I stare blankly at the wall, trying not to panic about the lack of windows, and the fact we are deep underground.
A knock at the door makes me jump. I’ve been in here for the past hour, trying to fall asleep, but unable to as the crushing reality of where I am looms over me. I’m not frightened of all the Noble’s in here, surprisingly, just that I feel as though I’m buried underground. The small clock mounted on the wall is the only way I can believe that it is actually nighttime, aside from the heaviness in my limbs and eyelids. I just wish I could actually fall asleep.
The door cracks open, and Stace looks in. It ta
~AvenThe moment I woke, I encouraged Stace to take me out of the dark depths of the cave.Mercifully, he agreed, and now, with Eryk, we are heading around the perimeter of the city and deeper into the desert. The wooden wheels of the carriage undulate over the soft sand, making me thankful Stace and Eryk are on the other side of the cabin, bumping shoulders with each other."This place is very strange looking,” I admit softly, looking through the cloudy glass and into the
~AvenEryk wasn’t able to find the familiar girl, and shortly after eating, we returned back to the city, this time delving into the depths of it.The Noble’s estate is right in the centre of the city, looking completely out of place. A dark, wrought iron fence stretches around the perimeter, encapsulating a large formal lawn with the manor right in the centre. Stace notes, as we enter through the front gate guarded by two tall individual’s who stare us down through the carriage windows as we pass, that most of the Noble’s live elsewhere, yet convene on this property often. The manor itself is stunning, like nothing I’ve e
~Aven"This doesn't mean I fully trust you.”Stace smiles, busing himself on the other end of the bedroom. I’m only half grateful that Stace is in this room to protect me against Larsen who is somewhere deep in this manor, but since I’m also kind of scared of Stace too, I’m not sure how to feel. There is only one bed in the room, which is thankfully a decent size, so I can avoid touching him at all cost.I don’t know what I’ll do if I feel that spark again...I don’t know how much of my resolve will start to melt away.
~AvenI almost make it back to the room. Almost.Turning the corner, I jump as someone emerges from the shadows, pausing in front of me."Woah..." I mutter, backing up a few steps in front.Shock and fear strike me as I realise it’s Larsen I’m looking at, his hood now removed, showing off his head of thick black hair, but his eyes are still the same, hauntingly dark as they examine me quietly. There’s something about Larsen that terrifies me. Not only i
(suggestive content below. Read at risk!)Mercifully, Stace didn't make me say goodbye to any of the Nobles. The moment we left, I could finally let out a deep sigh of relief. Stace transported us to a nearby train station, claiming boarding one would be the best way for us to see the sights of Territory Three. I haven't complained once since we boarded, just grateful to be away from all the Nobles. Especially Larsen."The view just keeps getting more beautiful the further along we go," I marvel, nose pressed against the glass, my breath fogging across the surface.
I'm wary as I step out of my room this morning. My hair is done, brushed out and laid carefully over my neck to cover the reddish purple mark that stains my neck. I'm not excited to face Stace this morning and talk about what happened last night. I'm not even sure if I know what happened...All I know is that I lost my senses and allowed him to quite literally sweep me off my feet.Keeping my head low, I wander out from the private rooms and into the common areas, eager for a drink of something...Anything to distract myself long enough to avoid needing to go visit Stace's room."Can I just get a coffee?" I ask, sitting down at a small bar area, nestling between
~AvenI barely make it into the next carriage before I catch sight of Eryk. He’s pushing through a small crowd, either oblivious to their irritated protests or he simply doesn’t care. I stop in my spot, frozen under his gaze. I’m tempted to back up and make for the back of the train, but he catches up to me far too quickly.“You can’t just run away like this,” he snaps, grabbing my forearm. I tug away, rubbing the tender spot where his grip was too tight.“I thought I saw someone I knew,” I mutter under my breath, falling into step beside him as we walk back the way he came from.He fro
~AvenI'm not sure why, but I can't sleep.Thoughts of Stace, my family back at home and my father who is apparently still alive haunts me as I toss and turn beneath my heavy blankets. Eventually the rattle of the train wheels against the track and the groan of the wooden carriages drives me to the point of near insanity, so I throw the covers off, dress more appropriately and leave my room.In the back of my mind, what the stranger mentioned to me today lingers, drawing me down the train to the common areas.Everything is vacant, the hour so late everyo
