"Quinn? What is it? What happened?"

Neha’s voice cut through the ringing in my ears, but her face felt blurred, far away.

"It's nothing," I lied, my tone totally flat as I forced my hand to drop away from the phone. "Just... news from the hospital."

"Good news or bad news?" she asked, leaning over the desk to try and read my face. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Good news," I said, forcing a faint, tight nod that felt entirely fake. "They found a grant. A non-profit foundation stepped in to clear the debt and put Mum on the priority donor list."

Neha blinked, taking a small step back in surprise. "Wait, really? That fast? Quinn, that’s incredible."

"Yeah," I muttered, staring past her toward Chief John's closed office door. "Incredible."

"Which foundation?" she asked, her investigator’s eye instantly sharpening. "Was it local?"

"I don't know," I lied again, turning my face toward my computer screen to break eye contact. "It was just an automated notification. I haven't talked to the administration yet."

Neha studied me for two seconds longer than I liked, but before she could dig deeper, Chief John’s door flew open with a loud bang. He stepped out of his office, his face bright red and his collar unbuttoned.

"Maryham!" John roared across the room, ignoring the dozen other officers who suddenly froze at their desks. "In my office. Now."

I stepped into John's office, and he slammed the door shut behind me, not bothering to offer me a chair.

"Legal shot down my federal warrant request," John growled, pacing behind his desk like a caged animal.

"They said our ties between Siren Global and the North Harbor buyout are 'circumstantial.' Can you believe that bullshit?"

"I can," I said quietly, keeping my hands resting flat behind my back. "There's no loose ends, Chief."

"I don't care about his loose ends!" John snapped, leaning heavily over his desk and pointing a thick finger at my chest. "I want him on something, Quinn. I don't care if you have to follow him to his house, his gym, or his private dinners. You tail him. You find the thread that unravels him."

I looked at Chief John, seeing the rage in his eyes, and then I thought about the text message sitting on my phone. The $150,000 clearance. My mother's instated transplant status.

If I tail him for you, John, I kill my mother.

"Understood, Chief," I said, forcing the words past the lump in my throat. "I'll keep looking."

"Get back to work," John grunted, waving a hand to dismiss me as he picked up his desk phone again.

I didn't go back to my desk. I grabbed my leather jacket from the back of my chair, ignored Neha’s calling out my name, and walked straight out of the precinct into the cold afternoon air.

The hospital room was different.

When I pushed open the door to room 408 on the specialty floor, the loud, grinding hum of the old dialysis machine was gone.

Instead, the room was quiet, spacious, and filled with sunlight streaming through the window. Fresh flowers sat on the windowsill. Brand-new digital monitoring equipment hummed softly in the corner, glowing with steady, healthy green lines.

My sister Quincy was sitting in a comfortable plush armchair in the corner, her school binder open on her lap, fast asleep.

My mother lay in the center of the room on an adjustable, heated hospital bed. Her skin was still pale, but the deep, exhausted gray tint under her eyes seemed slightly lifted.

"Quinn?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I swallowed hard, stepping quietly across the hardwood floor and pulling up a chair beside her bed. I gently took her paper-thin hand in mine.

"Hey, Mum," I murmured, offering her a small, gentle smile. "How are you feeling?"

"I feel... lighter," she whispered, her weak fingers closing around mine. "The doctors came in an hour ago. Dr. Peter was smiling, Quinn. He said... he said a grant came through. He said I'm getting the transplant."

A tear slipped from the corner of her eye, soaking into the white pillowcase.

"Is it true?" she asked softly, looking up at me with wide, hopeful eyes that I hadn't seen in three years. "Are we going to be okay?"

The weight in my chest was so suffocating I could barely breathe. I looked at my mother's frail body, then at my little sister sleeping peacefully in the corner without the terror of medical bills hanging over her head.

Ronan had saved them. He had saved them with a single stroke of his pen, without even blinking at the cost.

"Yeah, Mum," I croaked, kissing the back of her hand as a hot tear burned my own eyes. "It's true. You're getting the surgery. We're going to be okay."

"Thank God," she whispered, closing her eyes and letting out a long, peaceful breath. "Thank God."

Not God, I thought bitterly, staring at the polished white floor. Ronan Siren.

I stayed by her bed until her breathing turned slow and rhythmic, signaling she was back asleep.

My phone vibrated in my jacket pocket. It was a text from an unlisted number:

Come outside.

My pulse spiked instantly, hammering wildly against my ribs. I stared at the screen for three long seconds before locking the phone and sliding it back into my pocket.

