Chapter 4

Author: Call and I'll Come
"Sienna, stop right there!"

Behind me, a chair crashed over as Levi came after me.

In the restaurant's long hallway, he grabbed my wrist.

"Have you lost your mind? Everyone's giving you a way out, and you insist on making a scene?"

He was holding back his anger, his chest heaving.

"I told you, all you had to do was drink that glass and I'd forgive you. Tessa would even leave. What more do you want?

"You're thirty, Sienna! Who besides me could put up with your boring, rigid personality?"

Tessa ran out after us, her eyes red, and reached for the hem of Levi's shirt.

"Levi, don't yell at Sienna. It's all my fault. I'll take the necklace off and give it to her right now..."

As she spoke, she went to undo the clasp at her neck, but she fumbled with it for ages and couldn't get it open, tears of frustration spilling over.

Levi pressed her hand down, his voice tender. "Don't. You don't take back a gift once it's given."

He turned to me, his eyes cold.

"Sienna, if you dare walk out that door today, don't ever expect me to come after you again!"

"You're right."

I looked at Levi, my voice barely above a whisper.

"So I'm letting you go."

Bit by bit, I pried his fingers loose, then calmly shook off his hand.

Levi froze.

He probably hadn't expected that reaction. Something like panic flashed through his eyes, there and gone.

Right then, the phone in my pocket rang.

It was the animal hospital.

I answered. Hannah, one of the nurses, spoke softly on the other end, her voice full of apology.

"Ms. Cole, I'm so sorry. We couldn't save Biscuit. He just passed.

"Would you like to come see him one last time?"

The hallway lights were glaring.

I gripped my phone as the tears finally broke loose, big drops rolling down my face without a single sound.

Levi watched me cry and assumed his words had made me give in.

His expression eased, and his voice softened.

"All right, what are you crying for? As long as you stop watching my every move, I'll still marry you."

I ignored him.

I turned and, one heavy step at a time, walked out of the restaurant.

I didn't go back to that home.

I took a cab to the animal hospital alone and found Biscuit lying on a steel table, already stiff.

I held his cold body and sat in the empty treatment room all night.

Early the next morning, I took care of the cremation paperwork by myself.

All that was left of Biscuit fit in a small box of ashes, and I held it tight against my chest.

While Levi was still at work and Tessa was out, I went back to the apartment one last time.

I called a moving company.

Honestly, I didn't have much.

For years, all my energy had gone into Levi. I bought him designer suits and imported stomach medicine, while I barely owned a decent outfit myself.

I packed up the few old clothes and books that were mine.

At the entryway, I took the spare key out of my bag.

There was a framed photo on the shoe cabinet.

It was from seven years ago: Levi holding Biscuit as a month-old puppy, me leaning on his shoulder. The three of us, our little family.

The Levi in that photo smiled so openly, so purely.

I picked up the frame and tossed it into the trash can beside the cabinet, along with the key.

The door slammed shut.

It shut out seven years of my youth, along with all the foolishness and bitterness that came with them.

Levi's face went deathly pale.He set the puppy down abruptly, and with a thud, dropped to his knees in front of me.He clutched the hem of my clay-spattered denim apron and looked up at me."Sienna, I know I was wrong. I really do."I was such a jerk. I just got so used to having you around that I thought you'd never leave..."I used Tessa to make you mad because I wanted proof that you cared. I just wanted to see you get jealous over me..."He rambled on, laying his twisted mind bare, crying so hard his whole body shook."Give me one more chance. Just one."Let me spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Please, Sienna, don't give up on me..."The streetlight stretched his shadow out long and pitiful.I looked at him kneeling in front of me.A year ago—no, even six months ago—if he'd said a single kind word to me, I would've thrown myself into his arms without hesitation and forgiven him for everything. But now, I reached out and, little by little, gently brushed hi

