Chapter 4

The bell finally rang for break after fourth period, and students spilled out of class with loud chatter and excitement. Annie, more than anyone, felt relieved—it had been four straight classes of Damien constantly disturbing her, and she was just about ready to lose her cool.

She and her friends made their way to the cafeteria, happily serving themselves food. Wednesdays were the best; the school served their most delicious meals then, and everyone looked forward to it.

Once they settled into their usual spot, Emelia and her ever-present minions strutted in. As always, she was loud, rude, and full of herself. She made her way straight to her boyfriend Mark, captain of the basketball team, and acted like they were the school’s “perfect couple.” Annie rolled her eyes so hard she thought they might get stuck. Perfect couple, my ass. Bleegh. 🤮

As Annie ate, she noticed Damien standing across the cafeteria, searching for a place to sit. Their eyes met for a split second before Annie quickly tossed her hair over her face to hide. Her friends exchanged curious glances, wondering what was going on with her.

When they turned and saw Damien, they immediately understood.

“Hi guys, can I sit with you?” Damien asked, looking hopeful.

“Sure!” Becky and Sussy chimed at the same time, practically glowing as they smiled at him.

Annie nearly choked. “Huh? No way! You can’t sit here at all.”

Damien tilted his head, pretending to look hurt. “But why, stranger?”

“I have a name. It’s Annie,” she snapped.

“Okay, Annie… can I sit here now?”

“No. You can’t.”

“But I said your name,” he argued, his tone almost playful. “I don’t really have any friends here. You’re the only one I know. Pretty please?”

Becky and Sussy melted instantly. “Awww,” they said together.

“Annie, he’s right,” Becky nudged. “Let him sit with us.”

“Yeah,” Sussy agreed, nodding eagerly.

Annie’s face tightened. “Oh my gosh, did you two already forget what I told you he did to me yesterday?”

That made her friends pause. Their smiles dropped, and they turned back to Damien.

“Sorry, Damien, but what you did to our girl wasn’t cool,” Becky said firmly.

Damien raised his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay. I’m sorry. I didn’t know I hurt your feelings.”

Annie crossed her arms. “Hold up—you didn’t hurt my feelings. In fact, I don’t even care about it anymore.”

Damien’s eyes lit up. “Really?” He looked like he might jump for joy. “So can I sit with you now?”

“No!” Annie shot back without hesitation.

The smile fell from his face. Looking dejected, Damien gave a small nod and walked away. Becky and Sussy mouthed a quick sorry after him.

Once he was gone, Becky leaned toward Annie. “You know, you could’ve just let him sit. Especially if you’re really not bothered about it anymore.”

Sussy quickly agreed. “Yeah, Annie. Becky’s right.”

Annie groaned, dropping her fork. “Ugh, why did you two have to put it that way? Now I feel bad.”

Chapter 66The cabin felt colder after Claire’s departure, as though she had taken all the warmth with her. Annie stood rooted in the middle of the room, her hands limp at her sides, her mind replaying every second of what had just happened.Sussy sniffled loudly, dragging her blanket over her head like it could hide the hurt. Becky leaned forward on her knees, staring blankly at the floorboards, while Elena sat in silence, her notebook balanced in her lap but unopened. The air was thick with everything unsaid. Finally, Becky’s voice broke the silence. “We should go after her.”Sussy shot up from her bed, eyes rimmed with tears. “And say what? She doesn’t want us near her. You heard her—she can’t even look at us!”“But if she talks to Mr. Emerald…” Becky swallowed hard. “If she changes rooms, it’ll be permanent. It won’t just be a fight. It’ll mean she’s really gone.”Annie finally moved, sinking onto her bed. Her chest

Chapter 65 Annie’s heart sank as she watched Claire storm out of the dining hall, leaving her food untouched, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. The whispers didn’t matter anymore—the laughter, the smirks, the phones flashing. None of it cut as deep as the look on Claire’s face before she left.Without thinking, Annie shot up from the table. “Claire—wait!”Becky and Sussy exchanged quick glances, then followed. Even Elena, though slower and clearly unsure what was going on, trailed after them, clutching her notebook to her chest. The four of them hurried across camp, weaving through groups of students who had already heard the rumor and were whispering behind their hands. Annie’s legs moved on instinct, her chest tight. She couldn’t let Claire disappear without explaining—except she had no idea what she would even say.“Claire!” Annie called again, her voice cracking. But Claire didn’t slow. She only walked f

Chapter 64 The sun was high by the time the students trailed back into camp, dusty sneakers crunching over gravel paths. The forest’s cool shade had been left behind, replaced by the hum of cicadas and the warm shimmer of midday heat.Annie walked with Elena at her side, the two of them falling into step with Becky, Sussy, and Claire. Their laughter carried ahead—Sussy was dramatically reenacting how she’d “almost died” tripping over a root, while Claire rolled her eyes so hard it was a miracle they didn’t get stuck. To anyone else, it looked like an ordinary return from the hike. But Annie’s chest still buzzed with the secret weight of her meeting with Damien. She held it close, like something fragile. Nobody could know. Not yet.At least, that was what she believed. The dining hall was alive with noise when they entered. Trays clattered, chairs scraped against the floor, and the smell of beans, rice, and grilled chicken fille

Chapter 63 The morning light spilled through the tall cabin window, painting golden stripes across Annie’s bed. Birds chirped outside, and the soft chatter of students waking up drifted through the air. Annie rubbed her eyes, sitting up slowly. For a moment, she’d almost forgotten about Damien’s message still waiting on her phone. But the cheerful hum of camp life quickly pulled her back. “Up, sleepyhead!” Sussy sang, already dressed in shorts and a bright top. She stood in front of the mirror, braiding her hair like she was preparing for a photoshoot. “Too early,” Annie muttered, though a smile tugged at her lips. Becky was already folding her blanket with military precision. “Breakfast in twenty minutes. If you don’t hurry, you’ll be last in line.” Claire slipped on her sneakers without a word, earbuds hanging around her neck. Elena,

Chapter 62 The buses rolled to a stop in front of the camp center just as the afternoon sun dipped lower, painting the sky with streaks of gold and rose. A soft breeze rustled through the tall pine trees that framed the grounds, carrying with it the earthy scent of grass and soil.Students spilled out in waves, dragging bags, laughing, and stretching their legs after the long ride. Teachers stood near the entrance, calling out instructions above the chatter and pointing toward the main hall. The camp spread out beautifully: rows of wooden cabins tucked between trees, gravel paths winding toward a wide dining hall, a fire pit at the center of the grounds, and a game field stretching out to the side. Birds darted through the air, their wings catching the light, and the distant sound of water flowing from a stream added to the sense of peace.Inside the main hall, teachers explained the rules: students were free to pick their roommates, but groups h

Chapter 61 The morning air was cool and quiet when Annie rolled over in bed, blinking against the soft light slipping through her curtains. Her phone buzzed against the nightstand, and she reached for it. Already, a group chat with Becky and Sussy was lighting up with unread messages. She sighed, half-dreading the energy Sussy would surely bring this early. Annie quickly typed, fingers tapping nervously: Annie: Hey guys. I wanted to tell you something before we meet Damien today. Becky: You mean about yesterday? Annie: Yeah. I told him we had proof. Not everything, not the details, just that we’ve got something real. He didn’t ask for specifics, but I could tell he believed me. Sussy: Wait wait wait 😳😳. You’re saying Damien is in on this now?? Annie: Kinda. I texted him last night. Told him we need to meet today to plan. He agreed. There was a lo
