“Thank you,” I said to the guards as they all got back up and faced forward. Aeron took my hand and led me into the pack.

“Do they bow to every single guest they have at the border?” I asked Aeron, my eyes narrowed. “Maybe you orchestrated that so I would think you’re going to treat me right.”

Aeron replied with a chuckle. “You really put yourself on such a high pedestal. Do you seriously see me telling my guards to bow to you and go on one knee when you finally arrive? Perhaps we had a number of rehearsals as well.”

I felt heat creeping up my cheeks at the mockery. What was I thinking accusing him of doing something like that? Of course he wouldn’t.

“They heard from their alpha that you’re my mate, so they’re giving you the same respect they would give me. That’s all there is to it,” he said.

I nodded, refusing to look at him as shame enveloped me. “I’m sorry. I was just… I don’t exactly trust you. You walked into your brother’s pack and took me away without his permission, so you’re

I stood in front of the cell where the werewolf who had been caught sat in. It had been two days since I’d heard the news, and I found it hard to relax so I had to stay in the hospital for one more day.“Are you awake?” I asked as I watched the wolf sit there with his eyes closed, facing the door to the cell.He opened his eyes slowly and looked directly at me. After some seconds, there was a smile on his face. One that didn’t tell me he was happy to see me there. He was just happy I was there to listen to whatever he had to say.“Ah, Zara,” he said in a singsong tone. “I didn’t think you’d come. I’ve been waiting for you.”I turned to Darius in confusion. He looked back at me, just as confused, as he told me, “He’s never said anything about you before. In fact, he barely spoke to me.”I turned back to the wolf and cocked my head at him. “Do you have something you want to say specifically to me?”“It’s a message, if you will. Not from the people I work with but myself,” he said with a

I jerked awake with a gasp and found myself alone in a sterile room which I immediately knew as one of the rooms in the pack hospital.“I’m not dead,” was the first thing I whispered, slightly surprised at how easy it was for me to speak compared to how hard it was to even move my lips the last time I was conscious. The door opened, and Darius walked in with a fussy Aaron in his hands. As soon as he saw me sitting up, he grinned and rushed over to me. “How are you doing?”“Very good, actually,” I replied. “I don’t have a headache. I don’t feel as weak as I did, and I can speak properly now. What did the doctor say about it? What was wrong with me?”I carried Aaron out of his hands when Darius didn’t give me an answer and kissed him on the forehead. “Has he had anything since I was knocked out?”“Yes. The doctor advised that we wean you while you were unconscious,” he answered. “And we did a pretty solid job at keeping him from being bored. Sometimes he would lay on your chest until he

“I don’t quite remember how much of it they got from me,” Diane answered, but I could tell just by looking at her that she remembered vividly. She looked horrified to even tell me the answer, but I had to know even though I was more than scared to know.“Diane, I know you’re lying to me.” I grabbed her by the shoulders and forced her to look at me. “I know you know the answer. And trust me, the last thing I want to do is find out as well but I have to face this. If I want to find out how to stop this, I’ll have to find out just how much of this we’re looking at.”There were tears now brimming at Diane’s eyes as she shook her head.“I feel so ashamed to even think about it. I was blinded by my rage and—”“I don’t care about that, Diane!” I yelled at her. “How much of it did you give to the humans?”She finally raised her head to look into my eyes, and I hated what I was about to hear next. I hated how my stomach twisted into knots.“I really don’t know how much of it was in the bag, bu

“Everything is falling apart,” I heard Darius mutter as he paced back and forth in the bedroom.“Can we just sit and talk about this for a minute?” I asked, gesturing at the bed for him to sit.“What haven’t we done, Zara?” He asked as his frustration started to boil over. “How many more times are we going to sit down and talk about it? We thought we had the witches on our side, and look at it now,”“I told you that the witches told me we had made a new enemy. It’s my fault for not pressing and asking them to tell me everything. They probably knew the whole time that the humans were coming for us. That happened way before they agreed to be on our side.”“None of this is your fault, Zara. If they really were on our side, they would have told you about the humans this whole time. At this point, who exactly do we trust and who do we suspect? How are we supposed to trust that the vampires won’t attack us when they get the chance?”“I’ll go talk to the witches. I’ll ask them everything, an

For a moment, Darius looked at me as if I had popped another head out of my shoulders. Then, he averted his eyes and looked down at the table with a sigh.“I actually don’t know what to do in that aspect, Zara. You know I would have no problem with that, but you have to remember that we’re going to be bringing more people into the pack. Which means we’ll have more people to take care of. More people means more land mass. And this pack is bigger than Aeron’s.”He was right about his pack being bigger, but it didn’t mean that Aeron’s pack couldn’t accommodate us.“I know you’re right about that, and it would be much comfortable if they were to come here. But we have to think about the possibility that they won’t agree to our offer. You heard them. They have no problem with you leading them, but they have a problem with leaving their home.”“And what about my people?” He questioned. “A lot of them have families that have been buried here as well. My parents were buried here. Don’t you th

“I believe Darius and I have come to a middle ground on this,” Tyrell said just as Deirdre and I walked into the throne room.I turned to Darius to gauge where we stood with Tyrell, and from the smile on his face, I knew he had done it. He was successful in getting Tyrell on our side.“It’s time for us to go back to the pack. We don’t exactly leave our pack in the hands of others, especially when they’re that many. They have a hard time living each other when they’re that much,” Tyrell informed as he placed a hand on Deirdre’s waist and led her away.“It would be a total honor to have you over at the pack sometime, Zara. I can show you around. It gets boring being the Luna who’s trapped in the house because somebody doesn’t want her leaving.” She glared at Tyrell as she said this.“I’ll find some time to come. I’ll let you know first, of course,” I said with a genuine smile. It would be kind to have a friend who understood the same struggles of being a Luna that I did.“Absolutely! Ma