I walked out and sitting double-parked under the dim glow of a streetlamp was a long, obsidian-black Maybach. As I approached the car, the rear tinted window rolled down halfway.

Ronan sat in the back seat.

I stopped two feet from the car, my hands clenched tightly inside my jacket pockets.

"I told you no, Ronan. I told you I wouldn't take a dime from you."

"And I told you pride is a terrible reason to let someone die," Ronan said, his sharp gray eyes locking onto mine through the glass.

"Your mother is on the priority list. The surgical team is flying in tomorrow morning. She will have her kidney within forty-eight hours."

"You think buying her life means you own me now?"

Ronan simply leaned slightly closer to the window, his expression unreadable, almost cold.

"I don't need to own you, Quinn," Ronan murmured, his gray eyes fixing on mine with a quiet, terrifying intensity.

"You came out here because you know the truth. You owe me a debt you can never repay with money or a police badge."

"So what do you want?" I demanded, my breath misting in the cold air. "Tell me what you want from me."

Ronan reached out, unlocking the rear car door from the inside. The heavy door clicked open an inch, inviting me into the warm, leather-scented dark of his car.

"Get in," Ronan said softly. "And I'll tell you what comes next."

I stood on the pavement, looking at the open car door, knowing that if I stepped inside, there was no coming back.

My mother’s life was bought. My debt was sealed.

I reached out my hand, grabbed the handle, and pulled the door wide open.

He opened the door and walked out, his polished shoes echoing down the sterile hallway until the sound faded completely.I stood alone in the office, my chest heaving, my heart hammering like a trapped bird. I sank heavily into the leather chair Ronan had just vacated, burying my face in my hands.By the time I dragged myself back to the precinct, it was past 4:00 PM.The precinct was buzzing with the usual chaotic noise phones ringing, keys clacking, officers shouting over desks. I walked past Chief John’s office. The blinds were drawn tight, but I could hear him bellowing into his desk phone inside.I collapsed into my desk chair, rubbing my aching temples."You look like shit," a voice said softly.I looked up. Neha was leaning against the edge of my desk, holding a fresh cup of coffee. She set it down in front of me, her eyes taking in the dark circles under my eyes and the posture of a man ready to snap."Thanks," I muttered, pulling the cup toward me. "I feel like shit.""Did yo

The air in the office went instantly thin.I stood frozen in the doorway, my hand still resting on the frame, my heart slamming violently against my ribs. The sheer absurdity of the image in front of me took a full five seconds to process the sterile white walls, the smell of antiseptic, Dr. Peter sweating through his white coat, and Ronan Siren sitting like he owned the entire wing.Which, I reminded myself with a sudden, sickening jolt, he practically did."What are you doing here?" My voice came out lower than I intended, rough with the exhaustion of a twenty-four-hour shift and laced with outright hostility."Quinn," Dr. Peter interjected quickly, his hands hovering nervously over the file on his desk as he looked between us. "Please, step in and close the door. We were just discussing your mother's case…""He has no business discussing my mother's case," I snapped, stepping into the room and letting the door click shut behind me. I kept my eyes locked on Ronan. "I asked you

QUINN’S POV"He’s clean."Chief John threw a thick, leatherbound folder onto the center briefing table with enough force to send a gust of cold air across the room."I don't believe it for a second," John snapped, pacing the narrow space between the whiteboard and the projector screen."I want every single off-the-books asset we have on Siren Global. I don't care if you have to dig through tax filings from ten years ago. Find me a crack.""Chief," Neha said carefully from her stool, leaning forward. "Vance made it clear…""I don't give a damn what Vance said!" John barked, his eyes blazing."He just swallowed the entire North Harbor project whole, right in front of our faces. You tell me a man pulls off a trick like that without breaking a single law? Dig. Find something."He didn't wait for a response before slamming his office door shut behind him.The room fell into an uncomfortable, heavy silence.I sat down at my desk, staring at the glowing screen. We've been on it for six hours

Neha’s voice barks over the line. "Get back inside now!"I pivot, pushing through the heavy glass doors back into the warm heat of the venue.Panic has already rippled through the ballroom. Somewhere near the central stage, glass has shattered against the floor, and two men in suits are shouting over each other before being restrained by security."What happened?" I demand, cutting through the crowd to reach Neha."Some drunken executive tried to force his way into the private wing," she sighs, her eyes sweeping the room with annoyance."He smashed a display case before security brought him down."I
