Ava’s POV

"You look beautiful, honey," my mother said, her voice tight with a nervous kind of excitement I hadn't seen in years.

"Victor is so excited to finally have us all together. His son is joining us, too. I’ve heard he’s... well, he’s a bit intense, but I’m sure you’ll get along."

"I'm sure," I murmured, smoothing out my silk dress. My mind was miles away, wondering if Ryan was currently telling the hockey team that I was his property for the week.

I looked at my mum. She was glowing, grinning like a teenager. She had been absent for most of my life, especially since the divorce, and now she was moving on like nothing had ever happened.

She chatted happily, her tone the same breathless pitch as when she’d called me at school.

"Ava, darling! I know it's been a while, but I have the most incredible news," she’d said over the phone. "I'm getting married. To Victor. We’ve decided not to wait. We're moving into his estate this weekend."

My stomach had dropped. "Married? Mum, I haven't even met this man."

"That’s why we’re having brunch tomorrow at The Oak. You, me, Victor... and his son."

I nearly laughed at the memory. I was currently "fake dating" the most dangerous guy in school just to survive a viral scandal. I didn't have room for a new brother.

I had spent the rest of the night staring at my phone. I sent one text to Ryan: Everything okay?

But he didn't answer. That was days ago. I hadn't seen him in school, either. It was like he had vanished the moment he got what he wanted.

My phone buzzed on the restaurant table. Lily’s name appeared on the screen. I excused myself while my mum remained occupied on her phone, probably with Victor.

"Hey Lily, what’s up?"

"Ava, where are you? We need to talk. Right now." Her voice was urgent and far from its usual humor.

"What happened? I'm with my mum, it might take a while. You can tell me what's going on."

"Have you heard from Ryan since... you know?"

"Yeah." I paused, my throat tightening. "Well, no. Not exactly. I haven't seen him since Monday."

"Don't freak out but... I heard that Ryan took a bet from his friends to see if you'd fall for him."

The air left my lungs. "What? No. That can't be right."

"Well, it is. The whole school is talking about it, Ava."

"No, it's not true. It’s probably just a rumor."

"I don't think it is," Lily said softly. "I'm not trying to hurt you, but it’s best you know. Even his teammates were laughing about it. Maybe that's why you haven't heard from him. I'm really sorry."

"No, it can't be..."

"Honey! Ava, come on, they'll be here soon!" my mum called from the table. I was too shaken to even answer her.

"Ava, calm down, it’s going to be—"

I ended the call abruptly. I dialed Ryan’s number, my hands shaking so hard I nearly dropped the phone. It kept ringing and ringing, but there was no answer. He wasn't replying to my texts. He wasn't picking up.

I couldn't believe it. Small, hot sobs started to form in my eyes. Again. I had trusted someone again and ended up broken. Wow, Ava. Just wow.

I used the back of my hand to wipe my tears, forcing my breathing to level out. I didn't want my mum to start asking questions; she wasn't exactly the person I’d seek relationship advice from anyway.

I took a deep breath and turned back toward the table. My mum looked at me furiously, her eyes narrowed as she mouthed, "Don't ruin this for me."

She was selfish that way. Always had been.

As I took my seat, she turned her head and beamed at a man walking in our direction. He was slightly older than I expected but fit, with silvering hair and a suit that cost more than a car.

"Ava," my mother beamed, placing a hand on my trembling shoulder. "I’d like you to meet Victor."

Victor was strikingly attractive for his age, but my mind was miles away from their introductions.

"Where's your son?" my mother asked. "You said he was coming."

"He'll be here soon," Victor said, his voice smooth and polished. "It took a while to convince him, though."

As they fussed over each other, I tried to hold back the tears and keep my mind off the tragedy of my love life. First Daniel, then Ryan and his fake dating, which turned out to be nothing but a bet. Was that all I was worth? A game?

A notification popped up on my screen. I hurried to check it, hoping that it was Ryan, that he was apologizing, telling me the bet was a lie, that he’d been busy.

But no. It was just another comment on the viral video of Daniel cheating on me. It still stung. Every word was a reminder that I was the campus joke.

"There he is," Victor said, gesturing toward the entrance.

I didn't look up. I didn't want to see another happy face. I kept my eyes glued to my lap, picking at the silk of my dress.

"Sorry I’m late," a familiar voice said.

I slowly lifted my head.

Ryan was standing there. He wasn't in his jersey or his school hoodie. He was in a casual outfit that made him look like a stranger.

His eyes locked onto mine. He didn't look guilty. He didn't look like a guy who had just won a bet. He looked at me with a dark, knowing smirk that made my blood run cold.

"Ava," he said, pulling out the chair directly across from mine. "I see you've already met my father.”

