“You’re going to take your sister’s place and marry Mr. Gian.”

The words fell from her father’s mouth with a coldness that sliced straight through her bones. As if he were asking her to run to the corner store for salt, not telling her to hand over her entire life to a man she’d never even met.

Aurelia had just stepped off the last stair when the sentence hit her. Her heart dropped. She stared at her parents sitting in the living room, their faces paler than the walls behind them. On the table, wedding invitations were scattered everywhere like the remnants of a battlefield. Her sister’s name and her would-be groom were clearly printed on each one.

“What... what do you mean, Dad?” Her voice was barely audible, no more than a whisper inside a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from.

Her mother, who looked ten years older overnight, dabbed at her tears with a crumpled tissue. She couldn’t even look Aurelia in the eye.

“Your sister called from Japan,” she said shakily. “She said she can’t get married.”

Aurelia stepped forward, disbelief tightening her chest.

“Devina said that? Why?”

Her father nodded, his jaw clenched. “I don’t know. And we don’t have time to force her. So you’re taking her place.”

“Why me? I don’t even know the man,” Aurelia whispered, her body beginning to tremble.

Her father’s gaze sharpened cold, judging.

“Because you’re the only one left. We don’t have time, Lia. Mr. Gian’s family is furious. They’re demanding double compensation for every wedding expense. If we don’t act fast… everything is finished.”

“Our savings, this house, your father’s shop… all gone,” her mother added weakly. “And our family’s reputation will be destroyed. So the only way is for you to replace Devina.”

Aurelia let out a bitter laugh. Not because anything was funny, but because the world she lived in felt so absurd.

“So one person runs away, and another has to be sacrificed? Why is it always me? Why am I always the one thrown under the bus?”

“Aurelia, stop being dramatic. This isn’t about you or Devina. This is about the family,” her father snapped.

“Dramatic?” Aurelia’s voice rose. “You’re telling me to marry a stranger, and I’M dramatic?”

Her mother squeezed her hands tightly.

“You’re a good girl, Lia. We know you can handle this. Besides… Mr. Gian didn’t object. That means he’s willing to accept you.”

“But I’m not willing to accept him!” Aurelia cried, tears spilling freely. “I’m not a bargaining chip! I’m not a sacrifice!”

Her father stood, his posture rigid.

“Enough. The decision is made. You’re getting married next week.”

There was no room for discussion. No one cared about what she wanted.

Aurelia felt like a pawn on a giant chessboard, destined to be sacrificed so the king and queen could win. Nothing more than a number on her family’s balance sheet.

That night, Aurelia lay curled on her side, facing away from the slightly open window. A soft night breeze slipped inside, swaying the thin curtains like the breath of a ghost. Her eyes stared blankly at her silent phone. No replies, no missed calls.

Her last messages to Devina were still open:

Sis, please answer. I’m begging you. Don’t leave this to me. I don’t know why you ran away, but this is crazy… Dad wants me to take your place and marry a man I don’t even know.

Aurelia shut her eyes.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated.

Her sister was calling.

With trembling hands, Aurelia swiped the screen.

“Hello?”

“Lia…” Devina’s voice was thin and hoarse, like someone holding back tears for too long.

“Why? Why did you leave? Why did you dump everything on me?”

Aurelia’s voice cracked instantly.

“I’m sorry…” Devina whispered. “I know you must be angry. I know I’m a coward…”

“You don’t know anything!” Aurelia snapped. “Dad wants me to get married next week! No questions, no choices. I’m not you, Devina. I can’t..”

“Lia…” Devina cut in, her voice trembling. “I’m really sorry. I didn’t know what else to do. I… I couldn’t go through with it.”

“Why?” Aurelia pushed. “Is it really that bad? You could’ve at least explained something! Instead you ran away and let them offer me up like some kind of sacrifice! How is that fair?!”

Silence.

Only Devina’s uneven breathing filled the line—like she was wrestling with something heavy.

After a long moment, Aurelia pleaded softly yet painfully,

“Sis… please. Just this once, stop making me the one who pays for everything.”

“I’m sorry, Lia… but this time, I really can’t. Please, Lia. This is for our family.” Devina’s voice cracked.

Aurelia let out a bitter, humorless laugh.

“No family forces one of its members to give up their life for the others.”

Devina fell silent.

“He’s rich, Lia. You could be happy with him,” she said finally.

“Then why don’t you marry him?” Aurelia snapped. “You know him. You’ve met him. You know what he’s like, so why did you run?”

Aurelia felt too overwhelmed to even cry. Her emotions were tangled, spilled everywhere, too messy to sort through. Her life had been taken from her over and over—forced sacrifices, forced compromises—while everyone else received exceptions.

“I can’t marry Mr. Gian,” Devina whispered, her voice shaking.

“Oh yeah? Why not? What’s the reason?” Aurelia shouted, unable to hold back anymore.

“Because Mr. Gian is a terrifying man, cold, harsh, ruthless… and most importantly… he’s impotent.”

Click.

The call ended abruptly.

Aurelia stared at the dark screen, her fingers still clenched tightly around the phone.

Her sister’s final words echoed in her mind, twisting everything inside her.

She felt her world tilt into madness.

Forced to marry a stranger and now she learns the man is cruel?

And impotent?

This was insane. Completely insane.

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   176. Do your best!

