Ava’s POV

"Wait," he muttered.

He replayed the audio file from the beginning. This time, everyone in the room leaned in, listening intently to the deep, aggressive tone of the voice.

It was definitely Ryan. But the background noise wasn't from the open woods or a snowy hiking trail. The acoustics were completely different.

It sounded like a locker room. A hockey locker room.

The recording snapped and popped again, the volume dipping before Ryan’s voice suddenly boomed through the speaker. "Come

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Freshman Year, Old Shadows

Ava’s POVThe smell of turpentine and wet clay was so thick in Studio 4B that it made my eyes water.I stood in the doorway, holding my easel, staring at twenty other freshmen who already looked like professional artists. Paint-stained jeans, charcoal smeared across their foreheads, and massive black portfolios propped against their stools. High school art class was officially dead."Take a seat anywhere," Professor Van called out, not looking up from his desk as he flipped through our intake files. "And don't get comfortable. Half of you won't survive the midterm review."I dragged my stool to an empty station near the back window."Nice charcoal set," a sharp, confident voice said beside me.I turned. A girl with dark, braided hair and piercing green eyes was leaning against the adjacent easel. She wore an oversized denim jacket splatter-painted in vibrant reds and golds."Thanks," I said, unbuckling my supply bag

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   The Only Girl

Ava's povI stood in the center of the living room, surrounded by four giant guys, and realized a terrifying truth: I was the only girl in Suite 104.My suitcase sat between my feet like a shield. Beside the couch stood Mason, a tall business major with slicked-back hair and a polished smile. Near the window sat Theo, a sarcastic film student in a denim jacket, holding a vintage camera. Resting on the kitchen counter was Caleb, a quiet engineering student typing endlessly on his laptop. And then there was Ryan, standing right in front of me in his gray university hoodie."Are you serious?" I whispered, looking around the room. "There are really no other girls here?""Mixed-gender suite, Bennett," Theo said from the window, leaning back against the sill with a small grin. "You get your own bedroom and your own lock, but the kitchen and TV belong to the boys. Welcome to college."My heart pounded against my ribs. "I'm changing

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   The Roommate problem

Ava's povThe paper in my hand felt like a bomb waiting to go off.I stood by the window of our small apartment, staring at the bold black letters printed at the bottom of my college housing form.Student Name: Ava BennettRoom Assignment: East Campus Hall, Room 302Co-Applicant / Assigned Roommate: Ryan Carter"Ava, sweetie?" my mom called out from the kitchen, taping up a cardboard box. "Did you pack your art pads? The bus leaves in two hours."I quickly folded the paper and shoved it deep into my pocket. "Yeah, Mom. All packed."For two months, my mom and I had been living out of suitcases at my aunt’s house three towns away. It was supposed to be a break—a quiet summer away from Victor Carter, the endless sports reporters, and the fake news blogs that had turned our lives upside down.My mom looked better now. Her hands didn't shake when she poured her tea, and she laughed more often. She was rebuilding her life piece by piece. And I was trying to do the same.I had spent my entir

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   CONGRATULATIONS,YOU CAN'T ESCAPE HIM

Ava’s POVI turned my back on the ice rink and ran.Down the concrete stairs of the arena, my boots made echoing thuds against the ground. Behind me, the screams of the crowd were still booming, celebration music shaking the steel beams above.Ryan had won the championship. He had played like a wild animal on the ice, unstoppable and terrifying. And then he looked straight up into the stands and caught me watching him.I wiped a hot tear from my cheek as I pushed open the double doors leading into the main corridor."Ava, wait up!"My mom was standing near the concessions stand, holding two paper cups of hot coffee. She had insisted on coming to the game today, wanting to support the school despite everything that had happened.I stopped beside her, trying to catch my breath. "Mom, we need to go. Right now.""What's wrong, honey?" my mom asked, her eyes searching my face with concern. "Did something happen

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Goodbye, Ava

Ava’s POV"You stood me up."Ryan swung his long legs over my window sill, dripping freezing rainwater all over my bedroom floor. His dark hair was plastered to his forehead, his jaw clenched tight as he pulled his hood back.I backed up until my spine hit my study desk, my hands shaking behind my back. "Ryan, get out. My mom is sleeping in the next room.""Why didn't you come to the bleachers, Ava?" Ryan asked, his voice low, rough, and icy. He took a heavy step toward me, water soaking into my thin bedroom carpet. "I waited forty minutes. I had Coach breathing down my neck, and I still sat there waiting for you.""Because I didn't want to come!" I hissed, keeping my voice down to a whisper. "I don't want to see you again, Ryan. Not here. Not under the bleachers. Nowhere."Ryan froze. "What?""You heard me," I said, forcing my voice to stay dead cold. I dug my fingernails into the edge of the desk so he wouldn't se

  • Kissing the Hockey Captain   Secrets in the dark

Ava’s POVAt 3:00 PM sharp, I was sitting in the darkest corner of the school library, staring at a blank page in my notebook. My phone was facedown on the table, buzzing once every few minutes. I didn't turn it over. I didn't need to check the screen to know who was texting me.The key Ryan had slipped into my palm sat at the bottom of my backpack, wrapped tightly in a paper napkin so it wouldn't rattle. My heart was pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird, but I kept my seat. I forced my eyes onto my history textbook, highlighting random sentences I couldn't even read.I couldn't go. If I went to the bleachers today, everything we broke apart to save would mean nothing."Hey," a soft voice whispered.I jumped, dropping my yellow highlighter onto the floor.Lily stood beside my table, holding two iced coffees and a stack of review sheets. She looked exhausted, her cardigan slightly off one shoulder. "I sa
