“That’s right,” the vampire in front of me said, his grin even wider than before. “We’re vampires. And if I’m not mistaken, you must be Zara.”

It was impossible. At least that’s what people had been saying. Vampires were supposed to be extinct. There had been a great war between werewolves and vampires. The werewolves ended up overpowering the vampires in numbers and brutal strength, killing every single one of them.

“You’re not supposed to exist,” I said before I could get the chance to stop myself. I tried to take a step back, but there was a presence behind me. I knew they had me surrounded and there was no use.

“And yet we do.” The vampire shrugged in response. “My name is Smith, by the way. Get used to that name. You’ll be seeing a lot more of me when we get out of here.”

I had no answer to any of my questions. I didn’t know how and why vampires still lived. I didn’t know why they were after me. I didn’t know why they thought they could come in here and take me.

Smith studied me for a long, silent moment. For a second, I feared I had been caught in my lie before I even found a way forward.“Just yesterday, you were telling me you didn’t know anything about it. You were so adamant about it as well. What changed?” He asked.“Well, I thought about it when you left. I remembered…” I sighed, an act to make him believe I was recollecting my thoughts. I was in deep and I had him hooked. I knew it. I just had to push through.“When I was a part of the rogue wolves, they made me join the warriors. We used to train to fight with different skills. I was good at all of them. The trainer called me remarkable, and we soon… We soon started to fight each other to gauge our strengths and weaknesses.”There was a slight change in Smith’s posture now. He was leaning forward, but not too much. He didn’t want me to know how interested he was, but I was trained to also catch if my lie was working.I had Gray to thank for everything I was using to survive so far.“

“Is that what this is all about?” I asked with raised brows, refusing to believe he was being serious. Everything I had been through had been because of something I didn’t even believe, let alone have knowledge about.“I’m not playing any kind of game with you. Not anymore, Zara.” The look on his face told me he was not bluffing. “I don’t care if you’re pregnant right now. You’ll tell me everything you know right now.”I sat up and cleared my throat as I stared at him in the eyes and hoped I wasn’t making a mistake by being too confident.“If you’re asking me what I know about being the Moon Child, I’ll just tell you right now that I know nothing.”Silence passed between us, save for the other vampires outside. I could hear my own heartbeat, and I was sure he could hear it too. Maybe even better than I could, from everything I’d heard about vampires.“I told you before we got here that if you cooperated, there would be no need to keep you here longer than you need to be,” he reminded

“Are you being serious?” Aeron asked with a raised brow after I told him I knew who to choose.I wasn’t serious about that, but he didn’t have to know about it. Besides, I would have to study the reaction of each brother to figure out who was thinking more about how I felt about it than on the rivalry they had.“I am, Aeron,” I confirmed, not surprised at the scoff he responded with.“And here I thought bringing you here and letting you live the life you were meant to live after my brother practically abandoned you was enough for you to figure out who cared more about you. You still have to make a choice?”I frowned at him, tilting my head as I suddenly wondered why he was this worked up. I didn’t say anything about picking his brother over him. If anything, he had to be confident that I would choose him.“I didn’t say it was much of a competition, Aeron. I said I had made my decision, and it could be you. Aren’t you the same person who taught me to think for myself?”As if recalling

Time seemed to stop in the hospital as the doctor and I stared at each other. Her smile was glued to her face, probably from being the first to know that I was pregnant. My jaw was dropped as I didn’t know what to say.“Are you sure?” I knew how ridiculous it was to ask a doctor if she was sure I was truly pregnant, but I also knew how ridiculous it sounded that I was carrying a child. That was not something I had thought about.“Very sure. I tested twice for good measure. I’m sure the alpha would be happy to hear the news. Right now, I need you to take things slow and take care of yourself. The baby is still in its early stages, which is the most vulnerable time.”I sighed, standing up and feeling like I would fall over face first.“Thank you, doctor. I’ll talk to the alpha about this,” I told her.I was going to talk to Aeron, sure, but not now. Not when I wasn’t sure who the father was. It could be Aeron’s just as much as it could be Darius’s.“Oh goddess,” I whispered to myself wh

I was in heat. If there was one thing I knew about being in heat, it was that the last person you wanted to be with if you didn’t want to mate with anyone was your mate. And Aeron was standing right there, holding on to me and trying to keep me steady.“You have to take deep breaths. I’ll run some cold bath water for you,” he said as he led me up the stairs and into the room.I didn’t need him to tell me to take off my clothes before I took them off. I noticed him hesitate a bit when he saw me in nothing but my undergarments, and it took everything in me not to act on his reaction.“Aeron, please… I don’t think I can do this,” I told him, bringing him back to his senses as he rushed into the bathroom.I didn’t know what I was begging him for. I didn’t know what I told him I couldn’t do. Maybe I couldn’t hold out for much longer. But I wasn’t even in the right state of mind.“The water is cold and ready. Come in!” I heard him call out. I hurried into the bathroom and sat in the tub. Th

After the first dinner I had with Aeron where he revealed his true feelings, I didn’t see the need to ask him anything about the rogues or his brother anymore.Darius still didn’t come. It had been three days since I was brought to the pack. Three days since the rumors began to circulate that the alpha had a new mate.“Are you Zara, the new luna?” One of the pack members asked me one afternoon as I sat under a tree to take my time and think about what I wanted to do with myself.“I wouldn’t say I’m the new luna exactly, but I am mated to the alpha,” I confirmed as she sat beside me. This was very much unlike the last encounter I had with the lady back in Darius’s pack.“I’m Penny,” she introduced. “I’ve heard so much about you, but I was a bit scared to come and see if the rumors were true. I thought you wouldn’t like anyone bothering you. You haven’t been out much.”“Well, I’m trying to get used to the place.” I shrugged. “Just so much going on, and it’s all happening so fast.”I did

I had asked Aeron about three times what he meant when he said Darius wouldn’t be coming for me at all. He didn’t give me an answer. I was shown to my personal bedroom, which was just as big as the one back in Darius’s house.“I have nothing to wear,” I said to him, finding something to set my eyes on so I wouldn’t look at him. I settled on the white curtains that swayed with the night breeze.“I knew that. I made plans before I left. There are clothes tailored to you in the closet. You don’t have to worry. Take a shower, join me for dinner if you’d like,” he said.I heard his footsteps retreat and the door close before I got the courage to leave. The first place I went was the closet, opening the doors and finding rows and rows of clothing. They all looked so…perfect. Not too big for me, but not too tight as well.I found a pair of white shorts and a matching shirt that I could sleep in, setting them down on the bed.“What’s in it for him?” I asked, wondering what Aeron could possibl

“Thank you,” I said to the guards as they all got back up and faced forward. Aeron took my hand and led me into the pack.“Do they bow to every single guest they have at the border?” I asked Aeron, my eyes narrowed. “Maybe you orchestrated that so I would think you’re going to treat me right.”Aeron replied with a chuckle. “You really put yourself on such a high pedestal. Do you seriously see me telling my guards to bow to you and go on one knee when you finally arrive? Perhaps we had a number of rehearsals as well.”I felt heat creeping up my cheeks at the mockery. What was I thinking accusing him of doing something like that? Of course he wouldn’t.“They heard from their alpha that you’re my mate, so they’re giving you the same respect they would give me. That’s all there is to it,” he said.I nodded, refusing to look at him as shame enveloped me. “I’m sorry. I was just… I don’t exactly trust you. You walked into your brother’s pack and took me away without his permission, so you’re