Ava’s POV"You stood me up."Ryan swung his long legs over my window sill, dripping freezing rainwater all over my bedroom floor. His dark hair was plastered to his forehead, his jaw clenched tight as he pulled his hood back.I backed up until my spine hit my study desk, my hands shaking behind my back. "Ryan, get out. My mom is sleeping in the next room.""Why didn't you come to the bleachers, Ava?" Ryan asked, his voice low, rough, and icy. He took a heavy step toward me, water soaking into my thin bedroom carpet. "I waited forty minutes. I had Coach breathing down my neck, and I still sat there waiting for you.""Because I didn't want to come!" I hissed, keeping my voice down to a whisper. "I don't want to see you again, Ryan. Not here. Not under the bleachers. Nowhere."Ryan froze. "What?""You heard me," I said, forcing my voice to stay dead cold. I dug my fingernails into the edge of the desk so he wouldn't se

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Secrets in the dark

Ava’s POVAt 3:00 PM sharp, I was sitting in the darkest corner of the school library, staring at a blank page in my notebook. My phone was facedown on the table, buzzing once every few minutes. I didn't turn it over. I didn't need to check the screen to know who was texting me.The key Ryan had slipped into my palm sat at the bottom of my backpack, wrapped tightly in a paper napkin so it wouldn't rattle. My heart was pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird, but I kept my seat. I forced my eyes onto my history textbook, highlighting random sentences I couldn't even read.I couldn't go. If I went to the bleachers today, everything we broke apart to save would mean nothing."Hey," a soft voice whispered.I jumped, dropping my yellow highlighter onto the floor.Lily stood beside my table, holding two iced coffees and a stack of review sheets. She looked exhausted, her cardigan slightly off one shoulder. "I sa

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Living Apart

Ava’s POVThe silence in this new apartment was loud enough to make my ears ring.Three days. It had been three full days since we packed our bags and left the Carter mansion, but my brain still hadn't caught up to reality.I stood in the tiny kitchen, watching the yellow light flicker on the ceiling. There was no grand chandelier here. No marble countertops or heated floors. Just a small table, two cheap chairs, and the faint sound of traffic echoing from the street three floors below.Just like before, before Carter Mansion."Ava? Honey, are you okay?"My mom stepped out of her small bedroom, wrapping a worn cardigan around her shoulders. She looked exhausted, dark shadows hanging beneath her eyes, but for the first time in months, her hands weren't trembling."I'm fine, Mom," I said, offering a small, tight smile as I poured hot water into two mugs. "Just getting used to the noise from the street.""It's smal

Ava’s POVThe loud sound of my suitcase unzipping echoed off the walls of my bedroom.I pulled open my closet doors and grabbed a handful of clothes, tossing them carelessly into the black bag. My hands were shaking so badly I dropped a few hangers onto the floor. I didn't bother picking them up. I just needed to pack. I needed to get out of this house before I lost my mind."You're not actually doing this."I froze.Ryan was standing in my doorway. His wide shoulders took up the entire frame. He had finally taken off his hockey gear, wearing a plain black t-shirt and grey sweatpants, but the intense look in his eyes hadn't changed at all."My mom is waiting for me downstairs," I said, keeping my voice low. I turned my back to him, grabbing my sweaters from the drawer. "I only have ten minutes to pack my essentials."I heard his footsteps step into my room. He crossed the floor in three long strides, stopping right

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   BREAK UP, SPACE UP

Ava’s POV"Do you have any idea what you just did out there, Ryan?!"Coach’s roar rattled the cabinet inside the principal’s office. His face was bright red, veins bulging along his neck as he slammed a hand onto the desk."You jumped over a barrier in front of three regional scouts!" Coach yelled. "You smashed a girl's phone with your skate! Do you think college recruiters care about your knight-in-shining-armor routine? They care about control, Ryan! Control!""She was blackmailing her!" Ryan snapped back, his jaw tight as he stood tall in his heavy gear. Sweat was still dripping down his neck, but his eyes were cold. "She was trying to destroy Ava!""I don't give a damn about the girl drama!" Victor barked, stepping right into Ryan’s face. "Well I give a damn, she's going to be my sister right?" Ryan yelled back.Victor stood frozen for a second. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair messy for the first time in his life. "The local sports blog just posted a headline about a pl

Her eyes were red, her breathing fast and panicked.I gripped my hockey stick so hard the wood creaked in my hand. "What are you talking about, Lily? Speak clearly.""Iris has a video," Lily cried, wiping her face. "From some time ago. Something about a staircase. I don't know if it's fake, but It's a video of you and Ava. Iris told Ava that if she doesn't publicly confess to leaking the playbook before the end of the game today, she’s going to send that video to everyone. To the whole school, the news, and your dad and her mom."The blood in my veins went completely cold.So that's why she lied to my face last night. ."She made me promise not to tell you," Lily sobbed.