Aurelia quickly grabbed her crossbody bag. Her fingers trembled slightly as she snatched up her room key, then hurried out of the dorm without a second thought. The cold air bit at her skin, but she barely noticed. Her gaze immediately landed on the luxurious black car parked neatly along the curb. The same car from yesterday, waiting for her with an unmistakable air of elegance that stood out among the ordinary vehicles around it.A sharply dressed man stepped out from the driver's seat. He hurried around to open the rear door, making Aurelia wince awkwardly. Still unaccustomed to such formal treatment, she lowered her head slightly before climbing inside.“Didn't you say we were meeting at the restaurant at ten?” she asked as soon as she settled into her seat, her voice still carrying traces of haste.Instead of answering right away, the man beside her, Baskara, turned with a faint smile.“Good morning, Lia.”Aureli

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   175. Stop Apologizing All the Time!

Morning arrived in Melbourne wrapped in golden sunlight filtering through the thin curtains of Aurelia's dorm room. The air was still bitterly cold despite the rising sun.Aurelia opened her eyes, her eyelids still heavy with sleep. She slowly sat up, giving her body time to adjust. Rubbing her face, she reached toward the nightstand and grabbed the glass of water she had prepared the night before. She drank it slowly, savoring the coolness that soothed her dry throat. The moment her gaze fell on her phone screen, she remembered something. The message she had put off reading the night before. With a sluggish motion, she unlocked her phone.Sure enough, there was a message from Gian.[Sorry. I just finished. Are you already asleep?]Aurelia stared at the message without much expression. Her heart had become numb to apologies that came too often without any real change behind them. Her lips moved sl

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   174. About the Sweet Reunion

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. Something urgent came up. I'll call you back later."The short message was finally sent.Gian stared at his phone screen for several seconds longer than usual, as if hoping Aurelia would understand. Even though he knew that, for what felt like the hundredth time, he was postponing time meant for his wife. His thumb had hesitated before pressing send, but the reality in front of him left no room for another choice. With a long breath, Gian slipped his phone into his suit pocket. The real world demanded his presence, even when all he wanted was to choose Aurelia, waiting across the ocean. As he approached the front door, the noise outside grew louder.Camera flashes. The glare of spotlights.Reporters shouting over one another. All of it shattered the usual tranquility of the official residence."Mr. Gian! Is it true that you met Chef Devina this afternoon?""Are you pl

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   173. Why??

"Mom..." Gian drew a breath. "Why? Why are you asking me that?""I heard Devina came to your office. Around lunchtime," his mother replied calmly.Gian blinked. So the news had already reached her.He rubbed the bridge of his nose, recalling Devina's gaze in his office. Calm. Certain. Direct.Divorce Aurelia. She had said it without hesitation. And he had refused without hesitation."Yes, she came," Gian finally admitted. "Without an appointment. She brought lunch and invited me to eat with her. We only talked for a little while.""A little while?" Mrs. Lestari raised an eyebrow. "And... did she ask for anything?"Gian suppressed a sigh."She wanted me to divorce Aurelia."His voice was low but firm."I told her I never would."A flicker of relief crossed his mother's face, though it didn't last long."Good. But there's still something I need to know, Gian."Mrs. Lestari stepped forward and took a seat."When the past comes knocking, even the most honest person is tested by how they c

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   172. Do You Still Love Her?

Aurelia nodded, signaling that she accepted Baskara's offer. The decision came with a heartbeat that thundered louder than usual in her chest. She reassured herself that this man was not a complete stranger. He was Caca's father, after all. Caca had been her private tutoring student. So wasn't it reasonable to trust him?Wasn't there already a connection between them that made things feel a little safer? But when they stepped out of the restaurant, she was met with a small surprise. She had assumed Baskara would be driving himself. She was completely wrong.A sleek black car was already waiting at the entrance, and a chauffeur stood beside it, promptly opening the door for them.Aurelia felt slightly awkward. She climbed into the car and sat beside Baskara. The scent of expensive leather filled the enclosed space.Without saying much, Baskara immediately pulled out his phone. His fingers moved swiftl

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   171. A Good Opportunity

Aurelia shot to her feet. Her body felt hot despite the cool air drifting from the restaurant's ventilation system. Her cheeks flushed with a mixture of embarrassment and irritation as she stared wide-eyed at the man sitting across from her."I'm sorry, but I'm married. And I don't think it's appropriate for me to hear something like that," she said, her voice trembling but firm.A few people at nearby tables glanced their way, making her even more uncomfortable. She lowered her gaze briefly and took a deep breath to calm herself.Meanwhile, Baskara let out a soft chuckle. His expression remained calm, as though he found her reaction amusing."Hey, don't get the wrong idea. That's not what I meant. I was joking," he said, raising both hands in surrender. "When I said you were interesting, I wasn't talking about you personally. I just realized you might be the perfect temporary assistant."Aurelia frowned."An assistant?"

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   166. A String of Messages

The notification sound from her phone kept chiming, shattering the silence of the dorm room still wrapped in Melbourne's chilly morning air. The window had been left slightly open, letting in a sharp breeze that carried the damp scent of last night's rain. Aurelia stirred beneath the covers on her

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   165. New Step

Aurelia’s legs felt heavy as she descended the airplane stairs. The cool night air greeted her the moment she stepped out of the cabin, a stark contrast to Jakarta’s humid, crowded atmosphere. So this was it: Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, a place that had existed only in her imagination for months

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   164. Refrain

The sight of Aurelia disappearing beyond the gate left a weight in Gian's chest that felt impossible to carry. The last glimpse of her back, the brief sway of her long hair before she vanished into the crowd, left him rooted to the spot.He stood there silently, his heavy breathing

  • LOVE BEYOND THE PAIN   163. Go

Gian finally finished his sentence. His voice was deep, trembling yet resolute."...but never think that I've given up. I'll keep fighting to win your heart back, even if it takes the rest of my life."The words seemed to slip through the walls Aurelia had spent so long building aro
