.”“That’s incredibly specific.”Jay shrugged. “Politics. Strategy. Decisions.”I thought about what my father had just said. Drew had spent considerable time around the council. He had an excellent mind for planning.“Why didn’t Drew tell me that?” I frowned.Jay’s expression changed. There it was. The tiniest opening.“He didn’t?” Jay asked.“No.”“Huh.”I hated that sound. “What?”“Nothing.”“Jay.”He looked at me. “Maybe he didn’t think it mattered.”“You don’t believe that.”

  • Kingdoms Reign   Tradition, Not Law

I had barely made it halfway down the corridor when Jay appeared around the corner. Of course he did. I stopped. He stopped. For one second, we simply stared at each other. Then his eyes narrowed slightly. “You were with Jacob.”“That sounded weirdly accusatory.” I frowned.“It wasn’t.”“Good.”I moved to walk past him.“Eliza.”I stopped again.Jay’s expression had changed. The irritation I’d expected wasn’t there. He looked serious. “Can I talk to you?”I glanced back toward the door I’d just left. “About Drew again?”“No.”That caught my attention. “Then what?”“Your father wants to see you.”My stomach dropped. “What?”“The king sent someone looking for you. I told them I’d find you.”I stared at him. “Why?”“He didn’t tell me.” Jay shrugged.Of course he hadn’t. I’d spent the last twenty minutes building up enough courage to decide I needed to speak with my father. Apparently my father had decided to save me the trouble. How considerate.“Where is he?” I asked.“His study.” Jay w
