QUINN’S POV

I watch the valet open the rear passenger door of an executive sedan. Senator Wallace practically stumbles into the back seat of the vehicle, his shoulders hunched.

He looks terrified. The engine hums to life, and the sedan rolls out smoothly into the night.

What the hell happened to him?

Before I can take a step toward the driveway, my radio bursts with sudden static.

"Quinn!" Neha’s voice barks over the line. "Get back inside now!"

I pivot, pushing through the heavy glass doors back into the warm heat of the venue.

Panic has already rippled through the ballroom. Somewhere near the central stage, glass has shattered against the floor, and two men in suits are shouting over each other before being restrained by security.

"What happened?" I demand, cutting through the crowd to reach Neha.

"Some drunken executive tried to force his way into the private wing," she sighs, her eyes sweeping the room with annoyance.

"He smashed a display case before security brought him down."

I scan the elevated VIP balcony overlooking the chaos, and my heart drops.

Standing at the edge of the dark glass railing, looking down at the panic below as if it were nothing more than a poorly rehearsed play, is Ronan Siren.

He didn't leave?

As if feeling the weight of my gaze, Ronan turns his head.

Across the crowded ballroom, through the flashing lights and murmuring crowd, his sharp grey eyes lock directly onto mine.

Neither of us moves. The shouting around us fades into a dull blur. A faint, knowing smile tugs at the corner of his lips, a look that says I see you, and you can't touch me.

"Quinn! Hey!" Neha grabs my shoulder, pulling me out of the stare down. "Chief wants us back at the precinct immediately. The whole detail is packing up."

I break contact with Ronan, forcing a sharp breath into my lungs. "Yeah. Let's go."

The precinct lights are harsh when we walk in thirty minutes later.

Neha and I march straight toward the Intelligence Unit’s briefing room.

Chief John stands at the head of the room, his jacket off, sleeves rolled to his elbows, looking every bit the hardened, dedicated police veteran I've looked up to for years.

"Listen up!" Chief John barks, slapping a hand onto the conference table.

"Ten minutes ago, an anonymous courier dropped a flash drive directly at our front desk with no return address. But inside?"

He clicks a button on his remote, and the large monitor behind him turns on. "We have complete, unredacted offshore bank records, wire transfers, and illegal shell company filings belonging to Senator Wallace."

A wave of low gasps ripples through the officers in the room. My stomach twists into a tight, cold knot.

The same senator wallace of tonight??

"This is the break we needed," Chief John says, his voice booming with authority.

"The DA has already signed off on an emergency warrant based on the drive's contents. We are executing a search and seizure on Wallace’s estate before he can shred his physical documents."

"Load up, people!" a senior detective shouts. Chairs scrape against the floor as officers scramble to gear up.

I grab my vest from my locker, sliding the heavy plates over my chest and fastening the Velcro straps with quick, practiced movements. My hands are steady, but my mind is racing.

There is no way this could be a coincidence.

"Quinn, move it!" Neha calls out, slapping her sidearm into her holster. "We're in the lead transport."

Before I can step out into the hallway, the heavy double doors of the briefing room swing open.

A man in a sharp, tailored navy suit walks in, flanked by two armed state guards. The entire room comes to a grinding halt.

It’s Deputy Director Vance from the State Integrity Oversight Bureau.

"Stand down, officers," Vance announces, his voice completely flat and devoid of emotion. "Unbuckle the vests."

Chief John steps forward, his brow furrowed in immediate anger. "Vance? What the hell is this? We have a signed warrant from the District Attorney. We're on our way to Wallace's estate right now."

Vance pulls a sealed white folder from beneath his arm and tosses it onto the briefing table.

"Senator Wallace tendered his official resignation fifteen minutes ago, citing severe personal health issues. The federal government has assumed jurisdiction over the investigation into his financial holdings, and the case has been sealed pending federal review."

"Sealed?!" Chief John slams his fist onto the table, his face flushing red.

"He’s dirty! We have the wire transfers right here on our screen!"

"You have unverified, illegally obtained data from an untraceable source," Vance corrects him smoothly, not flinching for a second.

"Touch those files again, Drayam, and I will suspend your entire unit for evidence tampering. The raid is cancelled. Clear your desks and go home."

Silence falls over the precinct, heavy, toxic, and suffocating.

Vance turns on his heel and exits the room, his guards falling into step behind him, leaving twenty armed officers standing in frozen, humiliated disbelief.

"Unbelievable," Neha mutters, her jaw tight as she aggressively unstraps her tactical vest.

"Hey, guys..."

An officer standing near the wall mounted television in the corner clicks the volume button on the remote.

The room quietens as the breaking news broadcast fills the screen. A sharp news anchor stands in front of a live feed of the city’s harbor district, rain gleaming under the studio lights.

"...repeating our top story tonight," the anchor announces.

"In a surprise press release following Senator Wallace’s sudden resignation, the City Zoning Board has officially finalized the transfer of the long contested North Harbor Industrial and Construction Development project."

The screen cuts to a high definition rendering of a massive, multibillion commercial hub spanning across the harbor.

"The contract, previously managed and stalled under Senator Wallace’s committee, has been awarded in its entirety to the Siren Global Development Group, led by CEO Ronan Siren. The Siren Group promises thousands of new jobs and immediate infrastructure funding for the city..."

The television screen shifts to a live shot taken outside the venue just moments ago.

Ronan stands under an umbrella, flanked by lawyers, offering a calm, polished smile to the flashing news cameras before stepping into his vehicle.

My hands curl into tight fists at my sides, my nails biting hard into my palms.

It was all him. I knew it.

I didn't know how he'd done it, but somehow, in the span of a single evening, Senator Wallace had gone from untouchable to disgraced, and Ronan Siren had walked away with the biggest development contract in the city.

"Quinn?" Neha asks quietly, noticing the way I’m staring at the television.

"Who exactly is this man, Neha?" I whisper, my voice shaking slightly.

"He's behind this, right?"

Neha doesn't answer immediately. Around us, nobody does. Because everyone in the room is watching the same screen.

And everyone is thinking the same thing.

We hadn't just lost tonight.

We'd played right into his hands.

My father has many names.Business mogul. Philanthropist. Visionary.I only know one.Coward.I scoff to myself as the staring game continues between us. They see him as some giant. A god. It's honestly laughable. To me, though, he's nothing more than a dog. Unfortunately, that dog made me. It makes me wonder what that makes me.Around the table, the board begins to grow restless. The shuffling of papers, the sideways glances. A very normal occurrence at every one of our meetings. Let them fret.
