The room pulsed with tension as I paced, my footsteps echoing off the walls like the steady beat of a drum. Rick was frustrated as he repeatedly dialed Alex's number and yet no answer.

“He’s still not picking up,” Rick informed me, his voice tight with concern.

“Well, keep trying,” I urged, my tone clipped with impatience. “Try until someone picks up,” I commanded, my anxiety bubbling just beneath the surface.
