Chapter 2

Author: Fishing Boat
I watched from the side, feeling an unbearable pain in my chest. Daisy was only six years old, yet she had already learned how to read people's moods, just to keep Connor in her life as her father.

Connor had two chances left.

That night, Daisy didn't cry. She just asked me, "Mommy, you said Daddy has trouble showing emotions and doesn't know how to love us… But why does he like Hazel so much? Do you think that… maybe one day, he'll like me the way he likes Hazel?"

Facing her hopeful gaze, I suddenly felt stumped, not knowing how to respond. Was I supposed to tell her that Faye Snyder and Hazel were Connor's exceptions?

Faye was his "one that got away", and Hazel was Faye's daughter. Those two didn't have to do anything to earn Connor's affection, while Daisy and I couldn't melt the coldness in his heart no matter how hard we tried.

His study was filled with gifts from Daisy and me, but he never looked at them. They just sat there in the corners collecting dust. Yet, he treasured Hazel's gifts like they were made of gold.

I didn't want to lie to Daisy, so I started thinking about how to explain without hurting her. Before I could say anything, she hugged me in silence, like she already understood.

I made another mental note that night, thinking, "Connor, you have two chances left."

After that day, Daisy truly never stepped foot into Connor's study again. She acted like she didn't care as much anymore, but whenever Connor came home, her eyes still instinctively trailed after him.

However, whenever he tried to speak to her, she'd shrink back and look terrified. Seeing that, he stopped trying and would just walk away without another word.

Then came Daisy's birthday. She finally built up the courage to ask, "Daddy, can you spend my birthday with me?"

Connor was fiddling with the crooked friendship bracelet on his bookshelf when he heard her question. He frowned and asked, "When's your birthday again?"

Even though he didn't remember, Daisy wasn't hurt. Instead, she answered sincerely, "My birthday's the day after tomorrow. Can we celebrate it together, Daddy?"

Connor thought for a moment and shook his head. "I've got something going on that day."

Hearing this answer, Daisy didn't cry or throw a tantrum. She just lowered her head and softly defended him, "Daddy works really hard, and I should try to be more understanding."

She turned to me and suggested, "Mommy, let's celebrate with Grandma instead."

As I looked at how sweet and mature she was trying to be, my heart ached all over again. I pulled her into my arms and said, "Okay. We'll celebrate with Grandma."

When her birthday came, Daisy tried her best to hide her disappointment. Even so, my mother-in-law, Esther Chambers, still noticed something was wrong. "Sweet Daisy, why do you look so sad? Did someone upset you? Tell me."

Daisy shook her head vigorously. "I'm not sad."

Esther gently rubbed her head and asked, "Let me guess… Is it because Daddy didn't come, and you miss him?"

Daisy froze when Esther hit the mark. She didn't know how to argue with that, so she just kept defending Connor, saying, "Daddy's just really busy. Please don't blame him, Grandma."

Esthe replied, "Daisy, you're such a good girl. How could your daddy not show up for your birthday? I'll call him right now. He wouldn't dare ignore me."

I saw the hope flash back into Daisy's eyes. She asked eagerly, "Will he really come?"

Esther pretended to scold Connor on the phone, though she never actually dialed. However, Daisy didn't notice, and her little face turned rosy with joy.

Faye rushed toward me to grab my phone. Weighed down by the wedding dress, I couldn't move quickly and was about to be scratched by her sharp nails.A hand shot out and grabbed Faye's arm. It was the first time I'd seen such a frightening expression on Oliver's face as he roughly threw Faye's arm aside, growling, "My wife isn't someone you get to lay a hand on!"Seeing Oliver, Jimmy immediately shrank back and apologized, "Mr. Gardner, what a coincidence! I had no idea you and your fiancée were here. Please forgive us. It's a total misunderstanding!"He pushed down on Faye's head and scolded her, "What are you looking at? Hurry up and apologize to Mr. and Mrs. Gardner!" Faye's eyes were filled with disbelief. Her expression seemed to say, "How is it that even the man Averie randomly found is better than mine?""Averie, I want you dead!" Faye suddenly lunged to attack me, catching Oliver off guard. When I heard the sound of a craft knife cutting through the skin, I felt no pain.

