Isabella's POV

"What do you want to do with the phone?" Adrian asked.

His question hung in the air between us, calm on the surface, but I could hear the current underneath it — like he already knew the answer would make things worse.

"What do I want to do with my phone?" I repeated, my voice climbing before I could stop it. How can Adrian ask me such a crazy question? That was insane.

"Adrian, you didn't buy that phone. I did. With my own money, before I ever set foot in this house. You don't

    Isabella's POV "What do you want to do with the phone?" Adrian asked.His question hung in the air between us, calm on the surface, but I could hear the current underneath it — like he already knew the answer would make things worse."What do I want to do with my phone?" I repeated, my voice climbing before I could stop it. How can Adrian ask me such a crazy question? That was insane. "Adrian, you didn't buy that phone. I did. With my own money, before I ever set foot in this house. You don't get to question what I do with something that's mine."His jaw flexed. He said nothing, but his silence had teeth in it now."You don't have that right," I said, quieter this time, because I needed him to actually hear it instead of just weather it.He looked at me like I'd said something in a language he used to know and had forgotten. Confused. Almost lost. For a second I thought I saw something crack behind his eyes, and then he turned toward the door.I wasn't letting him walk away from th

  • LOVING THE WRONG BRIDE   CHAPTER 40;

    Isabella's POV The call came while I was still watching Adrian's face, still trying to read whatever storm was moving behind his eyes."Sir." Mr. Tim's voice was clipped, urgent, the kind of tone that made the hair on my arms rise. "You didn't say anything about the message." He murmured.Adrian went still. "What message, Tim?""The urgent one. I told you an hour ago." Tim's gaze flicked to me, then away, like I was something he shouldn't be looking at. "It needs your attention. Now." My eyes are still fixed on Adrian's.His jaw tightened. He didn't look at me when he said, "Follow me," and walked toward the study, Tim trailing a step behind like a shadow that had learned to be afraid.I didn't wait to be invited and I don't want to be informed. So I followed them both, my bare feet silent against the marble, my heart doing something ugly and fast in my chest.The second Adrian saw me in the doorway, he turned to Tim. "You can go. We'll finish this on the phone."Tim nodded — too qui

  • LOVING THE WRONG BRIDE   CHAPTER 39:

    Isabella's POVMy heart won't stop pounding, hearing Adrian saying something that caught my attention.*He remembers someone.* The words keep circling back, tightening around my chest like a fist. Adrian said it so quietly, like the memory slipped out before he could stop it."Who?" I ask him again, my voice smaller than I want it to be.He looks at me with a smiling face; he really looks like he's trying to find something in my face. "It doesn't matter," he says. "Forget I said it." He was looking very serious and calm.But I can't forget. Not when it might be me.I want to grab his hands and shout it: It's me, Adrian. I was that girl. I helped you when no one else would. But the words stay locked behind my teeth, because what if I'm wrong? What if he's talking about someone else entirely, and I make a fool of myself chasing a ghost that was never mine to claim?In the next few minutes, I met Adrian in the dining room. So I sit beside him on the couch, closer than I've dared in weeks

  • LOVING THE WRONG BRIDE   CHAPTER 38:

    Adrian's POV The Ghost in Her EyesThe way I watched Isabella from across the dining room, and something about her stillness unsettled me.My mother had said many things cruel again, and I caught only the tail end of it, the venom in her tone unmistakable and Isabella just stood there. No flinch. No tears. No retreat.She simply nodded once, like she'd absorbed worse.That was the part that got to me. Not the insult itself, but the way Isabella swallowed it whole and kept her spine straight reminded me of the past.I have seen that before. Years ago, buried in my memory because remembering hurt too much."Adrian?" My mother's voice snapped me back. "Are you even listening to me?""I heard you," I said, though I hadn't. My eyes were still on Isabella, on the quiet way she turned and walked back toward the stairs like nothing had happened.I followed her gently.By the time I reached our room, she was already sitting on the edge of the bed, pulling the pins from her hair one by one, sl

    Isabella's POVThe Dinner Guests Saw EverythingThe dining hall was full that night, so every neighboring family from the estate row had been invited, silver gleaming under the chandeliers, laughter rising and falling around the long table. For once, dinner felt almost normal. Almost safe.I should have known better.Adrian's mother arrived late, sweeping in wrapped in dark red silk, greeting guest after guest with a smile so polished it could cut glass. She air-kissed cheeks, complimented dresses and laughed at jokes that weren't funny. By the time she reached to end of our table, I actually let myself relax.That was my mistake."Isabella." She said my name the way someone might name a stain on a tablecloth. "How wonderful that you could dress up for tonight."A few guests chuckled, unsure if it was a joke. I wasn't sure either — until she kept going."Tell me," she said, loud enough that conversations nearby began to quiet, "did you marry my son for love, or did you only marry to h

  • LOVING THE WRONG BRIDE   CHAPTER 36:

    Isabella's POVLooking at Adrian and his mother, Adrian's eyes were filled with fear, and his mother was curious to know what was going on with us.Adrian looked at me steadily, and we both looked at each other.“You are what's wrong, Adrian. You walk in here ready to accuse me of betrayal when all I've ever done since I came into this house protecting you,” I said and continued. “And you are afraid of what I might say about you. Why can't you tell your mother the truth?”Adrian looked at his mother before looking at me.” This is not what I'm asking,” he breathed.“Mom and Uncle Raymond all they want is to walk together.”Adrian's mother cleared her throat. "Sit down, Adrian." Her small voice cut through the hallway like a blade wrapped in silk.Adrian didn't move. I felt his hand tighten around mine, his jaw working like he was chewing on words he didn't dare say."This isn't about sitting down, Mother." His voice was low, controlled, but I could hear the storm underneath it. "What
