Chapter 89

Monet Palmer watched the pale yellow and red lights cut through the darkened horizon, wondering if the new day would magically heal all of the troubles she was having. All night she hadn’t slept a wink. She’d sat curled on the window seat, forehead resting against the glass, her mind anything but quiet.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Kyle’s face—bruised, bloodied, the beeping monitors a cruel reminder that he was still tethered to a fight he hadn’t chosen. Then Richard’s voice would cut through, rough and desperate, the memory of his grip on her arms, his fury barely held in check. Between the two men, her heart felt like a rope pulled taut, fraying at the edges.

The town was waking now. A mail truck rumbled down the street, headlights fading with distance. Somewhere, a jogger’s shoes slapped against the pavement. The ordinary rhythm of life moved on, indifferent to the storm consuming her.

She drew her knees tighter to her chest, biting down on the inside of her lip until sh

“My life’s just veering out of control,” Richard muttered, the ice in his tumbler clinking viciously against the glass. “Where did it all go wrong for me?”Maxwell shrugged his broad shoulders, tossing back his drink in one swallow while Richard’s still remained untouched. His brother had shown up—unannounced—shortly after he and George had finally calmed Monet from exploding over the punch incident.“It all went wrong when you made the choice to move on.”Maxwell toed off one cowboy boot, barefoot and careless. “If you’d kept Monet as just the ‘help,’ Juliet never would’ve filed for custody of the children.”Richard sighed deeply, staring at the slow melt of ice in his glass. “There was absolutely no way I could’ve kept Monet as the nanny forever.”His voice dropped, almost to himself. “She’s always been more than just the nanny. Always.”Maxwell frowned, his gaze cutting sharp. “I never believed I asked.” He leaned forward, elbows braced on his knees. “But tell me—before Kyle, befor

The smoke detector shrieked overhead, but neither of them moved. The air between them was already scorched enough. Then, three sharp knocks rattled against the front door. They both froze.Richard’s head jerked toward the sound, jaw still locked tight. Monet blinked, her hands still trembling around the spatula. The silence between them was ruptured, suspended, until the knock came again—harder this time, insistent.Richard swore under his breath, Monet stayed rooted to the spot, her chest heaving, her eyes burning as the smoke detector kept wailing. The knock came again, sharp and more forceful. Richard cursed under his breath, but his steps were clipped as he crossed to the door and yanked it open.George Clayton Jr. stood there, pressed and polished as ever, but the bruise still ghosted along his jaw. His eyes went first to Richard, then past him into the kitchen where Monet stood, a knife forgotten on the cutting board.“George?” she asked softly, relief blooming in her voice. “W

The ride home was suffocatingly silent. The city blurred past Monet’s window, a ribbon of lights and shadows she barely registered. Richard’s hands stayed clenched around the wheel, his knuckles pale against the leather, but he didn’t speak, didn’t even look at her.By the time they pulled into the Abbott driveway, Monet’s nerves were raw, frayed to threads. She followed him inside, each footstep sounding too loud against the hush of the house. Dee must’ve already tucked Meredith and Carter in; the place was dark, save for the soft glow of the hallway sconces.Richard tossed his keys onto the console table, the sharp clatter making her flinch. He didn’t remove his jacket, didn’t loosen his shirt further. He turned, his gaze locking onto her like a man cornering a truth he couldn’t avoid.“So,” he said, his voice calm in the way thunder sometimes is before it splits the sky. “Tell me. What did he say to you?”Monet’s throat tightened. She hadn’t expected the question to come so quickly

The steady beep of the monitor filled the hospital room, each pulse pricking at Monet’s nerves. She stood in the doorway longer than she meant to, watching the rise and fall of Kyle’s chest. His face was a map of bruises, swelling pulling at familiar lines until he looked both like himself and someone she barely recognized. When his eyes opened, they locked on her instantly, sharp even through the haze of pain.“You finally came,” he murmured, voice rough. Her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag. “I wasn’t sure if I should.”A hollow laugh broke from him, more breath than sound. “You shouldn’t have. Not if all you’ve got to offer me is pity.”“It’s not pity,” she said quickly, stepping closer to the bed. “Kyle, I just—”“You just what?” His gaze pinned her, raw and unflinching. “You just left me. You chose him. After everything. Do you know what it feels like, lying here, knowing you belong to him now?” His voice cracked, but his eyes didn’t waver. “Do you even care?”Monet’

Monet barely had time to whisper, “Please, just tell me how bad it is—” before the phone was wrenched from her hand.Richard’s grip swallowed it whole, his thumb killing the call with a single, brutal press. His face set in granite. The silence that followed was deafening. Monet’s pulse hammered in her ears, her fingers still hovering in the air as though she could snatch the phone back.“What the hell is wrong with you?” she hissed, stepping toward him. “That was the only chance I had to—”“To what?” Richard cut in, his voice sharp enough to slice the air. “To rush to his bedside? To play Florence Nightingale to the man who had asked you to be his wife? A man you once loved?” “While you're married to me?”Her breath caught. “It's not like that. You don’t understand—”“No,” he snapped, his chest rising hard, his shoulders filling the narrow space of the room. “What I understand is that you're worried about him in this situation.” "Before you think of us. That while I was tea