  • Late Remorse   Chapter 9

One evening in early winter, the temperature plunged. The sea breeze turned biting.I put away the carving tools on the studio counter and got ready to pull down the rolling door and close up.The moment I turned around, I froze.Someone was standing under the streetlight outside. It was Levi.I barely recognized him. He'd lost so much weight he looked like a different person. The black coat that used to fit him perfectly hung off his frame. His eyes were sunken and bloodshot, and his jaw was covered in dark stubble. There was no trace left of the composed, superior executive he used to be.He stood in the cold wind, shivering. And there was a strange bulge inside his coat. When he saw me turn around, he strode toward me.He unzipped his coat and pulled out a puppy.A golden retriever puppy. He couldn't have been more than a month or two old, a fluffy little thing that looked exactly like Biscuit had as a puppy.Levi looked at me, and his eyes went red.His voice was h

  • Late Remorse   Chapter 8

Sienna's POVIn my second month after leaving Levi, I settled in Aurelia, a slow-paced little town on the coast. There was no bone-chilling wind here, only a warm sea breeze that tasted of salt. With my savings, I rented a little bungalow with a yard by the water. There was a big lemon tree in the yard.I buried Biscuit's ashes beneath it.Every morning when I got up, I filled a pitcher with fresh water and poured it over the roots."Morning, Biscuit. The breeze off the ocean's nice and warm today. Get plenty of sun."I ran my hand over the rough bark as I spoke softly.I hadn't cried since.I fixed up the bungalow and opened a ceramics studio of my own.I picked up the carving tools and clay I'd set aside for seven years.I cut off the waist-length hair I'd grown out for years. It had been Levi's favorite length. He'd said long hair made a woman look gentle.I threw out all the plain, demure dresses in my suitcase. In their place, I wore loose linen shirts, a denim apron

Levi returned to the empty apartment. He didn't turn on the lights. In the glow of the streetlights outside, he threw himself onto the couch. It was too quiet. He patted his pocket for a cigarette, only to find the pack empty. He leaned forward and pulled open the coffee table drawer, looking for a spare pack.He didn't find any cigarettes. Instead, his hand landed on a thick hardcover notebook.Levi took it out and, by the light of his phone's flashlight, opened it to the first page.It was a scrapbook. It was full of clippings and printouts, with Sienna's neat handwriting all over the margins. The first section was nothing but recipes for his favorite dishes."Levi won't eat cilantro. Cut the green onions into big pieces so he can pick them out.""He loves barbecue ribs, but not too sweet. Add extra apple cider vinegar."Further in, it was all guides for managing his stomach condition."Prilosec: take it thirty minutes before meals.""After he drinks with clients, alwa

Levi drove like a madman to Sienna's company.Ignoring the security guards trying to stop him, he charged straight into the design department.Sienna's desk had been cleared, and a new hire he didn't recognize was sitting at it."Where's Sienna? Get her out here!" Levi shouted, his eyes bloodshot. The head of HR walked over, frowning at him."Mr. Maddox, Sienna turned in her resignation a week ago. She finished handing over her work and left three days ago."Levi froze.A week ago. That meant that before Biscuit got sick, before her thirtieth birthday, she'd already been getting ready to leave. She wasn't throwing a tantrum. She'd been methodically, step by step, cutting herself out of his life for good.Levi walked out of the building in a daze and into the dim underground parking garage. At some point, Tessa had followed him there. She trotted after him in her high heels and hooked her arm through his again. She seemed completely oblivious to his mood, still whining in

  • Late Remorse   Chapter 5

Third-person POVLevi figured Sienna was just throwing a tantrum.Over the past five years, she'd threatened to break up plenty of times. The worst time, she'd actually packed her suitcase and dragged it all the way to the elevator. But he'd just stood in the doorway and said coldly, "If you get in that elevator today, don't ever come back."Sienna had burst into tears on the spot. She'd dragged the suitcase back inside and cooked him dinner, crying the whole time.So this time, Levi wasn't worried in the slightest. He even believed that pouring out the liquor at the restaurant was just an extreme move to force him to back down."Let her stew for a couple of days. She'll come crawling back on her own," he told Jason. For three days, he deliberately stayed away from the apartment and didn't send Sienna a single message. Then, on the afternoon of the third day, Tessa cut her finger opening a package at the office. She held up her finger, a bead of blood welling on it, and whin