Oliver had worked tirelessly all week to clear his schedule, just so he could spend the entire weekend taking Daisy out to have fun. While Daisy and I were buying ice cream, we ran into someone completely unexpected—Connor. He wasn't in a suit like usual—his shoulders slumped, his hair had grown long enough to cover part of his face, and a patchy beard lined his jaw. He looked worn out, like someone who hadn't slept in days. But the moment he saw me and Daisy, life seemed to return to his eyes. He jogged toward us, voice trembling with relief as he said, "Averie, Daisy… I finally found you two."However, Daisy didn't light up or run to him like she once would have. Instead, she stepped back and hid behind Oliver.Connor called out, "Daisy, it's me—Daddy!"She didn't even peek out. Her voice was sharp and certain as she shouted, "You're not my daddy! Daddy Oliver is my daddy now!"Connor's face twisted through a whole storm of emotions. And I thought, for the first time, he tru

Ten days later, on the promised delivery date, I didn't release the painting. I delayed it by a day on purpose. That same day, I watched Connor hold a press conference. He publicly apologized and announced that the product launch had to be postponed due to an internal error. He made it clear that Faye, the one who faked her identity, would bear the full responsibility for the financial loss caused by the delay. That afternoon, just as I finished baking cookies with Daisy in the kitchen, my phone started blowing up with notifications—Faye had sent a storm of furious messages."AH, you've never missed a release date before! Why did you delay this time? You did this on purpose, didn't you?" "You made me lose my fiancé and my job! I'll never forgive you!"Well, what could I say? Women's intuition could be terrifyingly accurate. Yes, I did it on purpose. The rest of the messages were from Connor, and he sounded sincere this time. "AH, I made a terrible mistake. I mistook someone els

"Since this matter is settled, Daisy and I will get the certificate and leave," I said nonchalantly.Connor's agitated expression gradually calmed down. He let out a deep breath and nodded. "That's fine. Averie, you and Daisy go home first, and I'll handle things here."I sneered inwardly. Yes, Daisy and I were indeed going home, but not to wait for him. We were going home to pack and leave.Oliver followed us out and offered, "Let me drive you and Daisy home."In the past, I would've politely declined. I'd always put Connor's feelings first, keeping my distance from any man who wasn't him. This time, I nodded. If Connor had never once taken the time to drive Daisy and me home, why shouldn't I accept a ride from a man who did?"Thank you, Oliver."He looked a little stunned, as if he wasn't sure he heard me right. On the way home, he kept checking in on Daisy, chatting with her, and making her laugh until she was giggling nonstop. When we reached our building, Daisy was reluct

Someone said, "Don't be ridiculous. Mr. Reeves is known for being fair. He's just doing his job here."Another jabbed, "Fair? Since when does 'doing your job' mean yelling at your own daughter while cuddling someone else's?"The crowd's whispers grew sharper, and Connor's brows furrowed. Meanwhile, Oliver just gave a calm, knowing smile and pulled out a memory card from his pocket. He said, "I'm the organizer for this competition, and I have security footage that proves Daisy didn't plagiarize."As Oliver extended the card, Hazel shrank deeper into Connor's arms, and Faye's expression changed instantly. She tried to smooth things over, turning to Connor. "There's really no need to go that far. I just wanted Daisy to apologize and hand the first-place award over to Hazel. That's all.""In your dreams!" I snapped, stepping up beside Oliver and snatching the card from his hand. Then, I glared at Connor—a warning, sharp and clear. "Daisy didn't copy a thing, and I'll never let her

Daisy and I would never forgive Connor—ever again.Just as I was still racking my brain on how to prove Daisy didn't plagiarize, a firm male voice suddenly broke the heavy silence. "What plagiarism? I can prove Daisy didn't copy anyone's work!"A casually dressed but tall man approached, and Daisy's eyes lit up. She immediately recognized him. "Mr. Gardner!"It was Oliver Gardner, one of my old high school classmates. Back then, he came from a struggling family and sometimes didn't even have enough for lunch. I had secretly helped him, and once he found out, he promised to repay me someday. We hadn't seen each other since graduation until I ran into him again two years ago. After learning I had a daughter, Oliver often sent Daisy toys and accessories like barrettes. There was barely a trace of Connor in Daisy's room, but Oliver's gifts were everywhere. So, it made sense that she recognized him immediately.Oliver didn't launch into explanations. The first thing he did was ge
