Anatoli

We kept an eye on our surroundings as we approached the building that we'd been directed to go to. Even though it looked like just the two of us entering this area, we had men hiding behind us. Zakh never went anywhere completely alone. It looked deserted around here, with no Cartel presence, but they were likely hanging back as security too. Shadows were deceptive like that.

After we entered the building that looked like a former restaurant or gambling room, we shared a look. No guards. No sentinels at the door. The faint scents of fried food and spiced meat hung in the air, but it wasn't so potent to suggest other areas of this building were actively serving food as a cover business.

Security could be out of sight, and I saw ample cameras anchored all over, but not running into someone seemed wrong. If they invited the Pakhan of the Antonovs here, and there was an implication of a serious negotiation happening, they'd beef up their presence, not play it down.

Zakh was tense,

LaraTwo months later..."Oh, honey," the older woman told me at the table out back. "I'm telling you. I devoured sauerkraut. That was my craving. Nothing sweet like cake." She licked her lips."Sauerkraut?" I grimaced but smiled as I snacked on a second slice of wedding cake. "Really, Violet?" I wouldn't call this cake my craving. It was just too good and I didn't want to pass it up. I only planned to ever have one wedding day and one wedding cake, so I'd enjoy as much as I wanted when I could. She nodded sagely. "It was all I could keep down.""Well, I'm doing better now." Morning sickness wasn't confined to the first trimester for me, but I was getting the hang of managing it better. A routine helped—that and never letting my stomach be completely empty, like it had in the beginning."Goodness, no," Margie exclaimed from the seat to my right. She'd come as a guest to the wedding, and I loved to see her mingling with us like this. Ever the mother hen, though, her personality remaine

AnatoliLara woke up three times throughout the night.Twice, she jolted awake with a gasp, scared from a nightmare. I wasn't surprised. Despite how thoroughly I fucked her, I'd only accomplished in tiring her body, physically. In her mind, I knew she would be struggling with the thoughts and visuals of what happened in the dining room. She hadn't only been a witness, but an active participant in it all. Anyone would be fucked up with the idea of being a deranged, powerful psychopath's target. But she'd fought too. She stabbed him twice. She saw his dead-eyed gaze up close. It was a lot for her, and I knew it would take time and patience for her to let this be just another detail of her new life with me.Each time she grew agitated to the point of waking, I calmed her down and held her, soothing her and comforting her. Sex wouldn't have been a bad idea, but I doubted Dr. Francis would approve of this much activity so soon after that scare the other day.The third time she woke, it had

LaraHis nostrils flared as he looked at me with that smoldering gaze that set me on fire.I didn't know if something was wrong with me to want him now. My addiction to this man and his love would never fade, but so soon after all that violence and danger, it seemed hasty."I love you, so fucking much," he growled as he stood.I rose with him, safe in his arms. He'd never drop me. He'd never let me go. I knew I could believe him when he promised it.As he carried me out of the bathroom and toward the bedroom, I dipped my head to kiss him softly. It wasn't enough. He groaned, dropping to the bed and covering me with the hot bulk of his rugged body. Pinning me to the mattress, he kissed me harder, with bite and more than a suggestion of hunger. He leaned back, raking his ravenous stare over me, and I drew in a deep breath of anticipation with the knowledge that he would render me into a molten puddle of bliss.I knew that look. I learned what it meant that first night we slept together.

Anatoli"Is Maxim all right?" I asked, recalling how he'd been on the ground when we arrived.Another soldier passed by, helping the wounded. "Yes, sir. I was there when he was hit with the Taser. He's being helped to his wing now for a gunshot wound to his thigh.""Thank you." I singled out Zakh and Maxim because they were my brothers by blood, but all the men who worked for the family were part of my concern. I didn't need to hover over them all. We had layers of help for these specific situations."Lara." Alisa came close and hugged her, but I didn't release her hand. She would be glued to me whether anyone liked it or not."Thank you," Lara told her, squeezing her hand. "Thank you for hiding and getting that knife for me."She nodded, smiling, but the sound of a man crying out in pain from outside had her furrowing her brow. "I think," she said as she stepped closer to Zakh, "that we might need to plan on hiring a better medical crew here."He grunted, smirking. "More than the obs

Anatoli"Anatoli!"I'd never heard a sweeter sound.Oh, thank fuck. She was alive!Lara's frantic shouts for me had me dropping to my knees to find her. She'd crawled under there when Diego lifted that second gun. From my vantage point of running across the room, I couldn't see if he'd hit her.I swore my heart stopped beating from the moment he pulled the trigger. The second he did, his attention trained downward, and I shot him. Again. And again. He wouldn't survive a bullet to the brain, and if he tried to, hyped up on some will to live in his psychosis, the three bullets embedded in his heart wouldn't let that happen. He'd fired at me, too, but the searing sting on my upper arm wasn't a worry. All I could be concerned about was Lara. My woman. My love."Anatoli!" She cried it in relief as she surfaced from beneath the table. On her hands and knees, she crawled toward me. Tears slipped from her eyes and spilled over her cheeks as she hurried to me, frantic and impatient. Swinging a

LaraDiego no longer aimed the gun at my belly. He strained to target the end of his weapon at my heart. Then higher, at my head. The tip of his gun never aligned with my body, though, because I kept fighting and wrestling to get away.He kept me close, and I punched and dodged. His arm reached out to grab me, but I kicked and twisted. Holding his arm and pushing it away, I prevented him from bringing the aim back to me.I didn't know how he could still be breathing and fighting so well with a steak knife in his ribs. He had a beefy torso, but a blade was a blade. Blood leaked from him. With the fast blur of avoiding his gun, I lacked the opportunity to hit harder. I couldn't grab the knife and use it again, and as I smacked into the edge of the table, I tried to find another. Groping the surface of the table, I sought another knife. Hell, a fork. A spoon. Anything. My fingers slipped over the cloth, finding nothing. As I tried to blindly find another weapon, I lost my concentration o
